I’ve been editing with the speed editor in the “edit” page for 3 years. Jog, snap, slice, append, in/out, ripple delete, trim, all work great. I place the speed editor next to my mouse and my normal keyboard behind these, it works great.
Yup, me too exactly. I'm most comfortable with the keyboard on my left, editor on my right, with the mouse just in front of it...and almost all exclusively in the Edit page. Tried each keyboard on their own, and I'm always longing for a function (especially that jog wheel....soooo intuitive.) OK, I'll admit it: Bought it exclusively for that fancy wheel...and no regrets !
@@creator_x_aman yes. I purchased Davinci Studio 17 about 4 years ago. I just updated to Version 19, at no cost. The serial key you get is for the software, it's not attached to the device. I have Davinci installed on 2 Macs and 2 PCs. Each licence allows 2 instances to be running at the same time.
I agree with your description - it seems more like a "comfort editor" than a speed editor. I've been using the speed editor for about 5 months, and I don't think I am any faster. The experience is just more pleasant - especially having a jog wheel. Although, I quite often have to remind myself to use it.
It’s funny because I use it entirely in the edit page. It has source/timeline buttons to swap between them. So I’ll put my a-roll up on source, set in/out points with the speed editor buttons then add it to my timeline using the smart insert button. I do 1-handed operation though. Left hand on the speed editor and right hand on kb/mouse. I think that your takeaway really nails it on the head though: it’s not necessarily faster or slower, but it is definitely a lot more fun.
Awesome timing with this video! I just ordered mine yesterday and can't wait to integrate it into my workflow. I primarily work on the edit page, as my process involves using voiceovers and precisely cutting my videos to align with the voice for my tutorials. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the wheel can revolutionize my editing, especially since positioning the playhead accurately has always been a challenge for me. It would be incredibly helpful if you could create a beginner tutorial for those of us who are accustomed to the edit page but are now venturing into using the cut page, perhaps incorporating tips on utilizing the speed editor. Thanks for the great content and looking forward to learning more!
I considered getting the speed editor, but I watched a video once that recommended the Logitech MX Master mouse for editing. THAT is a gamechanger. The horizontal scroll wheel does what the jog wheel does, thumb button is my cut shortcut, and the middle button is my delete shortcut. Then your hand is also always on your mouse to do other things as well. It’s only about a hundred bucks, and it made the speed editor look completely useless for me. This confirmed it.
Thank you commenting this, I was watching this vid thinking that workflow looks annoying having to take your hand off keyboard/mouse to use the speed editor. Read your comment and was sold, just ordered mine. Thank you!
I used the same mouse you have but switched to the SE and am much happier. The scroll wheel is awesome (it blows away the thumb wheel on the Logitech), but it's far from the only feature that makes the SE better than a mouse.
I was also surprised to see all those multicam keys. A very cool thing to see would be a separate set of key caps that you could buy to replace keys you do not need and a software to remap the functions. After all it's a mechanical keyboard.
I bought mine a few years ago for $295 with license. It’s an amazing device. On cut page, it’s quicker to use in and out keys with ripple delete than split.
👍Another AWESOME helpful DVR video, thank you. I LOVE my Speed Editor. Being a newb starting out with the speed editor I don't have any old habits to trip me up, (thankfully as I know how frustrating that can be). The MultiCam buttons, I totally get it, though..... my initial work in learning DVR, (I am still VERY new to DVR), has been editing my wifes presentation videos, 3 cameras and a Power Point slide deck screen recording, using DVR Multi cam editing process is UNBELIEVABLY amazing and the Speed editor with those multicam keys enhances that experience just that much more. In this scenario it does speed up the workflow by at least 2x if not 3x-4x. It really is that amazing using DVR's built in Multicam workflow. Even if you are just using single cam talking head and use a lot punch in zooms, you can take that single cam recording, copy 2-6 times, apply different zoom/crop levels to each and treat each of those as a separate camera in the mulitcam work flow and BOOM! Jumpcuts to zoom-in you want is sooooo much easier and faster, (I do this sometimes with my wifes, adding a couple more zoom levels, makes it sooo much easier and faster to zoom in on an emphasized comment) Again, thank you. I learn so much from your videos that helps me in editing ours.
