@@tokyochuchu I have been a Bunnymen fan since 1981 and I liked your list and honest opinion, I agree with you in I cannot split Ocean Rain and Porcupine depending which mood I am in. Some things I disagree with but hey! Be a bit boring if we liked the same tracks and good to see a different perspective of what someone else thinks is a poor or good track.
The Moon album was something I was really looking forward to at the time of its release and such a disappointing outcome as I always thought that their style of music would suit this big orchestra thing, saying that there are a couple of good tracks on it.
Oh! And I totally agree with you regarding The Killing Moon as not being their best single and Ocean Rain is probably one of the greatest ballads ever.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought Reverberation was a great album. I thought the 2nd half of the album was very good, while not as strong as the first half. But False Goodbyes closed out the album strong.
Like others though, I don't really consider it a Bunnymen album. Unlike others, I was able to listen to it as a separate band and give it a chance. I really think critics and fans panned it simply because they resented the fact that they tried to retain the name without Ian doing the vocals.... which is a real shame. Burke had a terrific voice which really suited the music well. I was always disappointed that they never released another album with Burke.

I tend to like quite a few bands from Liverpool outside of the Beatles era bands, the Bunnymen are one of them; The La's, The Coral, OMD, Cast, The Lightning Seeds just to name a few... I first heard the Bunnymen & U2 at around the same time; around 1980; U2 I took no interest in until 'Joshua Tree' & three albums later had no interest once more... The Bunnymen I liked instantly, they are one of my all timers and McCulloch has one of my favourite voices of all time and like Johnny Marr, Will Sergeant is an inspiring guitarist...
    01... Ocean Rain 5* ... Everything...
02... Porcupine 4.5*... The Cutter, The Back Of Love, Heads Will Roll...
03... Echo & The Bunnymen 4.25*... Over You, Lips Like Sugar, The Game, All My Life...
04... Crocodiles 4.25*... Stars Are Stars, Rescue, Villiers Terrace...
05... Heaven Up Here 4.25*... A Promise, All My Colours, Over The Wall...
06... What Are You Going To Do With Your Life? 4.25* ... What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?, Rust, Get In The Car... I like this album more than it's placing suggests, several very strong songs...
07... Evergreen 4*... Don't Let It Get You Down, I Want To Be There (When You Come), Nothing Lasts Forever...
08... Flowers 3.75*... Make Me Shine, Kings Of Kings, Buried Alive...
09... Siberia 3.5*... All Because Of You Days, Everything Kills You, What If We Are?...
10... The Fountain 2.75*... Think I Need It Too, Do You Know Who I Am, The Idolness Of Gods...
    11... Meteorites 2.5*...
12... Reverberation 2.5* ... Not a bad album but at times I don't get along with the song writing, Ian is definitely a huge miss ... McCulloch's solo outings 'Candleland', 'Mysterio' & 'Slideling' are all better in my opinion and if ranked on this list would slot nicely in the middle section,1 or 2 of the songs would also feature in my top 10...
13... The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon 2.25/5... Sadly Ian's voice is not what it once was, I seem to remember reading that he wished he had packed up smoking early in his career, I wish he had...
    Songs:-
    10... Lips Like Sugar
    09... A Promise
08... Seven Seas… (Just like ‘Friday I’m In Love’ by The Cure it is pop perfection to me)…
    06... The Cutter...
    05... Angels And Devils (B. side of ‘Silver)… Why was this a B. side…
    04... Ocean Rain…
    03... Rescue
    02... The Back Of Love...
    01... Rust...
I tried to keep away from the singles but they are just too good, maybe I should have done a list for singles and one for album tracks... I adore 'Killing Moon' , I do get fed up of it and don't listen to it for ages, then it comes up on a random playlist and I understand why it's their most famous song; and in that moment it would take number one on my list but today it misses...

Buried Alive (Flowers), Constantinople/Market Town/Meteorites (Meteorites - thanks to Youth for the production) are good examples, but given relationship between Mac and Will is now shot then I'm done, but the memories will always be strong.

I find myself going back to Siberia. Great album. When I first heard Parthenon drive I got chills: the guitar work, rhythm, the lyrics. I thought it was true return to the Bunnymen sound.
When I first got into them I listened to the live EP Shine So Hard repeatedly( the version of Crocodiles and Over The Wall blew me away). Awesome example of their early years.
Lucky enough to see them live twice before the breakup.

Echo & the Bunnymen are one of my favorite bands. These albums were kind of hard to rank, except maybe the last few.
    1. The Grey Album... the first Echo album I ever owned, so a bit nostalgic for me.
    2. Heaven Up Here... I LOVE this record.
    3. Crocodiles
    4. Ocean Rain... Classic
    5. Porcupine
    6. Siberia... Best of the reunion albums
    7. What Are You Going to With Your Life... So underrated
    8. Evergreen

    10. Meteorites
    11. The Fountain
    12. Reverberation
    13. The Moon & Stars... What the hell were they thinking with this one?
Check out 1995's 'Burned' by Electrafixion, Ian and Will are both on it. On this list, I'd put it between Evergreen and Flowers. Also 1989's 'Candleland', Ian's first solo record. On this list I'd put it at the top, I just LOVE that record... but that might be nostalgia. In 89, The Cure's Disintegration, Ian McCulloch's Candleland and Kate Bush's The Sensual World were kind of like a trilogy of records that I just really loved and still do to this day. They even have similar covers.

