I'm seeing a few reports from actual pilots saying many things have improved. Server issues and glitches can be fixed. People not noticing improvements are missing the subtle stuff, I agree. I think this looks really promising.

Great review of the R66 and MSFS2024 and as always great flying, you make it look easy! The R66 is sadly one of those aircraft that still hasn't appeared in my sim :/ Glad to hear that you consider the helicopter flight models to be more realistic =) Can't wait to try and fail to attempt the low-level pirouettes myself 😅
@@vintagesimulations Thanks! I always appreciate your kind words. when everything is working the new sim is incredible! …when everything is working. They will get it sorted. I keep reminding myself how bad 2020 was at first too.
Thanks for this. In a few weeks time when the obvious bugs have been fixed and the impatient "must have shiny new toy NOW" foot stamping younger ones amongst us have got in and are using and enjoying the sim, all the launch day issues will be long relegated to the back of mind - just like the grumbles and complaints from MSFS 2020 at launch. I remember using the very first flight sim on an Amiga in the 80's. It was wireframe only and one airport and I was still blown away ! Look how it has evolved. We're totally spoilt today but are too "spoilt" to realise it 🙂! I'm watching your footage and it is like looking at out of cockpit views from a real chopper !
You know what I am super happy about? In your video I could see that the rotor blades no longer throw those irritating strobe shadows on the side pillars and the interior in general. I know, that was the closest thing to the rotor shadows they could get within the confines of a framerate-driven sim, but I think that no shadows at all is in this case better than a poor approximation. Looking forward to get the sim when the waves have settled...!
Good point. I thought it odd at first that there isn’t any shadow above the mast housing, but you’re right. It’s better than the strobing shadow from 2020
I knew I could rely on you. I was hoping you would upload your valued opinions. When I saw the vid, before I watched it, I guessed that you would be honest and above all optimistic and you didn't disappoint. Others are so busy moaning that I was yet to get any useful feedback 😆 Love to hear the ground effect and the overall handling is very promising from a very early stage. Love that you consider VR to be improved too. I just need to get it to work reliably for long enough to see for myself - haven't got ot to work properly yet. Thanks for your opinions...
I have been so confused with all the negative content surrounding the sim. Once the launch issues were resolved and I was able to get in the sim, I've been very pleased. There are some flight model issues with the Asobo planes, and some slightly annoying bugs in the career mode, but all-in-all it has been a great experience. I haven't flown any rotary wing yet, but it's good to hear that the flight model is showing improvements on that side of things. The default 3rd party fixed-wings that I've flown have been excellent so far. My only complaint is the seeming lack of friction on the Asobo planes, but that's quite minor!
Lovely to see a video focusing on the good stuff :) I knew I could count on you for it! Now I just need to set up my brand new virpil collective and dampened rudder pedals so I can dive into some 2024 heli flying!
Yeah thanks for this video. I couldn't have said it as well as you did. But innovation, risk, reward do not come for free...they are hard. Apparently real world pilots are better prepared mentally to deal with a situation were they really want to fly their new sim, but the situation says no flying today. Also thanks for the first evaluation of the R66....as a non pilot I like to listen to the opinions of professionals.
@@MagnusThornberg yeah, the sounds took me right back to the cockpit. I did turbine transition in the R66. The default FS24 version is as good as the Cowansim version with the sound mod
@ I was suprised when I heard the blade slap. I didn’t know that the r66 hade that. Actually sounds better then the Huey I think. I’m looking forward to more reviews from you when you tried the other helicopters. And all the missions rescue and sling missions. I tried the Eriksson sky crane in free flight and it didn’t feel good att all. The good thing was it felt very heavy compared tho the r66 so they nailed that in msfs 2024. But what do I know😄never had any experience in a real aircraft lol
Appreciate your input. With all the new terrain-level enhancements and improved flight dynamics I’ve already been eager to practice more with helicopters.
@ Enjoying it so far! They are definitely challenging to learn. I’m glad Asobo placed more of an importance on helicopters and other types of aircraft with 2024. Lots to discover out there.
I also had major issue yawing in MSFS2020. It was unplayable. Until I bumped up my "Off Screen Terrain pre-caching" to ULTRA. Maybe you already knew this, sorry if that is the case. I always set settings to Medium sometimes low and therefore "off screen terrain pre-caching" was also set to Medium or Low and the stutter was woeful. Then after many hours/days of frustration I tried maxing out that one setting and it immediately fixed all the yaw stuttering. I only have an older system to: (9600k,32GB, 2080ti) and I can actually run MSFS2020 in VR smoothly on Medium settings with HP-Reverb at full resolution.
