I'm a PS5 and XBox Series S owner who has watched loads of videos comparing the current handhelds. I made my decision and ordered the Steam Deck Oled 512GB, yesterday. I bought Eldin Ring and Skyrim along with the deck. I'm also going to use it to remote-play my PS5, using Chiaki. I really wanted to buy the ROG Ally because of Game Pass support, but I believe it's a bit early. The Ally 2 or at least a mid-gen refresh seems like the better choice. I'm really excited to get my hands on the Oled. It's my first SD. I was at first interested in the SD because of the decreased price of the OG 256GB model, but the improvements of the Oled model convinced me to pay the extra $150 and get the newer model.
I have also watched alot of videos about these two handhelds and i am leaning more towards the ROG Ally but want to wait a bit longer(for a version with a improved battery).CES is next week so we will see if anything is announced.
@@robertsmith-wv2hw I decided to go with steam deck OLED after the same compare and contrast and the major reasons are 1. Battery. 2. Steam deck doesn't fry SD cards. 3. I play mostly steam games. Anything else, as stated in this video, I have a gaming laptop and gaming PC to play them on. I also believe the OLED will look better than getting an extra 30hz and 1080p (PLUS BETTER BATTERY BECAUSE OF IT). It's not necessary for me in a handheld device if I get more battery overall and sacrifice a bit of graphics. I know the steam deck will become more expansive in the future and it'll only get better. I do believe my next handheld will be the ROG 2 (or later) once they work out some of their issues. But that's maybe a year + off. For now, I'm very happy with my purchase based off what I know from reviews and comparing specs. Now I just have to wait until it shows up.
I don't really think we have a global winner on theses handled machines. The SD have a great power efficiency, a great software support, a nice oled screen. The Ally have a great VRR screen with LFC, much more power and Windows compatibility. We can add the Legion Go or GPD Win4 and Ayaneo but all of them have their lacks... (power, price, support, disponibilities, software design...). For me, we are at the begining of theses kind of hardware. It will be something to look at for next years. On my side, i've an Ally. Some friends have SD. No one is jealous of the other 🙂. We are just curious with each other hardware.
Trust me I have both ally and oled 512 I love both but the performance and quality of games is high in ally steam deck is also fine while playing but when. You have both side by side rog ally wins tbh
I bought an ally 3 weeks ago. More than happy with emulating mostly WiiU. I think it's an incredible device. Their is updates n stuff to do with windows 11 but not been an issue with me.
To each their own! It's awesome that you're enjoying it. I got a LCD Steam Deck last year and have used it almost every day. That made it pretty easy to justify upgrading to the OLED. I'm pretty excited about the upgrade.
I got the Steamdeck Oled and am super satisfied. What good is the ROG Ally if I have to go to 720p for better performance? And I also have my PC, my Playstation and my XBox for the demanding games. So Valve, everything done well.
This was my thinking... surely for big triple A gaming you're going to want to do it on a big screen using an Xbox or Playstation. I ordered a SD OLED for emulation, stuff that I simply can't play on a PS5, and for less demanding indie games. It's all about realistic expectations.
I play 1080p too it’s so cool :) z1 extreme on Rog ally is so good and the steam deck is not immersive like ally I love ally speaker for example it’s so cool
ROG Ally: better performance at more than double in most games, 120hz screen with VRR. The fans are WAY quieter. The Steam Deck sounds like a helicopter taking off. The battery life can be better on the Ally with proper optimization.
The OLED has very little performance gain compared to the LCD. 5fps the most? Sure a better screen but what the point if the game runs like crap? @fallart4580
Steam Deck is visually maxed out. Ally and Legion Go are still getting updates making games look and play better especially being able to use an egpu. Oled screen hype will die down soon making us remember how under powered it is.
