    I heard plan to redevelopment of the area since the main port was moved to Laem Chabang.
    Only some part of it complete since there was a large fire destroy the area, so they need to move to flats built by government, those are willing to move since there is no home anymore.
    But the others don't.
    Thing is, it's free real estate in the center of Bangkok, and its worth living in slums.
    20 years passed those children that grown up in slums now has good work and salary but choose to stay at their old home in slums because it save a toms of money, yes most of them are not poor anymore but still cannot afford a house or condos.(save at least 5000-10000 Bath a month).
    Some of them wealth enough to moved our but their senior choose to stay there (mostly) because of the community. So basically there is no option but to built the apartments and community area in place near Khlong Toey for them, but it still long way to go.

    I accidentally stumbled into some impoverished areas in Bangkok, but this is a deep dive. An important eyeopener. It's critical that nothing gets swept under the carpet, so people have a better understanding of how and why poverty exists. The causes of poverty are multiple and interrelated: labour issues (not only unemployment, but also wages), race and gender issues (see structural, systemic and/or institutional racism and sexism), and policy issues. The tip of the iceberg for such a subject, but if you want to help, Pat posted that link to Bangkok Community Help.

    • @mvd4436
      @mvd4436 Год назад +9

      The causes are macro economic and always have been. Racism and sexism doesn't have anything to do with it

    • @therock8224
      @therock8224 Год назад +9

      You definitely deserve your moniker, chairmanmao. Your comment comes straight out of the Marxist playbook. Racism has nothing to do with poverty, especially not in a country that is extremely homogeneous such as Thailand (although technically, it's hetereogeneous in terms of ethnicity, but homogeneous in terms of race and culture).

    • @adamday2067
      @adamday2067 Год назад

      Please stop propagating the 'race','gender' and 'sexism' card as a cause of poverty, its total nonsense. Lack of critical education and job specific skills are the core reasons.

Whatever the eventual solution to congested slum living I hope it isn't high rise blocks. @White Rabbit Prophecies Good story and happy it turned out so good for you..indeed self made... I have never been dirt poor. I did lose a fortune twice though.. from big hero to absolute zero...Now building my third. .Not my fault but does that matter? My wife comes from the streets literally. Slept on trainstations when 5 yrs old eating from garbage cans. no shoes and one set of dirty clothes was all she owned...She pushed hersefl up to be owner of a real estate development company in Thailand and turned that fortune into a finance company ....She left school at 9...I deeply respect her will to make it anyhow any way. Yea man it's mostly in the head how you maintain yourself and how you grow. That being said i can understand many break down before that.. That's why although i do not cry for every poor person anymore. i will never look down on them or refuse them human responses and friendships....It is the same respect i have for any person. Rich or poor that i show to them too. I love every human. Not the choices they make...Good luck to you man. Thank you for your story.

      Two years ago The Thai king established an old-age pension 10 US dollar a month while he has 11 palaces all over Thailand and more than 12 billion assets in Germany and Switzerland.
      King Rama 9 put all the show on TV and said that Thailand is the best country in the world we have the best king in the world and the best religion in the world, this cunning king know how to make stupid people exuberant but robbed all the tax money stashed in Bavaria Germany many billion US dollars and when he die and go to hell on the sin of Dante Inferno, he left the treasure for his son, now his son has to pay inheritance tax around 35 %
      This is the news from Globe :Thai King Mhavjiralongkorn is facing fresh controversy in Germany as local investigators are reportedly looking into whether he has paid the correct property and inheritance taxes in Bavaria, where the Southeast Asian monarch spends much of his time.

    When my Thai wife was young, her family lived in an area similar to the one show. They came home late one afternoon and the area was burnt to the ground. They were left with nothing, a very hard life. It has since been rebuilt but still a fire hazard death trap, much of the problem is the city fire people couldn't get in because of the very small walk ways. I would say in that area nothing has changed.

    I sometimes do charity work, with a friend from Singapore, who does it quite often. I’ve been in the slums of Klong Toey a number of times. One recent Halloween, I was impressed with how caring of the younger children, the older children were. How patient and polite they were. Many of them are without one or both parents. Yet in many ways they were unspoiled, more caring and more appreciative than kids from rich families.
    They were so happy that someone cared about them.

    Thirty years ago, used to rent a cold-water apartment right on the edge of the slum, the quick route to the apartment was to leap over a klong and dive down some of the alleys - never had a problem even after coming back in the early hours of the morning. However, less amusing were the lads on two-stroke motorcycles who used to scream their engines on the road outside the apartment at two or three in the morning. Often paid a guy with a motorcycle to take me down to Silom, it only occurred to me later that he might not have been a moto taxi driver but he obviously appreciated the money. The live animal butcher’s market in Klong Toey was really gross, terrible stink. Great video. Isn’t the whole area slowly sinking?

    Fair trade?
    1970 Thailand had a population of 35 million people. 2015 it got over 70 million people. I think it's a problem when a country double the population in a such a short period. 1950 it was 20 million people. France: 41 million year 1950, 50 million 1970, 64 million 2015. Don't try to simplify and dumb down. How much do other countries pay for Thai products? Fair trade?
    If a society are built on the children taking care of their aging parents they will have a big family for that reason. Fair trade, the opposite to free trade globalism!

These realities are a part of the truth in Thailand, and no Thai government of any shape can be truly successful and just without addressing these and some other sad but reparable situations in the country. All it takes is money and the will, and while there is a lot of money accessible, the will to change these things seems to be harder to locate.

Bangkok should stop trying to mimic Singapore, as much as I have enjoyed visiting Singapore, Bangkok has far too much going for it that risks being destroyed. Lastly, someone should look at signing those kids up, they have a mean right foot, I would have struggled to keep that shot out.

    I have visited a few shanty towns throughout Thailand over the years. I have never once felt threatened or unwelcome. Have had a few Thais offer me food and water while wandering about. It is a sad situation but many make the best with what little they have. It is a very complicated issue. Perhaps not spending billions of baht on train line improvements the money could have been much better spent on so many better things.

    It always amazes me how most charitable organizations helping the needy in Bangkok are not from Buddhist temples but from Westerners. (Note: Maybe there are Buddhist foundations that help the needy but I am not aware of it.)

      I’m Thai and if I didn’t watch this clip I wouldn’t know that there are foreigners help poor people in slum in Bangkok, but I know that there are many Buddhist temple helping many people. The Buddhist temple are places where the poor can take free food and shelter. And they do a lot of charity. So I think it really depend on who you interact with, if you mostly contact with the westerner in Thailand with closed bubble so you may know only westerner charity and you may don’t know what happen in Thai society since majority of them don’t speak in English and don’t do advertise about their charity in English.
      About people in slum, there were project that government built building for them to stay but it far away from the downtown, they took it and rent it out and stay at the same place because in the town is easy to go for work and get the job. Not only the poor can’t afford to buy property in the downtown but average Thai who graduate from universe can’t also afford to buy condo or home in downtown. The problem with people around the world now is everybody want to stay in the downtown but it’s too expensive because the government allow foreigners(who are richer than the local which is also depend on currency exchange) to buy the property that they become expensive and the local can’t afford to buy them. The area are belong to government just because you stay there for a long time doesn’t mean that you are the owner of the land.

I for one would love to have a house along one of those canals. Venice city in California build a man made canal, and the house around there are spectacular and so peaceful.