So I downloaded 2020, and now 2024. I use VR and have 200ish hours total now. I use the Apache Simulators r44 setup. The reason I go it was to learn to hover and most basic heli controls before doing my IRL license, hopefully to save time with learning to hover and keep my license close to 40hr as possible. Good idea? Suggestions on what to do/learn/practice?
@@canyonrunner331 you’re probably not going to learn how to hover from the sim alone. It’s good, but there is nothing like the real aircraft. You will benefit the most from cockpit familiarization. If you are serious about getting your real world license, start training with an instructor first. Then re-run through the lessons on the sim. That way you aren’t learning bad habits that will cost you more time to unlearn. This is the way I did it and it saved me a lot of money by time in the aircraft. I passed my private checkride at 49 hours. Average for helicopters is 80 hours.
I’m sooo glad that I came across your video!! I have bought and installed MSFS 2024 but then this flood of negative reviews kept coming in so I could not get myself to even try to start the game because it would certainly end up in tears with a tweak to fly ratio above 50:1. But obviously it is really good fun “out of the box”. So thanks a ton for the reality check! What really surprises me is that you say the VR experience is good. There are quite a few tests out there showing that VR performance is substantially worse than MSFS 2020 (on a 4090 system). I understand that you use a Varjo Aero, same here. Would you mind sharing your settings? That would be awesome!
Sounds like I need to do a quick settings video. I have had quite a few people ask the same question. Look into Process Lasso to improve overall pc performance. My VR graphics settings are basically the ‘high end’ preset.
I'm currently working on my rotary add-on and can attest to the better realism in the base helicopters. I use a Pro Flight Trainer - PUMA X2 B-Style mounted to a Next Level Racing Boeing commercial edition cockpit with a Butt Kicker installed. For visuals, I'm using a Quest 3. No motion yet, but I'm working on it. I was able to improve my hover between lessons using this setup with FS2020 and what I've flown in 2024 has been much more fluid and precise. I'm not getting all the stutters and such I was getting before, so my flights are WAY more enjoyable and productive.
Some of the things that I bought in the MSFS20 market place have been brought forward already but some things have not. One of those is the Cowansim R-66 which is a fantastic aircraft in its own right, however I did move the Cowansim Bell 222B and the Taog's Hangar Bell UH-1/205A-1 from my MSFS20 community folder and both perform excellently in MSFS24. The only aircraft I moved that doesn't work is the new OH-58D from TacFlight, which is ok since it wasn't made for MSFS24 in the first place. The other two things I moved were my KTPA and KPCM sceneries from Verticalsim and both work quite well, though with KTPA there are a couple of place where grass shows through the taxi way, and the Joliet bridge textures are not showing and a couple of place there are road cones about 70ft in the air, but nothing that I can't live with for the time being and they are still both ~way better than the default airports.
100% agree with what you say. After the first evening, the new sim has actually been working quite well for me. Love the new default helicopters, will be challenging for 3rd party developers to deliver even better models.
I fly VR exclusively. Flown to the CPL checkride on the G2 and my first paying passenger for a sightseeing adventure around Montreal. MSFS2024 is awesome in VR and these flights felt so immersive. I agree with you, VR performance seems improved out-of-the-box! This will become a great platform for helos payware add-ons! I flew the R22 from CS with no problems.
@ I can answer that right now - broken currently. I thought I'd give them a go (although I'm just about competent already) and the first one goes fine until you start then engine, then the script goes awry. The second asks you to look at mountains ... and doesn't move on from there. Not tried any others yet. I'm sure they will be fine eventually, but not yet.
Great video! Love the area too, need to do a flight around there! Launch aside so far im really enjoying the sim and have a new GPU on the way so I can pump up my VR visuals.
@ yep I agree. I’m loving career mode so far, just did the PPL and building hours. Been flying in FS since FS3 and the career mode is a long overdue option. I think it even adds more longevity by making you unlock those different jobs/missions through progression (btw I think the crop spray only works on missions too, though haven’t looked into it too much yet).
Thanks for the vid, brother! I enjoy the new flight model so much, and by the way yesterday all of my aircraft purchased in the Marketplace got delivered - except the R22 😂
i've been flying MSFS 2024 in VR and been really loving it... i love the helicopters BUT i've fallen in love with the JOBY eVTOL... that is the FUTURE of aviation IMO.

