I picked up a Speed editor last summer and been loving it so far . As a travel "RUclipsr " the size and functionality of it is perfect for my needs and skill level . The fact that I can put it and all my editing gear in my 20L camera bag and set up in any cafe is a big advantage in my option ( which Im about to do right now ).
I'm an experienced davinci editor and I was skeptical on buying the editor's keyboard for the same reasons. thank god I watched the video. the double tap fuctions, jog wheel and the layout are deal breakers so I've decided to go with the speed editor. thanks for the most sensible comparison
i have both and i can tell you that i prefer the speed editor waaay over the keyboard. Its wireless, works like 15 hours on a single charge, connects automatically to my macbook on launch of davinci. the keyboard is just stupidbig, once you add color panel you will run out of space on the desk, the fact that its missing lights on the keyboard is insane, all the buttons and you cant see shit. One of the most important things that most overlook is that the speededitor was designed for cutpage which is way quicker to work with, and the keyboard is made for the edit page and i hate the keyboard wheel, its has an electronic brake which to me is completely useless but is the main reason why the keyboard can not be wireless..., oh and, who ever wants a regular keyboard, can just change the caps on the keyboard, its regular cherry switchcaps.
I've used both, getting the speed editor first and then the keyboard later. I ended up returning the keyboard. Part of it is that the keys had a very metallic sound when they bottomed out and I shared an office at the time and the other part is that it took up way too much desk real-estate. I spend most of my PC time typing for school, editing photos in Adobe LrC and Photoshop, and then in my video editing programs - which is currently Camtasia, Descript, and Davinci Resolve. It's a lot easier to just take out the speed editor for the portion that I'm using Davinci for than to always have the keyboard cramping up my space
Thanks for the info. I have a good mechanical keyboard already so I’d hate to take a step backwards there. Sounds like the Speed Editor would be the right choice for me.
As a relatively new Davinci Resolve user, I looked at both options and decided that the Speed Editor fit my needs best. After 10 days with it my dilemma is using it on keyboard tray and mouse on top of desk or vice versa. I’m loving the features it provides.
I loved my Speed Editor, but I didn't have a dedicated editing workspace. Now that I do, I'm going to switch to the keyboard. I hate having to move my hands from one keyboard to another (I like being super efficient with my hand movements and find it disconcerting to keep re-situating my hands). I'll still keep the SE for when I'm on the road, but that's it.
I bought the editor keyboard because of the jog/shuttle wheel. When I first learned video editing, back in the dark ages on the Sony BetaCam editing equipment, the jog/shuttle wheel was how you quickly got through the source tape. I found editing with a mouse to be a bit cumbersome. For me it was more like the editor I learned on and it was just more comfortable for me. When the speed editor first came out I got one too. It basically came with free studio DaVinci Reslove software for the same price as the software alone. It's always good to have a back up.
There are many comments that I am not going to repeat concepts, I had both and a mini panel. I have used both and while the small keyboard is very nice to use, the feeling of editing with the large keyboard was different, better for me. I'm using the Jog options a lot and once you get used to them they are very useful and effective.Edit, making cuts with the Jog like the Sony one is crazy, I think it provides a creative point when making fades, it feels better. It's like driving a BMW. All this without detracting at all from the Speed Editor.
I used the editor key board for a couple of months, it was great. The only drawback I had was that it was not backlit, it was a big problem in my dark environment. Then suddenly one day, it stopped working. Pressing one key was typing something totally different. The whole keyboard was typing different things, other than the button that was pressed. Did a lot of research and it seems to be an hardware issue. It's lying in the box now, and I'm back to my old keyboard. Contemplating getting a Speed Editor. Does it work as good in the EDIT Page?
Oh man, that sucks! Did you reach out to Blackmagic to tell them that happened? If you've only used it a couple of months it should still be under warranty right? As far as the Speed Editor, there are a few things that are different in the edit page vs the cut page but you can get used to it fairly quickly and I still think it's really cool. I've got a video talking about the speed editor a bit more in depth which you can check out.
Because of this video I and going to buy the full size keyboard. You might ask why? So let me tell you. I’m a new RUclips creator with about 40,000 subscribers. It’s growing fast. I used da Vinci and love it. But I don’t know a lot of the edit shortcuts. So now would be the perfect time because I don’t have the knowledge that might trip me up. Thank you for your video
I jumped on the Speed Editor since it was wireless (perfect for mobility) and the kb was nearly $1000 at the time. First issue was getting it connected to my computer, then came the constant disconnecting, and then the coup d'état was it being designed for the cut page exclusively. Throw in other quirks like not having a power button and there's no doubt I've regretted this purchase and would be reluctant to purchase any other surface tool from DaVinci.