I agree, but for people who play just to play on the go, the SD OLED is better for the pocket games. The more demanding games you can play on the desktop
ROG Ally and Legion Go can potentially benefit more from FSR3 and frame generation. For AAA gaming the newer gen AMD handhelds are better, but I guess the steam deck is awesome for indie, emulators and so on. Better windows support is also beneficial for users of Xbox Gamepass. In the end people should just get the device they like.
Uhm yes, I'm fully aware of that. I'm speaking of FSR 3 with frame generation. RDNA2 chips don't support that properly, while RDNA3 (like in Ally and Go) do. But I'm not how important it will be, but it's already clear that Z1 extreme is capable of better graphics. But we are spoiled to have many choices now. @@derekfurst6233
The best reason to choose the Steam Deck OLED over the Ally is battery life. The original Steam Deck had the best power efficiency at lower wattages and only got outdone by the oled. That plus the 25% bigger battery really make the SteamDeck OLED run circles around the Ally in terms of battery life and efficiency. The Steam Deck also never cooked its micro sd cards.
But even in all that, the Ally with very little tweaking you get almost twice the performance and some more on the Ally. Same goes for the battery life on those tweaks. Truthfully it's preference only in price and contrast but performance and the fact that it's running W11 and performing better and with better ease of use with more applications supporting W11 including other launchers, means it's more attractive to most folks that want performance AND flexibility and capability of using it as a full on PC that supports all Windows apps. Lots of games are unplayable on the deck as well. Not great imho cause that's automatic limitations to my library alltogether.
@@pushpopLoC909 w10/11 is a big downside for many ppl like me, windows works very bad with such a small screen and controllers + poor Ally's joysticks quality with the dead zones
Steam Deck OLED is pricey for what is mostly a retro handheld. Its AAA game compatibility came to an end this Fall. At least the LCD Steam Deck had price on its side.
The Ally literally ships with an SD reader that fries cards and dies. Say that out loud, "My 700 dollar purchase ships broken, new in the box"..the "just pretend the SD reader doesn't exist and install a bigger SSD copium is real. Not to mention the battery life that makes it virtually useless if away from an outlet for more than 1.5 hours. It's literal trash that ASUS will abandon.
The rog ally is absolutely ruined by its poor battery. The steam deck runs games at 10 to 15 Watts far better than the ally and when your running the ally over 15 Watts the battery is horrendous. If I have to have my device plugged in then I would rather have a mid range gaming laptop which will make the windows experience more comfortable aswell.
Am considering buying one of either of these. Just one question for now - Why choose Steam Deck OLED over Asus, if I can download Steam on Win 11 and play all my library; not only those steam games fully supported? Honestly, I think I like the Steam Deck a bit more, but that limitation isn’t just a minor one. Thanks. Just wondered what your take on it is. (Will watch the video now. If I hear an answer, I’ll just delete the comment. Just wanted to get it outta the way.)
What games dont run on the ally? Amd is known for good drivers and wouldnt you say that both devices require graphics setting tinkering to achieve what you want? Every game in my library has run no questions asked on my ally, with the only issue being mouse centric games (joystick is alright for these, SD obviously better). Please let us know what games were a struggle to get going please. No listed games = untested.
Games would often launch but run into almost immediate controller issues. Halo Infinite had a persistent controller glitch that forced shooting. only happened with the integrated controller but didn't when using a Bluetooth controller. Several other games had random bugs that made them unplayable
@@ProfessorTek it'd be great if you could list them because I have halo infinite and am definitely going to test it out It looks like this may be have been an issue during the Ally's release but most likely fixed with updates. When did you last play Halo on the Ally?
@@ProfessorTek you clearly have out of date information. This might have been the case 6 months ago. I've been gaming and haven't had issues with launching games. Plus, you're behaving like the Steam Deck can play everything....which it's most definitely can't

A month in with the OLED SD and I'm still in the honeymoon phase. This OLED is the best screen I've laid my eyes on smaller than 65". The only thing I really want is the option to set the Installed Games as my Home screen. I upgraded to a 2TB and have 60 games installed, so I want to see all those thumbnails when I go to Home.
