And if anyone has forgotten: Speed Editor comes with Davinci Resolve Studio licence. It's still good value for money (Speed Editor + Studio licence), of course only if you need it
Yeah potentially another really cool reason to get it
And another reason you can pick up loads of these machines second hand at low prices (without a licence) lol 👍
@@PB72UK Loads ? I only need one...
good video, thanks mate. I will buy one!
Of course! 🤘
And yeah they are pretty slick. And the fact that it comes with a studio license makes it a pretty easy buy
Make it to work on the edit page and I just might be interested
The wheel does 🤘
You could try the DR Editor’s Keyboard, which reputedly was designed for the Edit pane.
Hey Jake I have Davinci Resolve and have struggled to make complex edits on my Windows 10 Pro because it's so slow but I'm looking to buy a macbook that runs the program much faster and allows me to make edits such as the ones in this video. I was looking at the macbook pro but I don't know which chip is right and how much memory is enough. Any recommendations?
Hey happy to help! With the right settings you can get away with just about anything Apple Silicon these days. It is truly crazy. Personally I would try to go for higher than 16 GB of Ram if you can. 24 or 32. and other than that, whatever chip you can afford that can have that RAM should be plenty in my experience. And if you do have some slowdowns, check out my settings video for potato computers with resolve. I used to edit everything on a Mac Mini (even professionally)
@@jakefelzien Thank you so much!
I managed to work quite happily with DR on a 2013 Intel desktop Mac. There are some options for making editing smoother - e.g. using the cache and rendering to a lower resolution. Try searching for some tips on RUclips. Now I have a MacBook Pro, so I don’t even need to think about performance!
Totally agree- you can do 90% of the editing with the Speed Editor on the Cut Page - and then head off to the rest of the pages for fine tuning... I never appreciated the Cut Page fully until I started using the Speed Editor
Right? It blows my mind how much I have been missing out on
Glad people are seeing the benefits of the cut page. I'm NEW to editing. In my 60's and have never edited a video before DR18. (not one) Researched all the options for professional programs and went with DR. Starting with a blank slate, I wanted to learn the most efficient way to edit without memorizing 50 shortcut key combinations because I don't come from the keyboard video game era. (The Windows PC was just released when I was your age.) My overall evaluation of editing options brought me to DR with the SPEED Editor and CUT page. (It's a no brainer as you said) But few do detailed video tutorials about the CUT page with SPEED Editor so here we are a year later and I'm still trying to figure all of this out. I've asked those creating YT courses for step by step tutorials about each page starting with the Media page covering every detail an editor would need to know, nobody has created them for DR18.5 It's always a fast paced overview of DR18 can do. Because the layout and settings changed from DR17 forward. The older video tutorials take more time to decipher as you look through the thousands of settings trying to figure out the instructions, wasting valuable time going in circles. PS: For those creating these DR tutorials. I would be happy to pay $250 for a full detailed tutorial of the DR18.5 using SPEED Editor, Media, Cut, Edit pages and another $500 for Fusion, Color, Fairlight, Deliver. Just point me to the creator of these tutorials. Thanks
Very good to know! And very much noted 😊
I am like you (although I have used other editors in the past and exclusively use DR). I have the speed editor too.
Like you, I would pay someone who could answer my questions as needed. Kind of like a person who is on "retainer" for quick questions.
Anyway, I also think that the tutorials out there, while helpful, are more about "Hey y'all, watch how good I can edit" rather than explaining why they click on this or that. I have been helped by YT videos, but have to watch their cursor at a slow pace, sometimes replaying again and again until I see "Oh, THAT'S why he clicked there!"
Would be great if the YT geniuses were more about the teaching and less about themselves.
@@moodberry 100% agreed
I am in the same boat as you, and you also expressed your point of view.
Dude, you'll become huge ! I just LOVE your style, so incredibly pleasant to watch
Haha thanks so much 🤓🤓
This feels like it was edited by an editor who wanted everybody to know he's really good at editing.
Ouch 😅
Great content as always.
Moving my whole team from Final Cut to Davinci and videos like this make the transition suck way less.
Would love a video breaking down your workflow with the speed editor. planning on picking one up!
Sweet will definitely try to make a more clear one on that 🤙
Talking head videos Just SUCK. Try doinga doc on an R/C Jet rally where you have $15 to $20 thousands Remote control airplanes screamm by at 200 mph trailing smoke like a bat on fire stright out of hell. Interviews where you may see the TALKING HEAD for a second or two but the video focauses on the parts of the plane he's talking about. How about 2 or 3 guys flying formation with their $20K jets whil you record their conversations over remote mics U never used before. That's my kind of editing. OH it's all done sitting in my Swivle, rocker, recliner, My laptop on a swivle stand with a 60" UHDTV ans monitor 2 Mouse on the righ armm Speed Editor on the left arm of the recliner. Now that's the way to edit.
Sounds like cool editing :)
hi will speed editor be used with DR19? also will it work with other pages?
Yes. Still works with 19 just fine, even better than before!
And yes it "works" on other pages. Just depends on the button. But the wheel works on the edit page which I like to use it there for sure.