I only had connection issues with it the first 2-3 times connecting it but since then it's been completely fine and auto connects with no issues. Technically it's not only for the cut page as it does work in the edit one as well, just behaves differently in certain situations. That said, since I got it, there have been a few projects with huge amounts of footage I've had to work on that would have been hell without the Speed Editor and the cut page. It has its quirks but I still think it's crazy useful once you get used to it. Also, you shouldn't really need a power button since it's only on when Resolve is. Otherwise you could just turn off Bluetooth before opening Resolve and it won't auto boot up.
I like the full size keyboard for the heavier scroll wheel. But they could really go much further and I would pay for it. There needs to be more keys that can be customized in my opinion. And backlighting! The lack of the double clicking options and special options seems like a miss too. Plus they could really benefit from more tools for clip positioning like y-pos. It would be awesome to see more keys like these. For keybinds, what I like to do is setup a second small keyboard, like a tarturus, for my own shortcuts. So the default shortcuts stay the same in Resolve, with the keyboard buttons being assigned to the original keybinds. So resolve stays the same, but the tarturus gets configured as I need.
Yah, and I also kinda feel like Resolve could just make a more "advanced" version of this, not unlike the advanced panel for colour but for editing, but macro buttons, extra button for custom fuctions so I could be used for the more hardcore editors lol.@@georgekamenov_
I got the editor's keyboard, but then picked up the Speed Editor bc the keyboard has imo 2 big setbacks: it's huge and worst of all, it doesn't have backlit keys. As an editor I work in semi darkness and have come to appreciate backlit keyboards. Especially when grading. That's a big setback of the editing keyboard.
I'm just about to pull the trigger and buy the speed editor. I'm doing it because I'm mostly an Avid editor (because that is what 99% of the production companies that I work with, use), but I want to start using Resolve on my own projects. But since all my keyboard shortcuts and even the 'style' of my editing workflow, is very geared towards Avid, I feel like using the speed editor to get used to working in Resolve will help me to separate the muscle memory that I have for editing with Avid. I'm hoping that It will help me and my brain differentiate between the two programs, even though I'm ultimately doing the same job on both. The cut page is VERY different from the way I edit in Avid, so I think the speed editor should be a huge help in getting used to this faster but different workflow.
Yeah, that might be a good way to approach getting more used to Resolve. The Speed Editor was built primarily for use in the cut page and once you get used to it it's actually pretty intuitive in there. Hoping you like it if you do pick one up. Could drop by the comment section and leave a comment sharing what you think once you've used it for a bit 🙂
Thanks! That cleared things up. How do you arrange and manage mouse, keyboard, and speed editor on your desk? It seems like you'd have to switch them around constantly.
@@michaelhornbek2983 Not constantly. I'll just usually have the speed editor in a drawer right next to my desk and when I'm going to be editing I pull it out and set it right in front of my keyboard which I push back a little bit so that I still have access to it. Then when I'm done with the cut page I'll typically move the speed editor to the side and bring the keyboard back to continue editing.
I am totally new to DaVinci and like the simple straightforwardness of the Speed editor. It makes more sense to use the laptop keys for everything else. Lets see how it goes when I get it tomorrow. Very good video and I will follow you, take care, maximilian m.i.c. (maximilian improvising composer)
I’ve been working in resolve for 3 years now. But I started with custom keybinds from another editor, 80% of the most used shortcuts are bound to my lefthand. I got the speed editor but even the speed editor makes editing less speedy for me because I can do everything with a mouse and keyboard a lot faster 😅. I was hoping the editor keyboard would fix that but I really can’t switch over to the default keybinds…
Yeah, it depends. If I'm in the Cut page, the Speed Editor makes everything way faster. But if I'm in the Edit page, I still mainly rely on custom keybinds on my regular keyboard as well.
Thanks for the video, George. I've had the Speed Editor (SE) for two or three years and have found it does everything I need. I did consider the keyboard, but the SE came with Studio for no extra, so there was little contest. I also have a keyboard that I love. It took some time to learn the muscle memory, at least beyond Source/Timeline, Stop/Play, In/Out and Smart Insert. Is it worth the money? With Studio, no contest. It's not quite a bargain, but good value for money. Without? Borderline. The Jog/Shuttle has a lovely feel and makes me almost believe I'm a pro. It saves time, a fair bit in my case. I hardly used the Cut Page before. I start almost all videos on Cut now. It's a nice bit of kit and if you can afford it, then I'd recommend it. If you're on a tight budget, then consider very carefully.