Of course I have, but I don't play games on my tiny phone screen. I also have a 12.9" Ipad Pro, but I only use it for art and books. So in terms of gaming, I have my 27" monitor and 75" QLED TV to compare this to and the OLED just POPS. @@itsquiwi8780
@itsquiwi8780 Maybe in terms of resolution, but nothing else. And resolution is one of the things I care least about. Especially on a handheld gaming device. None of the handhelds have enough power to make a higher resolution display worth it.
Do not try and divide the handheld market with your comparisons. We are not like the console market fighting over game exclusives. At the end of the day, we are PC gamers!
Every tiny detail of the Steam Deck, particularly the OLED, feels like a careful and deliberate decision was made. Its not the most powerful, but it has the best performance/efficiency ratio. It's screen isnt the highest resolution, but 800p looks great at 7.4 inches and performance in games is just about right at that res. Its a very well thought out and balanced device.
800p looks great? Dude when I installed the Monster hunter to my ally the resolution was in 720p and I thought it looks shit so I checked the display resolution it was 720p I changed it to 1080p you can definitely tell the difference between 1080p to 720p the difference is night and day.
VRR is more important in gaming that OLED. As someone who's had both devices, screen tearing is back on thr Steam Deck. The screen on the Ally with 120hz is a game changer. Proper optimization and you get more than double the performance and still good better life. I get atleast 2hrs out Ally on AAA games than the Steam Deck can even play.
@@nathanjuan6042 800p does look great... On a small 800p screen. 720p looks horrible on a 1080p screen though, because the pixels cannot be scaled up proportionally to match the display resolution. Because it is not a proportional scale, you end up with a very blurry output. This applies to all screens, big or small. This is probably why the Lenovo legion go is equipped with a 1600p screen. Obviously it can't run modern AAA games well at that resolution, but it can play most if not all games well at 800p and keep the scaling square. 540p would be the next lowest resolution that you'd get square scaling on the ally, but at that point, the output would likely end up too low to benefit from square scaling. If you have a 1440p monitor, you can test the effects of scaling by comparing games at 1080p vs 720p. In most cases, even though 720p is lower resolution, it will likely still look sharper, because horizontal and vertical pixel count is exactly half of the display.
@@The8bitbeard Dude I said in my comment I installed in in my Ally which is also 7 inch as well and monster hunter was preset in 720p so I noticed and changed it in 1080p which is very noticable and the difference is night and day.
While many games work halfway, I usually don't consider that working. A lot of games when sleep mode is used crash upon reboot or have mismanaged controller input issues that I've not experienced on desktop :/
@@ProfessorTek Are you playing games or putting games to sleep midway. I have only ever put one game to sleep and it worked after. I usually play a game, save, quit and shutdown my system.
IMO if the SD can run game X than the Ally will also run that game but better. Especially with newer games like the last of us remake. Was not an enjoyable experience on the SD even though it is SD certified. These were my issues with the SD and why I got the ally as a better replacement. The only thing I can say is way better is the battery life of the SD and ease of use. I am a pc user at the roots and the Ally offers a "familiar" experience to me, subjective sure it is. I guess it depends on the end user itself. I for one am glad the SD exist as it made companies also have a shot at it. Can't go wrong with either and I don't think there is a true A is better then B with these 2. trade offs on both ends.
At what wattage. These are handhelds. Who cares if a handheld can crank up the wattage to a bagillion and game for 30 seconds before dying. Watt for watt the steam deck matches the ally, and sub 15 watts it beats the ally
Based on my own opinion, i prefer steam deck OLED, i used to had the previous version and i was happy, it played almost everything, so why not to play everything on OLED version?
I REALLY wanted to buy the ally due to higher performance, but i ended up going with the oled. The rog ally is a decent first take but its just not there yet. Ill wait for mid gen upgrade or the next big thing. Harware is just utter crap. I must have read hundreds and hundreds of comments reporting different issues from the ally. Ive even read MANY comments like " this is my third one" "this is my fourth one" 😂😂 Of course theres some that say they havent experienced any issues. Good for them!, but it seems its a 70/ 30 split. You could miss me with all that mess. I chose quality.
