"Io Capitano": Oscar-Nominated Film Dramatizes Perilous Migrant Journey from West Africa to Europe

The new Oscar-nominated film Io Capitano follows young Senegalese migrants on their journey from West Africa to Europe. "We wanted to … give visual form to a part of the journey that we don't see," says director Matteo Garrone. We are also joined by Mamadou Kouassi, whose journey from the Ivory Coast to Italy inspired the movie. Nearly 200,000 migrants traveled to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea last year. Thousands have died or gone missing during the perilous journey. "We wanted to try to humanize this number," says Garrone. For migrants like Kouassi, who face increasingly xenophobic and racist anti-immigrant policies and sentiment in Europe, the film provides an "opportunity also to express ourselves" and to share "what African people are suffering before they arrive in Europe." Kouassi served as a script consultant for the film.

I just watched this movie because of this video. It was absolutely stunning, for sure. Ultimately, it was impressively horrific the extent of the impossible situations along this journey. The moments of truely extraordinary humanity and loving kindness would have stood out in the best of times, but their presence under the most horrific conditions human and nature can inflict upon people made them feel like more than an oasis in the desert, a friend in a prison, community and reconnection in faraway lands. It felt like, perhaps, the love was more inherent in the people than even the fear or pain was. Great movie.

This movie does a great job at exposing the horrible truth about the struggle of African migrants. It shows the inhumane treatment of African migrants by those who claim to be human. The migrants have shown their humanity by their solidarity for one another. Two million European illegal immigrants get to show up in South Africa while Europe is refusing African migrants entry to their country. Somebody please make that make sense.🤔🤬🤬🤬😤😤😤😡😡😡🤨

Italy recently tried to negotiate with Tunisia to " deal " with the migrant crisis....the regular action would be paying African leaders to force harsh treatment on migrants inborder before it becomes Italian problem.
However, its already an Italian or European problem when those countries are keeping the Africa countries poor and sick by stealing resources and wonder why Africans have ro leave thier lands..... European countries should leave Aftica for African with all the resources and stoo planting thier luxury products and prohibit African people from planting thier important food.

I saw the movie yesterday. I would have loved to have heard the stories of several of the other migrants caught up in this experience. We were able to understand the two teenagers rationale for making this trip. However, we were left in the dark regarding the others' calculations a rationales.

Would love to see Io Capitano and I hope it wins the Oscar and other awards which it truly deserves. Wish more films would take the audience on the journey of migrants and let the viewer walk in the migrants' shoes visually to put the human stories and issue in a deep perspective. Io Capitano reminds me of Ai Weiwei's film The Human Flow and the Spanish film Adu.