i found the same experience. it was easier to find smooth settings in VR and i could feel the differences in how the aircraft handled in both heli and planes. I have a stupid-fast fiberoptic connection which i think also helps.
I have been blown away with the helicopters in this one, I refused to buy any more helicopers in 2020 because they all were terrible because the sim simply could not do it, you had to go with the one developer with its own external FM, and they where great... not even HPG managed to get their helicopters to behave and feel good. But now in 2024 really feels proper...smooth fluid inputs and you dont feel like things are fighting you or not responding, it does what you expect... I had some issues with headtracking and what not but the helicopters them selfs was great. R66 just sounds so good, worth if for that alone, that blade slap is amazing! H125 is really nice as well, and this is just the beginning, cant wait till H145 and H160 and all that get set up for this new sim properly... and all the Cowansim models and the Aoulette III, Llama and all that... exciting times! Lots of us in DCS who have tried this said... this is as good as the best helicopters in DCS or atleast very close... I was so mad that helicopters was an after thought in 2020... so this is nice.
Hi thanks for the honest review! if you compare the flight model of the H125 between XP12 and MSFS 2024 which feels closer to the real life flight model?
@@SurftheAlps-f6c perception is relative to realism. A lot can be made up for with immersion. XPlane has been riding the ‘Superior FM’ myth for a while. This new sim might finally put it to rest. LR should be worried.
@@Belatu42 So you intimate that less than ideal flight model can be overcome with better eye candy? Has or will MSFS ever been certified for flight training by the FAA? I say this in response to your claim that the superior flight model of Xplane is somehow a "myth". So the FAA believes in myths? I will admit your demo video looks much better than the terrible behavior in 2020 that I have seen. I remain skeptical, but I'm open to the possibility regards accurate flight modeling by microsloth. But up until now, the comparison between Xplane and 2020 is like having a real Porsche 911 that has faded paint and some dents and scratches for Xplane, vs having a pristine fiberglass body of a 911 on top of an old VW beetle chassis. One looks great but cannot ever handle like the real Porsche chassis.
@ I disagree with your assessment of the flight models and that is why I say ‘myth’. XPlane did have a superior fm at one point, but the gap has been closed between the major platforms and it’s really down to how a developer implements an individual aircraft. The free OH6A for DCS is hands down the best replication of how a helicopter flies that I’ve come across. That doesn’t mean the other sims aren’t good. The FAA cares more about direct hardware function when certifying Flight Training Devices. It’s never been about the flight modeling. It’s always been about the systems. I have flown certified FTD and logged time towards my ratings. The FM’s aren’t anything special.
would you mind doing a rundown of your settings and equipment for VR? I have a 4080super + i9 14900k with 64 gb ram and i just caaaan't for the life of my find a good spot for the settings and how to launch it best...

