As an aircraft mechanic I hear, the A-wing spends as much time in the maintenance bay as the battlefield.. that's actually really damn good for a fight. So of the best modern fighters we have have a ratio of 15 maintenance hours to 1 hour of flying...

The A-Wing is the fastest fighter we have, capable of matching a TIE interceptor in speed. Twin J77 Event-Horrizon engines power the craft, and twin blaster canons provide offensive weaponry. However, what we gain in speed, we lose in defense. The deflector shield capability is significantly less than the X-Wing. So make sure you use your speed to dodge lasers, rather than relying on shields. The A-Wing also carries a limited number Missiles.

It didn't until recently, this is new canon stuff to a large extent. In the old days, the backstory was that Rebel sympathizers who built racing craft put together the design and it quickly spread as a hotrod ship that could be built in such small shops around the galaxy. That was the story back in the eighties, maybe early nineties. By then I was too busy going to college and working three jobs.

Jeffrey Root That is incorrect. The Legends story was that after the Battle of Yavin Jan Dodonna wanted a faster fighter to out run any TIE. The design was derived from the R-22 Spearhead and built by various small shops around the galaxy.
The Disney canon is somewhat different and makes the A-Wing much older and less deadly.

5:08 You sure about that? Anakin had R2D2 docked as a full droid in his jedi starfighter. It joined him in his rescue of chancellor Palpatine, and ejected from the ship once they landed in the hangar of General Grievous' ship.
I did read however, that Obi Wan eventually had his R4 droid hardwired into his fighter as it had become so damaged over time, and all that was left was the functional sensor dome (which wasn't it's original as evidenced by the fact that it is a dome, not a cone) and the ability to plot coordinates for hyperdrive jumps and control ship sub systems.

Seen from the original series, it's successors within it's faction, this is by far, my personal favorite fighter. I'd pick her (gen-1) over an X-wing without looking back. That being said, she ain't perfect. And since every A-wing is a highly personalized fighter I'd make some alterations:
    1. I'd swap the concusion missile launchers and lasers of place. Mounting both lasers in a semi-fixed forward firing position, on top of each other. (like Russian twin 23mm cannons)
    - disadvantage: No more firing backward. (in a craft this nimble/speedy it is not needed, also it takes time to move the barrel 180° twice and then aim the entire ship facing the wrong way, meaning you needed a second crew member for this to be reliable anyway.)
+ advantage: where 1 laser hits, so does the second. In single fire mode, you get real rapid fire forward and from the pilots view, they fire almost from the same point to the same point.
+ advantage: You increase your load of missiles from 6 to ten, for you are still connected to the old magazine AND you replace the old 'turn and shoot' mechanics with a wider magazine.
+ advantage: For a fighter on your tale, drop the missile like a bomb or drop it and guide it after the enemy fighter passes over.
    + advantage: Easier maintenance.
Extra note: Replace the twin cannons with a rotary (small), five barreled rapid fire, high precision laser. Heats up slower, rate of fire up with alas more complex maintenance and higher price tag.
    2. build in the components of an astromechdroid for faster FTL jumps. Not the entire droid.
    - disadvantage: Cost goes up!
+ advantage: more precise & faster FTL jumps.
+ advantage: The maintenance crew gets onboard help.
+ advantage: If the pilot is unconscious, disabled, the droid can bring them home on not just preset coordinates, but make up its own mind.
    3. Vectored thrusters.
    - disadvantage: Cost!
+ advantage: This is a highly elite fighter, with only 2 roles in mind that overlap well.
    1. space superiority fighter.
    2. ultra-high speed interceptor.
Giving it vectored thrusters makes it maneuver even better.
+ advantage: Flying with 1 engine taken out becomes less of a burden and does not take this one out of the fight.
There, my humble insight on this most beautiful and s3xy fighter of its era in the Star Wars saga.

in legends Luke travels learning from as many force users as he could. One group taught him force fold which allowed him to teleport vast distances. if my memory serves the group that had that used it to teleport entire ships using the force. they didn't even have hyperdrives.

Dunno if this is a topic youve already covered but im curious as to what you consider the most tragic scene in starwars to be. Granted, the final battle between anakin and obi wan probably tops a lot of peoples lists, I'd probably say its the moment before Anakin has the vader helmet sealed to his face where he mutters something along the lines of "padme, help me." As its essentially his very final moments of being Anakin, before losing his old identity entirely.

How does the rebel A-wing (RotJ version) open its canopy? I cant find any reference of how that model opens up. The newer versions flip open to the back but the RotJ version doesnt have room for that or any mechanics that hint how it opens up.

Heh, 1 year too late, but here's my reply 😆 The A Wing had two canopy mechanics, depending on the model. One opened on a hinge and slid slightly back. On the other, the canopy slid forward on a rail to open up.

    • @aaronorr5586

The Rebels and Resistance sliced the IFF codes and that made tracking the ships to a specific distributor a nightmare. The Imps could not stop any shipbuilding corporation from selling the fighters on the open market because the Empire was not in the business of escorting freighters.