I have mapped the ripple-trim-backward-to-playhead to the 1 key on my numeric keypad and the ripple-trim-forward-to-playhead to the 2 key and use those keys in combination with the Speed Editor. I couldn't be without the SE. It's completely transformative. Perhaps THE best peripheral device I've bought.
If you just want to get a jog wheel in addition to your mouse and keyboard, try the Contour Shuttle XPress! It’s a wheel with to rings and five programmable buttons for 59,- Only downside - it has a cable.
Best decision I made after making the move to DaVinci Resolve from Vegas and Premier. The Jog Wheel is much fun to use! I used speed editors when I worked in Radio and TV, back then good decks were very cost prohibitive. The price point on this little deck made it a must have for me.
I have one and it is a great piece of kit. There is one issues, which many people in the forum keep pointing out. Why can you not customise keys on the speed editor? There are all those multicam keys with many people do not use if you could customise these it would be a huge help . Going further, Blackmagic could even sell optional keycaps to replace the camera numbers. This would this would be extremely helpful and also a small revenue generator for the company. Come on, Blackmagic listen to your customers . The more people the pointless out more likely it is to get done.
I also bought the speed editor when it first came out and the studio license was included a real great deal. I really learned Resolve by using the Cut page and do the bulk of my editing on that page since I was not used to using the Edit page. The speed editor also works with the iPad version. Just have to teach old dogs new tricks.
For me the biggest problem is that the Ripple trim to Playhead button is missing. I've had the device for 2 years but I just can't use it without the button. I don't understand why you can't freely assign the multicamera buttons.
I love my Speed Editor, especially with all the button functions that you get. Once you learn all the functions you'll wonder why you'd ever edit with a mouse. In only a few weeks I was editing 5x faster.
I got my Speed Editor free with Resolve when they first came out and I really like it. It will do some things in the edit page so it is not just for the cut page. I really liked when you dropped the speed editor. That was funny. I enjoy your videos. Keep it up.
I love this product! I purchased it when it first came out and it only cost me $300. The Studio version of Davinci Resolve was included with the Speed Editor. It works well and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.
I've had the Speed Editor for around 2 years now and I reckon it's well worth the extra. I use it one both the Cut and Edit pages, and it shines on the former. It took a while for me to get used to it - I'm in my dotage, so someone with a flexible brain should find it more or less instant - but once I didn't have to think what key to press, I was sold on it. The dial feels great, and is frame-accurate, getting to yher desired one quickly. Smart Insert is but a click, and the In and Out buttons are suitably large. The only downside is that it works only with Resolve. I'd love to see a hack for Blender. I went for the Studio upgrade and was a bit surprised to receive the SE. It wasn't mentioned on the 'Buy Now' page of the website. It was a German or Austrian company. To answer the question you posed when you opened your video: Yes. Buying both the SE and Studio is a no-brainer. Thanks for the video.
I was actually sceptical about the speed editor, but i opted for a fullversion of davinci so i tried it out and it felt way more comfortable to edit and gave the cut page, which i mostly ignored at that time a reason to be. I moved around that time and just didn't had the time to film or cut something. Today i felt like cutting an old project, ehich dusted on my harddrive, started without the speed editor and was immediately frustrated and went on the journey to find it out of all the boxes, which i still have to unpack. Does is make you faster? No I don't think so, but you can work way more precise in the same amount of time. So if you see it that way... yes there is time saved, but it's really more on the comfortside of things.
I love my speed editor... bought this when it was in the price of the Studio License - actually added to Studio License. Actually - after 3 years I do not know anymore how to use the keyboard. And - is is speeding up editing - but in my case not 10x... unless you want to cut, split, add basic transitions, move, append etc.... so basic editing. But of course then you go to coloring, effects, titles - ans actually this is what is using most of the time... but still - love this! I wish I would have the big full keyboard ;-) - but this is over my home studio budget...