Great video George! You say 'The Editor Keyboard doesn't have the same multi-click functions (as the Speed Editor)..' . My question is: Does it have single click functions or Command Click functions for those multi-click keys on the Speed Editor, or are those functions completely missing in the keyboard? Thanks!!
Glad you liked the video! Yeah, so, for a lot of the things that aren't there as multi-click functionality you do just have them as separate buttons. Can't think of any that are missing.
Instinctively, I feel it is a bad idea to customise the keyboard shortcuts. I would imagine BlackMagic have thought carefully about their choices. I would say adding shortcuts is fine, but changing a standard setup is a bit risky - as this video demonstrates.
I don't fully agree that it's a bad idea. While Blackmagic have thought about their choices, they also give you the option to customize in the form of the keyboard customization menu. I'm sure there's a reason for that 😅
Using a streamdeck is probably a better option for short keys. I ended up buying an astra 2 keyboard. I figured my money was better spent on a mini panel.
Hi, I just bought a large Editor Keyboard new on the internet. And when rotating the wheel in JOG mode at each revolution I hear a noise only in a certain place, like a sticking noise. The wheel should spin freely and without any noise?
@@Resolve4u It depends on a lot of factors. Have you set up your own keybinds that you're used to? If yes, I would suggest the speed editor. But if you use the default Resolve binds the editor keyboard might be a better fit. It also really depends on how much you're willing to spend. The big keyboard gives you more functionality but it's also quite a bit more expensive. I personally found that the speed editor fits my workflow better. But that was only after I decided to try and learn how to use the cut page more. If I hadn't, I don't think I would have liked the speed editor as much. But unfortunately I can't make that decision for anyone else. It's also worth thinking about if you really actually need either of them since you can technically do everything you need to with just a regular keyboard and mouse as well 😅
@@georgekamenov_ Thanks. I often use cut tab to trim bad parts of my video. Plus, I want to buy one of these two hardwares, because I want the licensed studio version. So I should go with speed editor?
I use the default DaVinci shortcuts, because I remembered all after migrating from Premier pro. One thing is annoying with editor keyboard, it hasn't backlight. I use backlit keyboard to type works in dark room.
I think the speed editor with my backlit keyboard and mouse will be the nice combination, and it is also cheaper, moreover I can get the studio version for whole life, which is my dream. I collected the money half a year, and I have money now just for speed editor. It editor keyboard is more useful, I can have patience to collect the remaining amount in some days.
@George Kamenov - Thanks for the video... it makes my decision easier. I always have problems with video editing programs because they don't conform to the usual standard when it comes to the behavior of the scroll wheel. (Scroll-Wheel up/down, Scroll-Wheel + Shift - left/right, Scroll-Wheel+CTRL - Zoom in/out - This is Win-Standard and covered in 99,9% of all programs) I know most people don't care about this, but working in different graphics programs at the same time can be very confusing and often ends in sheer frustration. So I decided to build a PC just Davinci, complete with the editor keyboard and the micro color correction thing - although I usually name my PCs after Disney characters, this one will be called "The Odd". I hope this helps me stop being annoyed by the scroll function. ~lol~
Hey bro, do you have a video with your workflow to edit with the speed editor? I’m used to the making selects, move to the 2nd track then pancake editing but i don’t know how that will work with the speed editor.
Too bad they don't have the jog wheel as a standalone piece. Then add in a streamdeck for shortcuts which you can program to "your" way and you can also set it up for other programs
You just get a studio license key with it. Then from the Blackmagic Design website you download whatever the newest studio release is, and you use that license key to activate it. So technically you get the newest version.
Technically they're both for DaVinci Resolve but the big one is also a regular keyboard that would work in other software as well but you wouldn't be able to use a lot of it's functions that are specifically made for Resolve. And the small panel only works in Resolve
I've seen comments where people where lamenting about the quality of the keys on the Editor Kb, which they described as cheap. Where it first developed a shine, and then had the markings fade away. Which they called as even more appalling, seeing how Black magic Design doesn't sell keycaps as accessories. Have you noticed anything like it?