@Belatu42 it's not bad but it's got that basic Asobo quality, the rotor effects are linear and always playing in the background sometimes louder based on your acceleration but don't really represent your RPM or flight conditions. Flying the R66 you can actually hear your rotor RPM and the difference in pitch during sharp maneuvers. i guess it's nitpicking but those small details really help with immersion and can really enhance your awareness flying a virtual helicopter
@@simpo5958 I’ve only flown the H125 once so far. I’ll pay more attention, but the real thing doesn’t have a ton of engine note variation. The FADEC management is really good. I thought the rotor flutter was pretty spot on.
There is still oddness with inflow around object models. But this is also the case in real helicopter flying. Come down on the landing spot from above, not across the edge of the platform.

Still no basic Flyby view lol! Despite being requested a million times. I cant really see much of an improvement, maybe its the low res 1080p video, but this looks basically like MSFS 2020 with new trees. This video looks very low FPS, clanky and jerky. Not smooth at all. Looking at your PC that looks top notch, so am guessing its RUclips's video streaming. Am a bit worried about Asobo/Microsoft's new 'cloud' technology servers which are a bit hit and miss, as you are now forced now to download most of the textures on the go, so you will need huge bandwidth at your end, and a lot of luck who is flying on MSFS2024 the same time as yourself for their servers to be able to deliver. At least with MSFS 2020 we could manually cache areas with high photogrammetry, and get half decent frame rates and reasonable smoothness most times. MSFS 2024 seems a big step backwards. I would rather of downloaded more content and had less dependency on their cloud streaming service. Despite their many promises, Asobo and Microsoft seemed to have dropped the ball with this 2024 version. Nothing here couldn't of been achieved with addons and mission generators. Semms more like a cash grab than anything else. But we will find out in the months to come. I Will wait a year and see how this pans out. Cheers anyway for the video upload. You did a fine job flying the R66.
I completely disagree. The video quality is low because it’s a cropped view of one eye of the VR mirror. The view jitteriness is the VR tracking. It’s smooth in game. The scenery and flight model is a big step up from 2020. There is still plenty of room for 3rd party development though
Is there an option somewhere like dcs where you can select non spring centered joysticks , i flew the Bell in Sedona and I was just blown away by the graphics , but something seemed off on tail rotor axis , are you using assist on cyclic and tail rotor ? I’ll have to play with the adjustments , thx for the great video !
No assists. I have pedals for tail rotor/rudder control. There isn’t an option like DCS for joystick spring type. Trim doesn’t work the same way in MSFS. What joystick are you using?
@ modified saitek x45 springs removed added clamps to axis plastic bearings so stick stays put and rocker rudder axis same thing no spring stays where I move it
‘24 is definitely an upgrade over ‘20. It’s hard to pick a most realistic FM. The OH6A for DCS is really good. I’m also really liking the R66 in MSFS24

Thanks so much for your video, very informative and much appreciated I have no previous flight experience (sim or real ) but I am about to buy a motion platform ( P6 DoF reality flight) and Microsoft flight simulator 2024 . What bindings are used for the Robinson ingame? I've swapped between rudder and anti torque, I don't think msfs knows the difference maybe? Collective and throttle axis are messing with eachother for me, and propeller axis is used for power, but something is conflicting and watching my power cycle from 40% to 98% and back at an insane speed, like glitching between the two and if I adjust collective it drops to 0% then begins gltiching again as if multiple keys are bound but I'm not finding any conflicting bindings.
@@demdirtyboyz247 there are separate assignments for helicopter throttle, collective and cyclic. You should use the tail rotor axis assignment, not rudder. It sounds like your bindings are causing control conflicts
@Belatu42 yeah, I'm using tail rotor but somethings wrong with throttle and collective and propeller assignment. I don't know why, I've tried one, or two or all three on and off and I can not figure it out. It's the only helo I can't figure out. Which bindings do you have exactly and which for what. I have collective to my collective, I currently I have propeller as my throttle, because my throttle doubles as a collective but inverted, and my foot pedals to tail rotor laxis.
@ you should have the throttle set to “set helicopter throttle axis” Collective to “collective axis” Tail rotor to “tail rotor axis” Cyclic X-axis to “set cyclic lateral axis” Cyclic y-axis to “set cyclic longitudinal axis” You should not have anything assigned to propeller axis for helicopters Edit: you should probably also have the ‘governor on’ and ‘governor off’ assigned as well. Make sure the governor is on before you lift off
@Belatu42 that's how I have it, but didn't have govener bound, I'll try again other wise I have a controller uncalibrated as throttle works my collective up and down and throttle inverted at the same time and conflicts my collective as a normal collective. Maybe my windows calibration on my puma is messed up 🤔

