There are many u-tubers on RUclips who are showing different areas of Bangkok on a regular basis, unfortunately they fail to give any useful information about that area.
But you are not one of those, you make your videos with a different approach, it is research based, highly informative and entertaining. That is the reason
I respect you and your efforts and watch your vlogs regularly.
    I believe that
In the future your vlogs will be considered as the most authentic historical and visual documents of Bangkok, and for this, people of Bangkok should be thankful to you.

@@BangkokPat Yes Pat you sure are right. One can feel that now you know Patpong very well and you would be the best possible guide to show the area and tell about it's past until present time. I had to watch your video once more which I rarely do otherwise.
Michael Messner from the Patpongmuseum seems to be is a Swiss national i bet. He has a great knowledge about Patpong, the past of the place and how it all started, the connection with the secret service, the superstars David Bowie, Van Damme, Alice Cooper and so on. These and many more are all aspects of patpong that i didn't know about and that are very interesting
When talking about musicians one song comes to my mind also connected to Bangkok and Patpong. This popsong giving a glimpse of the multi-diverse faces of this amacing city: It's a song by Britisch singer Murrey Head dating from the year 1984 "One Night in Bangkok" That song was played all over in Bangkok and I can still hear the music and the lyrics of the song: "Bangkok, Oriental Setting / And the city don't know that the city is getting / The creme de la creme of the chess world in a Show with everything but Yul Brinner .... and the refrain goes: ... / One Night in Bangkok and the worlds your oyster / The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free / You'll find a god in every cloister / And if you're lucky the god's a she / I can feel an angel sliding up to me. .... and so on. Those are great memories me being young in my early twenties about to discover this world on a shoustring and i think it was my second time in this amazing city that has to offer so much and never sleaps. Thank you Pat for connecting the dots!

Thank you Pat for a priceless video.
Anyone wondering about the origins of Patpong will find the video both educational and absorbing. A must watch.
Whenever I visited Bangkok, I always made time to head to Mizu’s for a dinner. There may have been Japanese food on the menu, but for me it was usually the saba fish on a sizzling hot plate or the occasional black pepper steak. I always brought my own bottle of JW Black Label and paid only for the Singha soda water mix. The Japanese owner who was himself the cashier, also operated a mini compo stereo system from which he played a continuous selection of jazz classics - no other music besides cool jazz. When the owner became invalid, his significant half managed the restaurant till it finally shuttered about 3 years ago. Regulars ignored the many cockroaches thar ran over the floors and walls. Sui generis, Mizu’s. Sadly missed.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  2 года назад +8

I agree, but Patpong had a bit of a dodgy reputation, one which scared people away from the relatively sane Nana or Cowboy. It could bounce back, and reinvent itself as a high end dining and drinking area, but that is asking a lot.

@@BangkokPat you got that right, in a dozen trips since 2007 I've never been. Heard how they suck you in at the upstairs places, present you with a huge lie of a bill and then a gang won't let you down the stairs until you pay. Did not take them long to come down, stuff his money in his hand and tell him to piss off haha. Good video.I am surprised Patpong may be re-opening at all. There was an article in the Bangkok Post last March that the street was on it's last legs because of the pandemic. We have had
nothing but eleven more months of lockdown since then...Sad....You hit most of the main points.I will just add that Safari go-go also opened in 1969 and it's interior looked very similar to how
most Vietnam-era bars did.The David Bowie movie was pretty cool.I saw it for the first time about nine years ago and I loved the scene in Superstars.

I think Patpong has possibly had its heyday, let's be honest most people prefer Nana or Cowboy and Patpong has that seedy stigma attached to it in the form of scams and sex shows. I heard rumours of it being turned into an upmarket dining and party zone.

I love seeing the kodachrome effects of these and the cars...wow!!!! Its like you're the Smithsonian Institute of BKK. Its like watching an old Vietnam war movie except real life
I was wondering why the name "Mizu's" for the restaurant. Mizu means "water". On the menu there's no Japanese food though.

Fantastic explanation of the evolution of Patpong. One thing that I thought was missing was the night bizarre which was very much part of Patpong and used to be (very noisily) set up every day at 4pm and would sell a lot of tourist merchandise in the night time then were taken apart again in the early hours of the morning. I am an expat and have lived in Bangkok for 17 years, many years ago I had a special 'friend' who did the day shift in one of the bars, she clocked off at 7pm so as long as I took her to the food court in the multi story carpark near Foodland she would usually come back with me to my apartment in Bangkae for free (never paid any bar fines as I would leave before closing time and discreetly wait for her.) Last year I was working in Silom and visited Patpong, during the day I made a video of the current locations where the Deerhunter shots were made and later replayed the movie. Great feelings of nostalgia.