The SD card has been issues have been fixed with newer models. You seems to forget how BAD the Steam Deck was at launch. Plus you're acting like the Steam Deck never breaks. People RMA their Steam deck all the time too.
"Regional availability" lol. Releasing in all of north America, all of the EU, the UK, China, Korea, and Japan is "regional". Valve sells their products in all major gaming markets. Rog ally crap : no OLED, no trackpads, cheap buttons/terrible ergonomics, Armoury Crate bloatware Steam Deck feels like an actual handled console. ROG Ally a lot more powerful on paper but in reality it feels similar and both will be obsolete though Steam Deck or a real laptop but never the ROG Ally plus it will probably be abandoned by Asus on the long run
I had the Rog Ally and got the Steam Deck Oled, I sold the Ally and kept my Deck. It was overall a better device to use, only good thing about Ally was the higher wattage and maybe VRR, didnt really matter for me VRR and 15w on both, matched performance. I think Ally is great for people who dont have a "gaming PC" at home so they can play at better fps, but I have a gaming PC, so I can just use Moonlight to stream my game which is basically native nearly with low latency and at ultra with 90fps+ which looks great on the Deck Oled, not only that, streaming game on Oled the battery last forever as its barely using anything.
@RUclips2021FM Stop with the false information. Literally Gamernexus has compared them both and a recent RUclipsr this week which gave them both same performance at 15w on video not a random RUclips comment. This is also natural due to the power envelope the Z1 Extreme needs and 15w is not enough. I've had both device so stop with the false information.
@familyguyfan4418 Does not matter when they perform the same at 15w and Deck performs better at low wattages too. I stream game from my Gaming PC at home to my Deck, full ultra and 90fps. No need for an Ally at 30w, this is my reason, does not make sense for me and Ally bad battery life is a turn off, don't want to having to be using a powe bank every time when I'm out.
@familyguyfan4418 and an RTX 4050 is newer than an RTX 3090. Newer isn't always better at everything. The z1 extreme has worse performance than the valve chip at under 15 watts. At 10 watts the steam deck wipes the floor with the ally
Got both, and I agree. The oled deck is the best. It’s just the most balanced. Asus ally is great but it’s not perfect. The deck oled is pretty much perfect at what it does.

Best Buy offers full retail support for the Ally. I don't have to wait for it to show up in the mail and prey it didn't get crushed in transit. There is no Valve store I can just buy one and pick it up in 10 minutes. If there was, I probably would have the Steam Deck instead, who knows.
ROG Ally is better, I can use any game launcher I want native. It’s lighter and feels better in the hand. More power for AAA games like Starfield. I play games like Destiny and COD when traveling.

The Legion Go makes for a great desktop device and works better than the others for media consumption beyond games. Give it 6 months and he Go's software will catch up to the Ally and Steam Deck.
That's expensive and a ton of work, plus it would require a specific division for updating and making sure that their own operating system works. Not all that easy for most companies, especially since most of the handheld makers are hardware companies first.
Ultimately, they are both incredible devices, but one will let you play almost any game and perform better doing so while the other will play lesser games and will play them worse. The software that makes deck great is easily available to Ally with a simple download. That is not the case for valves device. The software that allows you to play AAA games on Ally cannot be simply downloaded on valves os. Until valve figures out how to integrate anti cheat software it will be relegated to play lower end games… but for lower end games, switch is king. Deck sits in an awkward middle ground and that’s a shame because I believe their hardware is best in class
It's not an issue on the Switch OLED as well as the majority of smartphones, which are OLED too. You aren't getting burn in unless you are on the desktop for hours a day with the same UI in the same spot. Gaming and other media content is highly unlikely to burn in, especially since most people aren't playing the same game for days and never changing anything's position
Nonsense. It looks absolutely great on a screen that small. Some switch games look a little rough, but that's due to poor anti-aliasing, pop-in, etc, not because of screen resolution. I know that my eyes would rather look at the 800p OLED on the Steam Deck over any 4k LCD TV.
