Years ago I saw a video on mini hatchets and the guy made splitting wedges with the mini hatchet which he used with battons he'd also made. The Old Jimbo video really was an eye opener about the capabilities of mini hatchets and using simple techniques to achieve what might initially have seemed to be impossible. Knowledge and skill enabled that mini hatchet to do truly remarkable feats. I've never been so well informed as I was watching that video, it was what helped me to decide on my first hatchet.
Thanks Mike for this side by side comparison of these two beautiful tools. I didn't realize that the Outdoor axe was predominantly a splitting tool. Quite a huge difference when comparing their top view profiles. This definitely will help me to make a more informed decision at purchase time. Thanks again, and ATVB.
I’m glad that my video helped you. I know it doesn’t look like it in the video but it is a big difference in how much force you need to use to split wood.
Same for me and Backyard Bram. I wanted one of the two but could not decide. Saw this review and ordered the Outdoor Axe and am waiting to get it. A bit lighter also, so that makes it better for me with a backpack. Ty for the good review.
Thanks for the review. I got the outdoor axe last year and just today I got the wildlife. I intend on keeping the wildlife by my stove for splitting kindling. The outdoor serves multiple purposes. Most of my splitting work is with big trees so I use the large splitter and the splitting maul. I love them all!
Thanks for this vid - I bought a WL hatchet and the next day returned it to get the OD axe on the basis of this vid. I needed a smaller log/kindling splitter and it works perfectly for the job
Thanks so much for this video, I came here for a review of the wildlife hatchet and come away with the outdoor axe as my choice given the the primary purpose I want the axe for is splitting wood and being a very weak person I require as efficient tool as possible. 🐸
Say Heah Mike, I have a G. B. Small Forest Axe and I luv it. But I got lucky to buy my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet that I bought it as a closeout, I got mine spot on, And because it's compact, It became my Fav. Bush Craft Hatchet, Thanx You.
I have a silky and don’t need to chop and if I use my Bravo 1 so I just search a splitting tool for larger logs and the outdoor axe seems to fit my needs the best.
Good comparison, but think about how you'll use it before buying... Some might say, "I'll backpack a saw too, then split what I cut with the Outdoorsman". Ok, but how thick are you willing to make repeated cuts.. then have to also split? I usually scrounge up dead/dry stuff in the 3" range, split only enough to get the fire going, then feed whole pieces I cut with a Silky or Boreal21, plus finer cutting and shaping misc stuff around camp. I split very very little and greatly prefer the Wildlife over the Outdoorsman (I have both) . The Outdoorsman is great for car camping, splitting wood cut with a chainsaw and brought along, or just keeping around the house for the firepit... but I dont care for it much at all in the wild. Honestly, the Small Forset Axe is better than these two put together...
Thank you for the video Mike:) So for the typical person going backpacking in the forrest, wouldnt the the outdoor ax make more sense, for exactly splitting wood better, to create firewood and such? Because as long as the outdoor ax carves wood well enough to help makes stakes and the likes, one has a knife for the finer carving stuff after all, but nothing else to help split than the axe.

I recently got this hatchet. It does not have a metal ring in the top of the hatchet. The wedge is in the handle top, inside the hatchet head opening, but not the metal piece. Did they stop doing this?
Hi, Not that I know of. They still have the same outdoor axe as mine on there website. You should check if you got the right one. It should be exactly as mine in the video.
sweet. is what i looked for. could you compare the outdoor axe and the fiskars x7 side by side? how is your long term feeling about the outdoor axe, especially about the handle stability, the edge-holding of the steel, etc?
I wish the outdoor axe had little thicker handle but that is about it. The steel is awesome, hold its sharpness really well and do not roll very easily. I haven't used the fiskars but I will keep that in mind.
Just an observation: EVERY axe can be sharp and EVERY axe can be blunt. For example, if you have the sharpest axe in the world but strike stones or metal with the edge, it will become dull. Also, during normal use it will become dull after a while. Meanwhile, if you take the dullest axe on earth and sharpen it very well, the axe will become very sharp.

Well, yes bit that is not the whole truth. Depending on the steel alloy and the hardening there is quite a big difference in edge retention.

I would probably go with the outdoor axe. It is a better splitter and that’s what I usually use an axe for.
If just 1 go with small forest axe over these 2. But I own the wildlife hatchet and love it also
