That woman is a class act. She took the news with a good heart. And she was really thankful that no one was hurt. She will get her car fixed and can always say she was involved in an Indy 500 crash. Given the chance to kiss the brickyard is a memory she will always cherish. And I would not be surprised if the Indy group gave her a pair of top choice seats for next years race. Our world needs a lot more people like her; people who are full of life, understanding, have a sense of humor, and enjoy themselves.
I think everyone who seen that crash happen live were fearing the worst. In the end, we got a smashed car, (well in this particular incident, 3 smashed cars). We also got 3 interviews from 3 drivers all of whom accepted that what will be will be, and moved on. Beautiful.

People just watching this report casually probably have no idea how dangerous this could have been. It wasn’t just a tire, it was a wheel, with part of an axle attached, flying at a ridiculous speed through the air. It could have easily killed someone. Thank God it flew totally over the grandstands.
@@lw216316 It amazed me the minimal amount of damage there was to her car, as the weight of the tire/wheel combination, along with the velocity it was traveling, I'd thought it would have crushed a vehicle. But then, the tire is made of rubber, so it did have some bounce to it.
That was bugging me to so I had to go back and listen again. It was just poorly written/executed. 1:05 the incredible Robin Mathews says she was “very emotional” and the reporter breaks in saying “not so emotional that she won’t be back” meaning that this wouldn’t keep her away, but it sure did sound confusing.
I'd want the tire/brake/suspension lump that hit the car but also get the bodyshop to keep the hood, headlight, and fender so it can all be put together with the wheel.

She's getting the royal treatment because the track is class act and she was cool about the whole incident instead of going full blown Karen about it. The question I haven’t heard anyone ask is, why did the wheel become detached? It’s not supposed to do that. The wheels have a cable through the spindle that’s supposed to prevent this. All the humor aside, this could have been a tragedy. Imagine sitting there in the lower stands and getting a face full of Goodyear. I’ve sat in those sections before and a child getting injured or killed would’ve had an extremely profound impact on the sport. I hope that behind the scenes they are looking into how this happened and make changes to prevent it from happening again.
Trust me it will be checked out. The tethers work , but sometimes the force of the impact can cause it to fail. Luck or Divine Intervention( whatever you believe in) definitely was involved in keeping the wheel from injuring someone.
They say the entire assembly broke off, so the tether wasn’t a factor at all. A large part of the car (and wheel) simply broke off and flew off into a public area. Absolutely a catastrophic failure, but not much else could be done to prevent it with the current setups. Tether everything like a knitting project? 😂

Two run along the leading and trailing edges of the upper suspension arm, and one along the leading edge of the lower arm, to the hub assembly. The series completed an analysis of the system last year and increased the fiber count in the flexible portion by 60% and beefed up the mount on the tethers where they attach to the trans. Google "indycar tether stronger racer" and you will find a link to the article on Racer magazine with a nice drawing of the system.
Fortunately this year it was a good ending. 3 fans at the 1998 U.S 500 were not so lucky. Had this crash happened 20 feet further up the track, we might be talking about the end of American motorsports.
There will never be an end to American Motorsports, There have been far worse things to happen in the past in motorsports and yet it continues. The sport is way safer than 20 years ago. Freak accidents simply just happen. Now stuff will be learned from this to prevent it happening again. Modifications will be made to parts so a tire can't fly like this as easily. I heard the tether that holds it to the car broke, so something should and most likely will be changed related to that

There has never been an incident where dozens of spectators were killed live on network television. This happening on an FCC regulated broadcast would be devastating to both voters and sponsors. Denying this is foolish.

A wheel went into the stands before at the indy 500 and killed a fan!