Thanks for sharing! For some reason all the reviews of the Speed Editor I’ve seen so far totally omit any in-use details. That said, learning that the BMD SE lacks buttons for the two most used commands in editing videos: the Ripple Trim TPH IN and Ripple Trim TPH OUT - really sucks. I would think they must be the two best placed buttons over the jog wheel, cuz I normally scroll the timeline to where I want a cut and ripple cut a clip to there like 90% of my editing time. And they’re not even there, what a dumb thing to do, BMD…
Is this different from holding TRIM IN or TRIM OUT and moving the wheel? Because that edits whatever clip is below the play head. Be in Ripple mode to ripple trim. Use the cam keys to select the track.
Hm, I got the speed editor with DaVinci Resolve, no extra payment. So, why not. Never used it. But. I use Resolve to do my own music videos, so I am not really in need of the scroll wheel etc. Sounds silly. But I am glad I have it. And I am sure, I will come back to it.
I usually have the speed editor at the left of my keyboard, keyboard in the center, mouse to the right and my Stream Deck with DaVinci Resolve pre-programed keys behind the keyboard.
pls help is it possible to track multiple textboxes example: text 1 shows up then leaves then text 2 shows up. i got on my timeline like 100 textboxes from subtitles and i want to connect them all to a tracker without creating them in fusion?
I use mine for the selects timelines. Amazing time saver. I don’t really use it to actually edit. I find I am much more efficient and quick when editing on the timeline with my custom shortcuts.
Great review of the speed editor! I bought one and tried it with all my heart for a week but ended up sending it back. I did feel faster like I could cut faster with the jog wheel, but it didn't click with the way I work. I'm constantly switching between the editor and a browser to find information, source stock clips/music and do other things. I end up going back and forth between the jog wheel and mouse and it didn't maske sense. If I want to go to a specific part of the video, it's way faster just to get my mouse pointer over there and click. I love the "snap play head to cursor" shortcut that Premiere for this very reason but sadly Resolve doesn't have that shortcut! Another negative is that it's locked down to one piece of software. You can get a good jog wheel from another company that can be used on all kinds of software.
I really wish the keys on this were slightly less sensitive. They respond to the slightest hint of being touched. Also, I don't think there is a way to turn it off other than exiting Resolve. I sometimes take this thing with me and if you close your laptop with Resolve on and throw both in your bag you're going to have a bad time when you open your laptop back up.
Hi there, I'm still wondering if the speed editor was a good choice for me. Too bad the multi-cam part isn't reassignable keys for other options like if we were changing keyboard shortcuts.
I did not want to buy yet another device that is linked to just one software package so I decided to build my own jog wheel. Being an electronics engineer not the most difficult job for me. But after adding a lot of macro keys, I still have a problem deciding what functions to put on all the keys but the ripple trim ones are indeed a must for me to add.
Plan to have it in the future.....for now I still with tourbox with it's limitation for davinci. But I agree for my editing programs, the wheel is really helpful for fine scrolling...also with tourbox
Having trouble with my DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor keyboard. It's not responding during editing sessions despite being fully charged and recognized by my computer. Indicator lights aren't working either. Tried on different computers and reinstalled the software, but no luck. Any suggestions?
Nice! I'm a Premiere pro editor, and probably in a near future I want to try the DaVinci... About the Multi Cam shortcuts, can't we just change it to other functions? 😅
is it easy to add clips to markers with the speed editor? I want to edit some holiday videos. And i´m sitting in front of my 50" TV with DVR ^^ I dont wanna feel, that this is work. Some chilling editing sessions when i have time. I add markers to my music, that the clips are in sync to it. So when i insert clips from the pool to the cut page, is it easy to snap them to the markers? Actually i work wit a Logitech K400r keyboard. Feels super chilled, but not productive ^^
I would think that it should be possible to either update the firmware on that device or do some remapping in the editing software. Does it manifest itself as a human interface device ("keyboard") or does one have to install a driver for it?
I won one at the Resolve event in Amsterdam, and started playing with it. Instantly, I missed GO TO IN, and Jump to next / Previous edit. How did you experience this?
Is there a case for this to travel with? I ended up picking up a astra 2 backlight keyboard to use with my speed editor. Also sold the license (way better than 600 on the editor keyboard IMO).