I haven't noticed anything like that as of right now, no. Then again, I haven't been using it that long so maybe that's also something to consider. To be fair, in my time testing it I've been clicking a handful of buttons more than others and they don't seem any different than the ones I don't touch. Also, like I mentioned in the video I did hand both keyboards off to editor friends for a few weeks at a time but neither of them came back with any of the buttons looking worn out or anything. Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with them down the line but I do plan on trying to keep them as clean as possible too 😅
i have had the Editor Keyboard since Jan 2020, since before the announced the Speed Editor. I have used it to edit about 20% of the videos I've posted to my channel since. Yes, the A, E and C keys have their markings fading away, and the space bar has the shine. When I bought it, I remember they said keycaps would be sold at a later date, but we're almost at the 4 year mark since I got mine.
Huh, that's unfortunate. Wonder if there are still plans for them to have replacements sold separately or if another brand could make third party ones. Haven't run into that issue yet with mine but I guess I've gotta be extra careful 😅
Yeah, it works with any custom key binds you've got. What I meant in the video was that if you set up your own functions that are different, the labels on the keys dont match so you're clicking a button that does one thing when Blackmagic labeled it to do something else. But it absolutely does work still if you have a custom set of functions
You can replace the key caps with generic versions? Getting the full keyboard next month. Getting back into editing and have no shortcuts preference yet. Also I need a good keyboard 😊 and I want studio license By the way you can run studio on 2 pc with that license. So I will run it on my workstation and my son will run it on his machine. Thats Value
I am not sure if you'd be able to replace absolutely all of the keys because some of them are slightly different sizes than the usual. For most of them you might be able to because the switches under them are standard cherry mechanical switches. Not 100 % sure on that though, might wanna double check that 😁
The speed editor cost a lot less and worked great with the ATEM generated ISO files letting me overlay 8 camera angles with the touch of a button and the scroll of the wheel. It is worth $400 whereas the keyboard at $1000 at the time seemed like a waste of money to me
I think it's a little ridiculous how expensive it is. Like I know it's highly specialized but is it really that much different than any other high end keyboard? was there really so much R&D required to make this keyboard to justify a $600 price tag? Like, I have a Daw controller with motorized faders and a display with program specific functions for multiple workspaces and that was only 500 bucks. My small DJ controller was only $200. Hell! an entry level Mac Mini is the same price as this freaking keyboard!!! A full on computer bro that's insane. I could justify $100 for this keyboard for sure, maybe $200, but no way in hell am I paying $600 for a plastic keyboard that does the same thing as any other keyboard but it has the functions written on it with a jog wheel and a couple extra buttons. edit: davinci resolve studio is $300, so it's not even like a bundle deal because that would still makes this a $300 keyboard! absolutely not worth it imo
I wouldn't say they're a waste of time. They're just meant for a different workflow than what some people are used to and that's okay. I personally really enjoy using my speed editor and find that it makes certain parts of the editing process a lot faster and simpler for me 😅
@@frequency_sequencer Well, in your specific case you might not want to look into either. That said, the big keyboard is also made to work across all pages, not just the cut one. But like I said in the video, that depends on if you've set up custom keybinds already, because in that case, using the editor keyboard might be more confusing than helpful.
Kind of. Some keys are slightly different lengths than what you'd find on a normal keyboard and you might have a hard time finding keycaps for some of the keys. For a bunch of them it might work though yeah
Hey don't You find LUNATIC that You are saying something on Factory keyboard VS Your custom order You already have made on Your standard keyboard?!? I mean, You are reviewing a porduct, with full logic built imto it by the ones who made the software itself...and them blamish it becouse You already made Your logic with shortcuts on some standard keyboard You have. Well, then You should be brave enough and say it more directly = "it is possible to make Your own shortcuts with every keyboard, but I do not like how the factory made it into their own software related keyboard" or somethimg like that! As this if any has no meaning at all by how You represented it!!

Glad you liked the video! Yeah, so, for a lot of the things that aren't there as multi-click functionality you do just have them as separate buttons. Can't think of any that are missing.
It is really beautiful and it also speeds up your work. I have one question: Does the product come with a key to activate Davinci Resolve?
Both of them do yeah
@georgekamenov_ is also include fusion page and fair light page?
It depends on which mode from the buttons above you're using. In the shuttle mode, the wheel on the big keyboard actually does have hard stops.
Will the speed editor work with the free version of Devinci resolve?
@@ryanworkman3032 It should work, yeah but if you're getting it new you'll also get a studio code with it 😅
I have experience in Davinci Resolve. Now I want to buy one of these two, but can not decice, which one I should pick up.
I want to buy one, because I now want to stick with studio version whole life. Please guide, which one should I buy.