1 Reverberation (Far from running out of steam, both Heaven Up Here and the equally brilliant Reverberation reach a perfect crescendo towards the final songs!)
2 Heaven Up Here (as above)
3 The B-sides/rarities album they need to make. (The original Bedbugs & Ballyhoo, Fuel, Broke my Neck, Antelope and throw in Lowdown from Electrafixion)
4 Crocodiles(Nice punk debut? Sorry utterly ground-breaking and astonishing is a better description. The greatest debut album ever, with the exception of "Script of the Bridge, but don't bother, if you can't get the Bunnymen you certainly won't get The Chameleons )
5 Porcupine (In Bluer Skies is one of their greatest songs, along with Flaming Red from Reverberation)
6 Ocean Rain (Innovative change of direction, but some fillers)
7 Siberia (In the Margins is the ultimate swansong, utterly great-but too much filler)
8 Evergreen (The songs do not sound the same. Too young to Kneel and I'll Fly tonight would put The Verve to shame. The greatest comeback since Lazarus)
9 Flowers (some of the songs speak to my middle aged dread, and SuperMellowMan is one of their most beautiful and poignant songs. But his damaged voice
10 The Grey Album. (Blue Blue Ocean is nice, New Direction is classic! Too much filler though.)
is noticeable on the other songs. King of Kings is not bad. But there are some depressing songs as well.
As for the rest, I do not agree with most of your list, but have to agree that "The Fountain" marked the end of the Bunnymen as a creative force. Unlike the brilliant
Mark Burgess of The Chameleons, who never had a beautiful voice and face to ruin with smoke, drink and drugs in the first place, the Fountain shows Mac a bit
like Superman when he lost his powers. It has to be said that lockdown has restored quite a bit of Macs voice and they are now quite a good self tribute act.
Check out Poltergeist with Les and Will duelling to see how the loss of their rhythm section did a lot of damage as well. But perhaps they should have stuck with
Noel Burke, who totally restored the bands powers. The Bunnymen MK 2 were even more authentic than the original.

How can you say reverberation is a bad album?

I don't know man... After the first couple tracks I just don't care for it. But nice to see it getting some love from you anyway!

@@tokyochuchu Reverberarion vocal melodies are so contagious. I love Noel Burke's singing as it drives the whole album. Never had the impression it emulates jangle pop cause it doesnt even have arpeggiated chords. Maybe you should listen more and more and more.

What would you pick as The Bunnymen's best LP?

  • @nickvandervyver6179
    @nickvandervyver6179 2 года назад +1

Going just by the CDs I have and how much I play them, my ranking is as follows (If the LP is not there it’s because I either never bought it - ‘the grey album’ or else I only have on vinyl and thus can’t play in the car or on the MP3 player)….
    1. By a country mile is WAYGTDWYL….. no bad song, never out of my car CD player - fantastic album
    2. Ocean Rain (plenty to think about, absorb and luxuriate in)
    3. Siberia (great rock, pop, ballad album)
    4. Porcupine (The Cutter, Never Stop and Back of Love are so good that it doesn’t matter that I hardly listen to any of the other songs)
    5. Meteorites (better pop music than the Fountain)
    6. The Fountain (nice pop music - glad they are still recording/releasing)
    7. Evergreen (I like it particularly because I was so pleased/relieved it was a good ‘comeback’ album)
    8. Flowers (love the lyrics & tunes but the sound is just too dense)
    9. Reverberation (I never gave it a chance before, only got it 2nd hand recently)
Mostly for Heaven Up Here I used to play A Promise over and over again… I probably should have just bought the single!

It probably matters that I am about the same age as the band and bought the albums in the same order as they were released….

My list wouldn't be too different. Let's see:
    01. Ocean Rain
    02. Porcupine
    03. What Are You Going To Do...
    04. Siberia
    05. Crocodiles
    06. Echo & The Bunnymen
    07. Meteorites
    08. Flowers
    09. Heaven Up Here
    10. Evergreen
    11. The Fountain
    12. The Stars...
And, well, I must admit I never gave Reverberation a chance. Maybe one day.

as the first five are so brilliant (yes, I rate the grey eponymous one), the rest are total rubbish. Flowers in particular is just insanely unlistenable. oh dear you are way too soft on Meteorites: another utter failure. Siberia? YOU are crazy! hahaha. come on, mate.

What a joke putting Meteorites anywhere better than 2nd worst. And trying to pretend it's better than Reverberation?!?! Between this and your Aztec Camera rankings you need help.

    • @tokyochuchu

That, sir, is your opinion and you're wholly entitled to it. Just as I am entitled to mine. And to that end; Meteorites owns Reverberation.

It is obvious that Echo and the Bunnymen was not that important to you. The first 4 albums were far better than anything that came afterwards with Heaven Up Here being the absolute masterpiece. Everything after Ocean Rain is insipid, uninspired, and frankly boring. The mystery, excitement, and danger were absent from the grey album onward

    • @tokyochuchu
      @tokyochuchu  Год назад +1

Sad that you can't enjoy such amazing records like Siberia, What are You Going to Do With Your Life or Evergreen. I loved their classic records and a lot of their modern records too. Not quite sure how that makes Echo & the Bunnymen less important to me than you. 🤔