Price difference right now, 16 April 2024 is only 66.25€... 399€ for the speed editor + license from local resellers or 332.75€ for the license from the bmd website. So.. although I don't really need it, if it's only 66.25€ extra... well... might get one anyway then.
So can't you remap a function to one of the keys on the speed editor? If you look up that function you like and then remap it to the Cam 9 function, then it should happen when you hit the cam 9 button, I think.
Sounds like Blackmagic should release JUST a Bluetooth jog wheel that you can use with your existing keyboard. Make it $95, include a Studio license and watch the money pour in 😂 (I’d for sure buy it)
You just bummed me out, I just got the studio version a couple months ago, would have so easily spent the extra $100. I just saw the price tag of $395 and didn't look further. uggh
Hmm... I was initially excited by this control surface but now I'm not convinced. Working in the the Cut page instead of the Edit page was the first shock I needed to get over. Joris, do you reckon you'll still be using this thing in a month from now? Be honest.
@@JorisHermans Anyway, the good news is that your competition is coming up and it'll be a good excuse to give away the stuff you don't use 😜...and if Blackmagic Design is reading this, I want to let them know that I really do love their products -- I reckon the Speed Editor's big brother Editor Keyboard will be my next purchase! 😉
Learning new keyboard is like attending to high school again , like I can do it and be better but that's a lot of work . Even if it is faster I'm Gona stick with my old keyboard
Hey Joris, here's a hack to ripple delete from the speed editor...it only works on Mac...I'm looking into a PC solution: ruclips.net/video/Xb1uvsvMI18/видео.htmlsi=l2sCsHlN-0XxfEG4
These cam buttons. Very useless. If I have 9 camera recorded edit, why should I use not more advanced keyboard.. I sent several mails to Davinci to update in software or firmware, also there is long forum post about this situation but they don't make any firmware update to use them as another functions, which they would make easily.. That pisses me off to much..
I hate to keep beating this dead horse to death ... But when are they going to implement an auto-scrub option? Where you get rid of the silent parts of the video and just leave the talking parts. Literally the longest part of the workflow, the part that I hate the most, I am forced to use 3rd party tools (janky 3rd part tools ... i'm looking at you timebolt) and It should be simple. Will I be forced to implement my own tool?

Does the jog wheel in shuttle mode allow timeline playback speed to be granular. For example, 1.1x, 1.2x 1.3x instead of the stupid 2x 4x 8x 16x

But it's wireless...! You could put it in the kitchen. 🤔😅
That was awesome at 40 seconds reaction loved that brother

I love the speed editor. So glad I got it.
The problem is you can't turn it off. You can use those "Cam" buttons for selecting tracks.
Amazing!
You filmed that whole clip with your hat on back-to-front!
Didn't you realise when you dropped in the ad?
😱

I got the Speed Editor on a Black Friday sale for $295 and I was about to buy the Studio version so it was a no brainer. I love it.

I just got it! But how you paste B roll in ch2 and start to controll it with the noob without the mouse??
Having trouble with my DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor keyboard. It's not responding during editing sessions despite being fully charged and recognized by my computer. Indicator lights aren't working either. Tried on different computers and reinstalled the software, but no luck. Any suggestions?
Does it work when connected by cable?
back to arcade time 😊
How many seats for DaVinci include the speed editor?
isn't the ripple button, on there as the delete button under full view? or is that for something else?
Does the scroll wheel do anything fundamentally different than what the Logitech MX Master scroll wheel could do?
xd nice one, thanks for the information plus the funny moments ^^
Great review, thanks 👍🏻
Nice! I'm a Premiere pro editor, and probably in a near future I want to try the DaVinci... About the Multi Cam shortcuts, can't we just change it to other functions? 😅
No we can't (yet)! 😭
is it easy to add clips to markers with the speed editor? I want to edit some holiday videos. And i´m sitting in front of my 50" TV with DVR ^^ I dont wanna feel, that this is work. Some chilling editing sessions when i have time. I add markers to my music, that the clips are in sync to it. So when i insert clips from the pool to the cut page, is it easy to snap them to the markers?
Actually i work wit a Logitech K400r keyboard. Feels super chilled, but not productive ^^
Thanks for this video! Is it possible to assign short keys to the multicam keys? (Or other keys)
Exactly what I was thinking but at the moment it doesn't seem like that's possible.