I 100% agree with your take on it, I also think it's a good step in the right direction. Yes the launch was a rough one but I have seen many a rough launches, GPU's were crazy at one point. With that said though it looks like The team at MSFS have been working hard at cleaning things up, it is what it is. I have had a chance to fly in the sim and yes your right about how the physics feel, I can feel it too and yes it looks so much more real out the cockpit window. I too am a real world pilot and first thing I thought was, now that is how it looks when I go flying. The sim looks great, now we just got to give them some time to start cleaning it up. Change always takes some getting use too, I'm just glad there is someone out there trying to give us a better sim in the first place. Microsoft brought new life back into this genre, so we need to cut them a little slack because we had nothing for a long time for those old enough to remember. Give it a chance people, you may be glad you did. It will get better and better just like the old sim did. Take a deep breath everybody lol. Cheers!
Great video. I’m willing to bet you know what it’s like to wait a very long time to for a game or console to come out, that had 1 or 2 buttons and a D pad. I spent 2 days reprogramming controls that kept getting deleted or corrupted, but I loved every minute of it. Because I’m old enough to know how unbelievably Awesome this game is.
Thanks for the review. Don't know what to think -- reviews and subjective experiences are all over the place. Sounds like if it works, it's awesome, but many if not most can't get it to work very well if at all.

Thanks for the vid and your thoughts which coming from a real world perspective are very encouraging. I have subbed and look forward to more of your content in future. I do have a couple of queries on the control systems. Number one issue is that I have not been able to get any trimming function working in the R66 but it looks like you have so I would appreciate knowing what you are using for trim. Along the same lines the Trim Reset function also does not work for me either. In regards to the throttle I find that when I pull collective the throttle grip is moving as well which is weird because I don't have anything bound to the throttle control for the R66. I expect that the throttle is set to 100% and then it would not move again until shutdown. If you or anyone else has thoughts on these issues I would certainly love to hear them. Thanks and keep up the good work Buddy
@@badenbr1 I’m using a Moza AB9 1:1 FFB joystick. I’m not using trim at all in the sim. I would recommend a Pro-Flight Trainer Puma X. For the throttle, that movement is normal. The real thing is directly connected to the governor by an electric actuator. It moves in your hand as the governor adjusts the throttle based on torque requirements. Spool up to full throttle turn on the governor and forget about it ;)
@@Belatu42 Thanks for the feedback, I actually use the TM Warthog stick and throttle quadrant which has been good for me over the years primarily flying helicopters in DCS and to a much less degree in MSFS. Hope that one day the flight models MSFS achieve the same level of refinement as the DCS modules but I suspect it may be a long time coming. Thanks also for explaining the way the Robinson throttle works which now makes a bit more sense. I have submitted a ticket to the MSFS support forum regarding the trim problem and hopefully they will be able to shed some light on that because flying without functioning trim for me is a little tedious. Heading off to check out some more of your vids..
@@badenbr1 do you have the spring removed and use an extension for helicopters with the TH Warthog? That would be close to a 1:1 throw and you really wouldn’t need trim. In the real thing trim alleviates the force pushing against you, it doesn’t move the stick back to the center. That’s a purely sim thing. I put the FMs of the top 3 on par with my real world experience. DCS, XP12 and now MSFS24
Good vid. But personally having a terrible time with it still haven’t been able to fly in 2024. Day 3 off running the gauntlet of 97% bug, then if i get to the menu everything seems ok till you click fly know and just loads things in and out, I’ve left it doing this a far few times over an hour. This is on a top notch system with over 1000mbs fibre connection. To myself it’s been a massive failure and makes 2020 look 100%stable / reliable in comparison. I hope it improves but definitely showing the serious issues of a streamed service. I have zero clue why they don’t give an option to pre download the part / world for those who can or don’t mind a slower load in. Also the fact offline its not usable?, I struggle to sympathise with msf they should of sorted the servers due they should of been aware of the demand from pre orders alone and the fact they should of been aware of how critical the servers are. It seems like one part of the community seem to be using it ok, the others having massive issues, its day 3 and still effectively not working personally my patience is running thin. I’d rate this as not ready for release. Don’t get me wrong i was fully expecting issues on day one. But for a AAA rated title its shocking if this carry’s on to day 7 i will demand a refund a return to x-plane and 2020. To myself this is a product still in Alpha or Bata stage. I think also if they stagerd the release over a week to gradually build and stress the servers that may of improved it a bit.
After discovering DCS World years ago, I began to treat MSFS as a glorified Google Earth Simulator. The world in MSFS lacks any danger due to the lack of damage model. In DCS, you can damage a tire or hear a "pop" when landing too hard. You have to naturally look before taking off or landing on multiplayer servers, not to crash into other players. This creates tension, realism and evokes a sense of danger without using weapons. In flight engine relights , ripping your wings off, not being able to jettison external fuel tank due to damage, etc. None of this exists in MSFS. I can't see myself buying this one, unless it's on sale, for the only purpose of flying over my next vacation destination. Races without collision , really? It's like playing Forza or Gran Turismo on line races in time trial only.
@@NoRegret08 there is collision. I definitely crashed in the video. There’s just no modeled destruction. I will forever use all sims and try not to overlook the benefits of one even when some areas are distinctly different. I'm seeing a few reports from actual pilots saying many things have improved. Server issues and glitches can be fixed. People not noticing improvements are missing the subtle stuff, I agree. I think this looks really promising.

