Honestly its one of the reasons I hate the new trilogy. Theres just not reason to not have the B-wing all over the place. I'm so sick of the B-wing never in movies. Its finally got put into the last one but come on, its pathetic. Disney is just terrible.

The Y-Wing is a multi-purpose fighter-bomber that is designed to be used against capital ships and other fighters. The B-Wing was not designed to fight another fighter, it was designed with a very specific purpose which was to destroy capital ships.

Carried an unfair prejudice against this ship for years. It always seemed so slow and unmaneuverable in the Xwing games. Hearing your break down of it's features makes me wish I could fly it again. Wonder if a flight simulator could be made to incorporate the gyroscopic cockpit.

360° rotation of the ship around the cockpit module, in addition to changing the firing field, would allow the pilot to roll the ship without rolling the cockpit, thus maintaining a frame of reference and creating a true relative "up/down" flight orientation.

Fast yet durable, and capable of taking on everything from a starfighter to star destroyer, the b-wing is an amazing fighter. It is a shame fighters like this were uncommon, especially for the empire, where they could have been extremely effective in crushing the rebellion. Similar to my TIE Defender, which, had it been mass produced, would have destroyed any enemies of the Empire
As the governing power in the galaxy, the Empire needed a cheap, high volume fighter to occupy and garrison all the things. Remember only a small fraction of the Empires forces were ever involved in fighting the Rebels/New Republic, even in the big, set piece fleet battles, whereas the Rebels could concentrate their forces as they wished, and required better gear to make more efficient use of their limited resources. It's the classic quality vs quantity dilemma. Even the TIE Defender is only a partial solution for the Empire, because the Rebels could largely neutralise them by just operating in areas where they weren't present. Defenders were far too expensive to re-equip every ship and base with, and with most of the galaxy to choose from, the Rebels could just keep attacking those places and ships that didn't have them
Again I have say, this my favorite design for starfighter in star wars. The asymmetrical/symmetrical design is a signature of star wars' design for ships and why I love star wars outlandish ship design.
My favorite configuration of this magnificent heavy fighter is the version you get in the B-wing expansion to the original X-wing. 3 lasers, 3 ion cannons, 12 proton torpedoes. The Y-wing may be the old reliable multi-role fighter/bomber. The B-wing is a purpose built heavy attack fighter meant to engage larger capital ships.

The B-wing is less like a fight or a bomber really, and more like a Star Wars version of something like an A-10 Warthog. Especially with that underslung chin gun. Way I see it is: you call in A-wings to intercept fighters, X-wings are the "Jack of All Trades", Y-wings are great against capital ships, and you call in the B-wings if you want to seriously tear shit up!
Its over designed, needlessly complex. How does having your entire ship rotating around your cockpit make any kind of sense? Or having your primary guns so far offset from your point of aim? It just looks ridiculous.

Dale Ford Your assessment is correct, however this is Star Wars, not real life. It is said to be very effective when you can master it. Bruh dude even said in video that it has one of the best targeting systems. It is one of the best bombers in Star Wars history.

It's so skinny from behind that it would be a real pain to actually hit. I still think its over engineered though. But I also really like the k wing and that thing takes 4 people to man so I could just be biased 🤷♂️

I would call Sears catalog every day for a couple of months until they finally got one. Then I yelled at my mom to come from the living room and finish the order with the credit card info. When it arrived I was very worried as the box had gotten smashed. It was ok however.
The Resistance Transport was a converted B-Wing into a troop transport. We see Leia flying in on one in TFA. Also the escape pod Finn and Rose fly out on was a salvaged B-Wing cockpit into a small escape shuttle.

I believe B-Wings based upon star wars rebels are of Mon Calamarian designs . Mon Calamarians are known for having very durable ships that where originally civilian crafts I wouldn't be surprised if the B-Wing had a civilian luxory counterpart which allowed the Mon Calamarians to do ship production under the noses of the Empire while at the same time building a war fleet.
Back in the late 80s, playing the original RPG and running Strikeforce: Shantipole was one of my favorite gaming experiences. (Doing Tatooine Manhunt, which introduced Jodo Cast, was another.) Getting to fly _the_ first B-Wing was something else; it could, and I did, disable the Imperial Nebulon-B set against the PCs at the end single-handedly.
I would gladly use a B -wing in place of an X- Wing if I had to choose. When I first saw that starfighter in Return of the Jedi all those years ago I went "what the heck is that thing"?. Now that I know it better It's Awesome!!
Great video, you could add that B-wing was a base for the extremely lazy ship called Resistance transport, which used it's cockpit and a part of it's weapon's platform on the main wing.
My favorite Star Wars fighter. Bummed they had issues with filming them in RotJ and couldn't use them more in the Battle of Endor scenes. I wish Lucas had gone back and added some scenes with them in with his new edits instead of the nonsense we got stuck with.
i loved this ship as a kid, i thing the unusual looks drew me to it (plus it has alot of cannons), now i prefer the more sleek designs of the A-Wing or the TIE Interceptor.
It's a shame that we don't see much of the B-wing in action in live action.
