Man you can make the magic mask much more easier in the color correct tab (davicni)

This is the only feature that makes me consider switching back to final cut on a regular basis. I think that and the magnetic timeline are the only reasons to use FCP. I can live without the magnetic timeline. But hover scrubbing or even a "move playhead when clicking" would make Davinci perfect for me

I’m one that has worked with 3D animation software for decades. Sometimes complex makes sense. With that said another advantage FCP has is how straight forward and easy it is to use. Another one should be native ProRes Raw support. Something Blackmagic Design outright refuses to add for business and political reasons. It’s unacceptable that grading software designed to work with every raw format under the sun refuses to support a raw format used by many. ProRes Raw has more diverse camera support meaning it’s there for many potential users. BMD holds that back because then nobody would buy their cameras. They also refuse to support the format thanks to the feud they have with Atomos. More Resolve users need to demand ProRes Raw support.

well i pref adobe pre pro since the timeline is free + you can do more stuff with adobe after effect combo i think if you in a mac and edit simple to normal video just go with final cut but you need to buy some plugings

The frame level syncing to clips is still pretty legendary. It's early days, but seeing the support still existing is positive. But once you go fusion for mograph its very addicting.

fcp only has broadcast standard captions, while it is great in the professional world, it's just sad in the social media world because it is just so easy to do it with a plugin but then again other tools that cater to the social media influencers/content creators gang just do it for free anyway. Really hope they bring a titler built-in in the next update.

and then text=based editing is another whole layer to this. hoping this is just the start for these tools in FCP and we get FCP 12 before 2037 :p

The fact that we are in 2024 and still don’t have proper title captions is absurd. Even the $70 filmora has captions and ai features. I have a solution for the closed captions to titles I made a quick video on the other day. You can’t however determine word count and FCP closed captions only let you go so short in length. But it’s pretty quick solution nonetheless.

I’m amazed every time I use my brand spanking new M4 Pro MBP. My first laptop was circa 1993. It ran DOS. It had a battery life of about 30 minutes if you were lucky. Only program I used was Lotus 123, an early spread sheet. My first MBP was a 2016 base model. That had a i5 with 8GB RAM and a 256 GB HD for $1499. Now if you buy the base you’re getting a smoking fast machine $1599. Amazing how far computers have come.

Crazy that on that video someone commented that Fusion page is the way to do magic mask and here, people say it's color page lol. Agree wholeheartedly. I just upgraded my M2 MacBook Pro to the M4 MacBook Pro and it gets even better. Finally the M4 Pro chip is a Pro chip. The increase in performance core ratio to efficiency cores gives it a kick we didn't have before and the battery life just got better. Go figure that out.

I don't think it looked all that much better than Resolve, and I've never had any issues with real time playback in Resolve using Magic Mask. Should have put it in Better mode, and use the Color Page... I also think that you might not be using Magic Mask in the best way possible, you can also add negative parts for Magic Mask (which you did for FCP, but skipped for Resolve). I get it, it's a cool new feature in FCP, but I would have said they were basically equal, although Resolve has a much higher ceiling, if you were going to start doing some really complex compositing. IMO, I have no interest in round tripping footage, so there's really no temptation to use FCP, because I would still have to do color in Resolve anyway so, I am probably a bit biased.

Davinci will upgrade Magic mask again soon. I have to stick to just one editing software, don't know how people float between more than one. I can't keep up with davinci let alone multiple editing programs. So far Davinci has been able to handle my insane edits...kinda. I am on the dark side right now with a 4090 desktop. BTW magic mask in Davinci is much much faster when done on the color page. I don't know why this is, but that's the way it is.

I’ve downloaded the Final Cut Pro trial to try out the magnetic mask, and it is fast, like, mega fast on my MacBook Air M3! Way better than Rotoscoping in After Effects.

I completely agree with you that FCP's magnetic timeline leaves everything else behind, and the comparison you've made is absolutely accurate. However, one thing I really like about DaVinci is that they genuinely listen to their users and release updates quickly. This is what makes Blackmagic special, and I want this video to reach the team of Blackmagic.

DUDE! YOU GET IT! That skimming playhead is *absolutely, incredibly, and undeniably* one of the best inventions I've ever come across when it comes to editing digital media like video and audio. I do quite a lot of audio engineering work and I WISH any of the digital audio workstations would have this. I sometimes actually edit audio in FCP just because the skimming playhead (and the magnetic timeline) allows me to edit a track of audio so quickly. Of course, as a full-time video editor working in FCP, the lack of the skimming playhead is one of the reasons I never want to cut videos in an NLE that does not have this. Premiere and DVR lovers can argue all they want, but I feel like it's not something you can really “get” until you really edit with it exclusively for a while, and then go back to an NLE that doesn't have it. Yes, you could objectively measure why the skimming playhead is faster, but I feel like it's not even about efficiency, because when I cut in FCP, I don't active think that I'm being really efficient. It's just that feeling of fluidity, that “frictionless feeling” that it gives you, that makes the skimming playhead such an incredible tool in cutting footage. Also, if you use a trackball like I do…that skimming playhead is like on steroid. You won't even believe how fast it is. Thanks for making this video, Jake. Such an underrated feature.