Thanks for this.

Yeah, I did the same thing in 2020. The pre-caching made a difference but didn’t eliminate it completely

What does "loaded" and "unloaded" mean for a semi-rigid rotor system?
@@RotatingBombWithADogOnIt unloading means I took the weight of the helicopter off of the disk. Negative G’s. That leads to mast bumping in 2-blades teetering systems like the R66.
@@Belatu42 Thanks. I first heard about unloading and loading during a mast bump video published by the U.S Army regarding semi-rigid/two-bladed rotor systems.
I still can't visualize taking the weight of the helicopter off of the disk. Does that mean you didn't apply proper collective and/or cyclic to support the flight?
@@RotatingBombWithADogOnIt yes. That is pretty much what I did. I dropped the collective too quickly when I was on an upward trajectory. That leaves the rotor to go wherever it wants and that is never a good thing. It usually hits the tail boom. Negative G’s are bad in Robinsons.

I have no previous flight experience (sim or real ) but I am about to buy a motion platform ( P6 DoF reality flight) and Microsoft flight simulator 2024 .

I have all my life wanted to fly a helicopter and I know I am going to spend many, many hours in the cockpit ( and that will probably be just learning to hover 🥵😋😁 ) .
I am just curious ( as a pilot and my newest friend 🙏🤭) what joystick you would recommend between The Pro Flight Trainer PUMA X ( AU$2300 ) and the Moza AB9 FFB Force Feedback Base coupled with the MH16 Flightstick ( AU $1300) .

@ you should have the throttle set to “set helicopter throttle axis”
Collective to “collective axis”
Tail rotor to “tail rotor axis”
Cyclic X-axis to “set cyclic lateral axis”
Cyclic y-axis to “set cyclic longitudinal axis”
You should not have anything assigned to propeller axis for helicopters
Edit: you should probably also have the ‘governor on’ and ‘governor off’ assigned as well.
