  • What can the ancient philosopher Plato teach us about building a network and thriving in today's intellectual economy? I talk with Alex Petkas, a Princeton PhD in classics, who shares insights on Plato's rise and his brand-building strategies within the decentralized world of Athens in the late fifth and fourth centuries BC, where widespread literacy and the new media technology of writing created an intellectual landscape strikingly similar to the one we inhabit today.

    Most insightful.
More emphasis on Plato establishing the first university. This was revolutionary, along with his ideas. New universities and schools is the way forward.

This was absolutely fascinating. I was ignorant of Plato's personal biography, and Alex was utterly fascinating and enjoyable to listen to and learn from. Truly excellent work.

I think this Alex dude is the first one of your guests I have intellectual respect for, other than that biologist chick from long ago.

    Very good.
Now, the goal of the writings and talks is the network.
But what are the goals of the network itself?
What does it want to do? What should it want to do?
Is that a secret, or is that underdeveloped?
(I know, either way it will be left unanswered.)

Fascinating discussion. While a Platonist, I'm less certain about the Academy (and the veracity of Plato's biography generally.) The history of the Academy was written by Seneca (much, much later). I find it strange. I studied the Timaeus, a key text. And yet we are to believe that within a short time after Plato's death even his closest pupils could not agree on whether Creation in the Timaeus was to be understood literally or symbolically. How can that be? Did no one ask him during his lifetime? The connection between the man and the school is not nearly as clear as it might seem.

Once you are read in, it’s rare to find a person who can be in correspondence. If you are generous of spirit with someone less complex, often you get bitten.

incredible incredible power with mystery. my robert greene seduction style is "coquette" so i'm a natural but I do feel tension with christianity which generally rejects gnostic ideas that ultimately result in elitism that is an affront to the very nature and actions of christ.

I completely agree that I’m averse to esotericism and secrets and such, I subscribe strongly to the idea that everything is to be revealed, and the truth is what sets one free. The point about mystery, in my opinion, is just about style really. There are no hidden secrets but things have to be worked for a little bit…

My greatest concern is how to recover from all these economic and global troubles and stay afloat especially with the political power tussle going on in US.

@William Bowling It is better to invest now. You will never be younger than you are today and there will never be a perfect time to invest. Due to compounding, which Einstein called the 8th wonder of the world, you can get rich slowly from investing if you do it from a young enough age.