An alternative or substitute for Speed Editor may be GoodKeypad
@George Kamenov - Thanks for the video... it makes my decision easier. I always have problems with video editing programs because they don't conform to the usual standard when it comes to the behavior of the scroll wheel.
(Scroll-Wheel up/down, Scroll-Wheel + Shift - left/right, Scroll-Wheel+CTRL - Zoom in/out - This is Win-Standard and covered in 99,9% of all programs)
I know most people don't care about this, but working in different graphics programs at the same time can be very confusing and often ends in sheer frustration.
So I decided to build a PC just Davinci, complete with the editor keyboard and the micro color correction thing - although I usually name my PCs after Disney characters, this one will be called "The Odd".
I hope this helps me stop being annoyed by the scroll function. ~lol~
I'm happy to hear my video could be useful then! Hope you end up being happy with your decision in the long run 🙂
Bro this keyboards or working in free version also ????
Each one includes the studio version so I don't think that is a concern.
Hey bro, do you have a video with your workflow to edit with the speed editor? I’m used to the making selects, move to the 2nd track then pancake editing but i don’t know how that will work with the speed editor.
I've got a video about how I use the speed editor, yeah
I bought the speed editor because then I can use it with my desktop at home and then also with my macbook on the road
Yeah, it definitely has the better form factor when traveling
@@georgekamenov_ yeah , even with a case I bought its still super nice travel sized
Too bad they don't have the jog wheel as a standalone piece. Then add in a streamdeck for shortcuts which you can program to "your" way and you can also set it up for other programs
When you buying speed editor and what version of studio license is available? Newest v19?
You just get a studio license key with it. Then from the Blackmagic Design website you download whatever the newest studio release is, and you use that license key to activate it. So technically you get the newest version.
@@georgekamenov_ oh nice than. Today buying one for sure ;)
Is this keyboard support the Final Cut Pro or adobe premiere pro or other video editing app
Technically they're both for DaVinci Resolve but the big one is also a regular keyboard that would work in other software as well but you wouldn't be able to use a lot of it's functions that are specifically made for Resolve. And the small panel only works in Resolve
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Speed Editor with Camtasia Studio?
Only works in Resolve.
Thank you for the quick reply, loved your video. @@georgekamenov_
I am confused. I bought the Editor Keyboard - plugged it in - started typing - worked perfectly with my custom keyboard setup that resides in Resolve.
Also I need a good keyboard 😊 and I want studio license
By the way you can run studio on 2 pc with that license. So I will run it on my workstation and my son will run it on his machine. Thats Value
I am not sure if you'd be able to replace absolutely all of the keys because some of them are slightly different sizes than the usual. For most of them you might be able to because the switches under them are standard cherry mechanical switches. Not 100 % sure on that though, might wanna double check that 😁
@@georgekamenov_ well I may have to learn premiere shortcuts first if standard keys don't fit.. that way I finally have a reason to buy a 3d printer 😇
Thanks for the insights.
The speed editor cost a lot less and worked great with the ATEM generated ISO files letting me overlay 8 camera angles with the touch of a button and the scroll of the wheel. It is worth $400 whereas the keyboard at $1000 at the time seemed like a waste of money to me
…or maybe you edit on iPAD in edition to desktop… it seems like the smaller one would be better in this case.
So do you happen to have an extra key 👀I’m trying to step up my game and I’m torn between buying the studio version
Looking forward to solving issues with the Editor keyboard 🔥😂
😂Hey, sometimes modern problems require modern solutions. And this one is decently heavy hahaha.
just remove the keycaps and use your config
💪
i think both are a waste of time as resolve works best with a normal keyboard and mouse... I wish though Blackmagic made a editor mouse
I wouldn't say they're a waste of time. They're just meant for a different workflow than what some people are used to and that's okay. I personally really enjoy using my speed editor and find that it makes certain parts of the editing process a lot faster and simpler for me 😅
@@georgekamenov_ I never edit on the cut page... which one should I look into then?
@@frequency_sequencer Well, in your specific case you might not want to look into either. That said, the big keyboard is also made to work across all pages, not just the cut one. But like I said in the video, that depends on if you've set up custom keybinds already, because in that case, using the editor keyboard might be more confusing than helpful.
If the keyboard uses Cherry MX style switches, you can always swap out the keys with another key set.
Bro what 😂
이번 총선에 선관위, 검찰, 경찰, 국정원이 무슨 계략을 펼칠지 모르니 단단히 준비하고 감시해야 할 것입니다
not buy the speed
Uh, alright? 😅
you had me sold with the benefits of self defense - what else would you need it for?