I ordered the Editor for the full lifetime Davinci Resolve Studio software as well. It was $395 US from Adorama, which I had $65 in rewards. So $330 + Free shipping. So I got the keyboard for $40. That's a win. The Editor is solid, has good weight, and the wheel is very smooth. Still learning it. Great video.
🎥
An insane value 👌
bought one. came with a studio licence. so essentially was free. what a bargain!
it literally is such a steal. can't believe they offer the studio license with that keyboard. that alone makes it worth it.
Where you bought it from
Please teach me the cut page... I don't get it but I'd love to get it and it's use cases
Yeah that is fair. Was moving a bit fast
How long did it take you to get comfortable with it?
I am considering buying it since it has Studio version license included, so it's a no brainer that way. Just a little more expensive and you get a solid device.
not long once i actually focused on learning what each button did, in fact I have been planning to make a "speed editor for beginners" video. This one was too fast. Didn't cover the basics. And i think if you start there, you'll be using it in no time. Not all buttons are all that helpful in the beginning. but with just a few you are able to do some serious damage and turn cutting into a really fun process.
Again though, this is my "cutting tool" and so i do still use the edit page and therefore it can't do everything which is fine.
and yeah, for the studio license, it makes this purchase so easy to justify haha.
@@jakefelzien Thanks, appreciate that!
I will surely check video for beginners once I get my hands on this device.
I mainly hope that I can speedup my cutting process, because I have a weird workflow of recording screen and me speaking out of sync, and then I need to adjust clips to sort of flow together.
Could you also show in your upcoming video for beginners if we can change clip speed.
@@jakefelzien PLEASE make this video your priority - I'm just now getting into RUclips and am looking forward to getting started with Davinci and the speed editor, but know pretty much nothing about it. Your speed editor tutorial would be of tremendous value!! Please and thank you!! Got a subscriber
just bought one, love it so far. I used to skip the cut page but now itsa huhe part of my workflow
Yeah if you have the speed editor the cut page becomes so nice
Thanks for your impressions! And thanks for not stretching this video to 10+ minutes.
Always.
@@jakefelzien You said you'd make a tutorial... ;)
I know I’ve been swamped 😅😅
Everyone keeps wanting to nerd out about editing with me 🤣🤣
@@jakefelzien lol. I'm actually a year late for a certain tutorial I promised to make. So... Well... 🙈 No rush.
I've considered the Speed Editor for the iPad version of Resolve, but the issue is: I hardly use Resolve for iPad **Wheeze**
Yeah I’ve been intrigued but haven’t used it yet either. Made me want an ipad
Great news is this speed editor good for Ipad pro 1st gent post production ?
You've tested it? That is great news!!!!
Bro, the quality of your video is top-notch! Keep it up! Found something good online today... hehehe. Good stuff!
Oh man thanks so much 🙏
i got it...video up on my channel and y right...its a great product
Sweet 🤘
Agreed!
I really want the Speed Editor, but I am a sole edit page user and need to get over it and learn the cut page haha. I am excited to learn though!
I’m trying to put together a more detailed follow up to this 😂 realized I was going a bit fast and got caught up in the excitement of just using it 😂
@@jakefelzien Look forward to the more detailed workflow. Just purchased the speed editor, can't wait to get my grubby fingers on it
yeah hoping to start filming this video sometime this week@@TheFlyFishingFilmmaker
How well does it work with the new transcription tools? I find myself almost exclusively using it any time there’s talking head a-roll involved and feel like this would probably be a little bit bit slower but I really love the idea of having the tactile fine control
I’m not sure I’m following what you are asking 🤔
@@jakefelzien He's asking if the speed editor works smoothly with the transcription features, where you can select in/out points by highlighting the transcribed dialogue you want. Is the speed editor useful it that situation, or are you better off with a mouse?
Do you Think the speed editor is worth it if you only do A-roll, or only rarely uses B-roll?
ummmm. yeah probably. i still really like to use it to mix up the workflow and cut down long clips. like sitting at desk stuff? good to make that more fun and a bit faster too I think.
@@jakefelzien okay thank you ❤️
4:36 the mic windshield failed, what is that?
It’s a shit mic
Wow. **little tear** A perfect video.
Perfect?!?! 😳
great vid! thanks bro
Of course!
Well impressed, managed to pick one and the full bhuna Davinci Studio for £205 at an event the other day.
That is a screaming deal!!!!
@@jakefelzien yeah, twigged on to it at the KitPlus show in Glasgow - was thinking of getting Resolve Studio anyway, so when the deal was available. . . The Blackmagic guys referenced this video in the first place.
@@davidkirk1426 my video?
@@jakefelzien yep in reference to the Speed Editor Keyboard.
@@davidkirk1426 no freaking way 😂
Love the speed editor
Me too. Such a fantastic tool.
Can you edit the fade in / out on clips?
How long the fade in is?
@@jakefelzien yeah , that would handy especially on a ipad
@@PB72UK not sure would have to look at that specifically. Assuming you can with trim in and out
Horribly video, too restless
Excellent sentence. Great English.