Keep coping. Steam deck can’t even play games at 60fps lmao every game I’ve seen mfs is saying they gotta play it 40-45 for it to play smoothly. Deck is ass
No its not lol. In technology power is power. You can sing all day long about battery life but its a moot point if you cant run most AAA titles. But steamdeck OLED aint it.
but performance is only 1 parameter of any device and when you are making a choice you have to compare all parameters. Steam Deck has better build quality, better software, better battery and user experience. Ally wins only in raw performance (near the power outlet ofc) and when you NEED windows (like games with anti-cheat and/or gamepass)
@@fallart4580 Well battery life isnt a big issue for me as i dont play more than two hours at a stretch and there are power banks available. I don't own either (former Steam Deck owner) but are familiar with the three big handhelds right now and the Steam Deck is an incredibly gimped machine.
Exactly my sentiments in my previous video
ROG can set 2, 4, 6, 8 cores to run your game! If you need battery consumption less, then you can set the same core of Steam Deck OLED!
Wiiu not working easy
I got the Steamdeck Oled and am super satisfied. What good is the ROG Ally if I have to go to 720p for better performance? And I also have my PC, my Playstation and my XBox for the demanding games. So Valve, everything done well.
This was my thinking... surely for big triple A gaming you're going to want to do it on a big screen using an Xbox or Playstation. I ordered a SD OLED for emulation, stuff that I simply can't play on a PS5, and for less demanding indie games.
It's all about realistic expectations.
Lmao I play almost every game on 1080 and looks great you guys are tech nazis js
I play 1080p too it’s so cool :) z1 extreme on Rog ally is so good and the steam deck is not immersive like ally I love ally speaker for example it’s so cool
And le screen of ally is beautiful it’s not oled but it’s perfectly correct
Love your review! I´m definitely buying the Steam Deck Oled
This review isn't accurate and you're being misled.
@@BajanHawk why
ROG Ally: better performance at more than double in most games, 120hz screen with VRR. The fans are WAY quieter. The Steam Deck sounds like a helicopter taking off. The battery life can be better on the Ally with proper optimization.
@@BajanHawk seems like you are comparing with the LCD version.
@@rowaystarcoyou know that the steam deck can use fsr too... Actually the steam deck lets you use fsr on every game whenever or not it supports it
Uhm yes, I'm fully aware of that.
I like the Steam Deck because the button layout is like a playstation controller while rog ally resembles a xbox controller which i hate.
Windows 11 is easy to run on SD
my LLG is a monster, clumsy, big, heavy. But mySD Oled beats it nonetheless, I always prefer to use that one: It's SteamOS that makes a difference.
My asus rog took a shit bc it stopped charging
Am considering buying one of either of these. Just one question for now -
Why choose Steam Deck OLED over Asus, if I can download Steam on Win 11 and play all my library; not only those steam games fully supported?

Do not try and divide the handheld market with your comparisons. We are not like the console market fighting over game exclusives. At the end of the day, we are PC gamers!
Watch my previous video 😄
@@nathanjuan6042 800p on a 7" display is a higher pixel density than your 4k monitor on your desktop. Yes, it's just fine.

I think I like companies that make their own hardware and software like Apple.
Sure, but how is PC game compatibility on your Mac? Linux passed MacOS on the Steam hardware survey this year.
That's expensive and a ton of work, plus it would require a specific division for updating and making sure that their own operating system works. Not all that easy for most companies, especially since most of the handheld makers are hardware companies first.
3 teraflop better that 1.5......🤔
Ultimately, they are both incredible devices, but one will let you play almost any game and perform better doing so while the other will play lesser games and will play them worse. Nonsense. It looks absolutely great on a screen that small. Some switch games look a little rough, but that's due to poor anti-aliasing, pop-in, etc, not because of screen resolution.