@@JorisHermans Hopefully that will be possible soon.
I would think that it should be possible to either update the firmware on that device or do some remapping in the editing software. Does it manifest itself as a human interface device ("keyboard") or does one have to install a driver for it?
Yep good buy! recommended!
I always enjoy your videos, thanks. I didn't know about that deal when I bought Studio....I'm still kicking myself aver that lol.
Do you have a video about the Deliver page and what your export settings are?
I won one at the Resolve event in Amsterdam, and started playing with it. Instantly, I missed GO TO IN, and Jump to next / Previous edit.
How did you experience this?
The ESC button is the only one that is customizable, so you can assign trim to playhead :)
But I need two 😭 start to playhead and end to playhead 😅
@@JorisHermans So you need two speed editors 😁
@@PiotrTkacz 😅 New video idea!
Is there a case for this to travel with? I ended up picking up a astra 2 backlight keyboard to use with my speed editor. Also sold the license (way better than 600 on the editor keyboard IMO).
Can you basically only use the scroll wheel as a mouse? For the rest i would use my keyboard
Great video. Cant you add a custom keybind with Ripple delete to playhead shortcut with the Speed Editor? Is that possible?
Not yet 😭
Can we use it in the edit page?
it will work in the edit page, I used it on the edit page all the time.
All agreed with you, I was expecting a tutorial though
Price difference right now, 16 April 2024 is only 66.25€... 399€ for the speed editor + license from local resellers or 332.75€ for the license from the bmd website. So.. although I don't really need it, if it's only 66.25€ extra... well... might get one anyway then.
So can't you remap a function to one of the keys on the speed editor? If you look up that function you like and then remap it to the Cam 9 function, then it should happen when you hit the cam 9 button, I think.
Hello, can you tell me where you bought it or where I can buy it?
👉🏻 amzn.to/3VEW4qn
@@JorisHermans thank you Handsome, a hug 🤗
Can you remap keys? Like the multi cam keys to something more useful for people that don't multi cam?
so split is blade ? thats all i need t0 know
Sounds like Blackmagic should release JUST a Bluetooth jog wheel that you can use with your existing keyboard.
Be honest.
Ask me again in a month. 😉
I bought my speed editor a couple years ago when it cost exactly the same as DaVinci Resolve Studio, basically making the Speed Editor free.
Definitly the best product to enter the Blackmagic ecosystmen.
Agreed 💯🫡
Couple years ago it was on sale for $295; I haven't unpacked the speed editor yet. :-/
I have one from December, but have no time to learn using it :(
I didn't know that "Nick Mitdemkopf" made videos about cameras. Im just joking, thank you very much for the content, really good videos and tips!
can you change the macros of the keyboard
No
Learning new keyboard is like attending to high school again , like I can do it and be better but that's a lot of work . Even if it is faster I'm Gona stick with my old keyboard
I use it for multicam and its great for that.
My mouse has multiple buttons using which I can move easily from timeline to another.
if you bought studio a month or 2 ago, can you get a refund and buy the whole package or add the speed editor for 100$ ?
Hey Joris, here's a hack to ripple delete from the speed editor...it only works on Mac...I'm looking into a PC solution: ruclips.net/video/Xb1uvsvMI18/видео.htmlsi=l2sCsHlN-0XxfEG4
Macbooks trackpad is my speededitor, once i got used to it theres no faster way for me
can you repurpose the multicam buttons you dont need to do other things
7:02 Can't you just remap those buttons?
If you want to save time the answer is yes I hate editing with out it
I just bought studio by itself 2 days ago, I should’ve done better research 😬😬
The speed editor was at $299 during a lot of time
These cam buttons.
I can only agree. The device would be so good...
Will I be forced to implement my own tool?
moet je iets in je youtube instellingen veranderen als je een engels kanaal wilt gaan starten?
Nope, gewoon starten in het Engels. Mijn locatie staat bijvoorbeeld gewoon op "België".
A real editor,. Will use it just about every day,. It's a tool , don't spect for dis item to work by itself . It's not AI.