I know that my eyes would rather look at the 800p OLED on the Steam Deck over any 4k LCD TV.
Plz ppl only say steam deck is better bc of the price. Rog ally still craps on the steam deck.
Keep coping. Steam deck can’t even play games at 60fps lmao every game I’ve seen mfs is saying they gotta play it 40-45 for it to play smoothly. Deck is ass
SteamOS is crap. Can NOT play all the games. Stop with the console experience worship!
Hell no its better mate :P
No its not lol. In technology power is power.
You can sing all day long about battery life but its a moot point if you cant run most AAA titles.
There are ways to boost ally’s battery life but theres not many to boost deck’s power.
Im sure theyr working on Steamdeck 2, which if stronger than Ally, will be the optimal handheld.

Well battery life isnt a big issue for me as i dont play more than two hours at a stretch and there are power banks available.
I think ergonomics are sometimes very subjective as i prefer ally’s smaller frame.
Now to add the boost in performance, which is significant actually, the ability to play from any storefront including gamepass, it becomes an obvious win over steamdeck.
All im saying is everyone is advertising deck as the better console on parameters that might not matter much to everyone, instead of looking at good old performance.
@@gregorymasters5805 Battery life is a huge plus for a Portable device. If I'm stuck on an outlet when gaming then I'd rather just build a PC than waste money on a portable device.
Sure if you like less performance and not having the ability to download games from Xbox/Epic/Battlenet. The steam deck is so underpowered.
This is why i would never subscribe to a channel that claims to be a tech company but gives almost 98% of misinformation, specially here about ally vs steam deck oled. The deck doesnt even come close to be being a king of handhelds specially if you dont put the pros and cons of each device which is basically what you are putting here, that the Ally has so many cons but the steam deck does not.
Please watch my previous video, that's why I joke in the beginning about making a reverse bias video that leans towards the ROG Ally (which I'm making soon) 'tis but a jokey joke
lol no. ALLY >>> SD.
Can't even play AC6 or Tekken 8 smoothly.
Lmao this title is trash
NAH. ROG ALLY IS THE BEST.
Yeah, no it's not. good video though.
I don't own either (former Steam Deck owner) but are familiar with the three big handhelds right now and the Steam Deck is an incredibly gimped machine. The hardware is years behind so if you want to play any games that are even moderately demanding more than the absolute lowest settings with more than 20 FPS then the deck isn't for you. If you want to run popular online competitive or casual games you're out of luck. It's fine for Stardew Valley and similar games and the screen is great but that doesn't make up for a system that inherently fails at it's main purpose which is gaming.
Tell me you've never tried the Steam Deck without saying it outright.
@@The8bitbeard I had a steam deck for and sold it.
Dont Sound Like that Elden Ring cyberpunk lies of p diablo 4 and much More Games run so awesome and more that 35fps on the Steamdeck that just Not true what u are telling.
ROG ally Is better I wonder have he ever check the graphic card that comes with it it comes with the 4090 graphic card
😂😂😂😂😂 that is a joke ? Rog ally still the King
It’s literally not I have both 😂
ROG All Day!
I’ve click bait but all you have is a ok screen that makes colors pop, you’re acting like the steam deck doesn’t have the secret sauce. And it does but in terms of performance, it still lacks compared to other hand helds. FURTHER MORE, I can upgrade the screen on my rog ally to an oled, and that’s what I’m working on and once I do it’ll be a changer and yall steam deck will see that vaulve can’t just be lazy. NO ON WANTS TO USE THE STEAM OVERLAY, yeah it’s cool but I wanna play other games not just a STEAM PORTAL. so I can make the steam deck a windows device, yeah that’s cool… oh but then I lose everything that made the steam deck the steam deck. SO tell me more on why your expensive steam deck 2 is better than my laptop that got converted into a tablet/ handheld. Go on neck beard
