Keep in mind that this is a TECHNICAL ALPHA which is intentionally/heavily stripped down so they can test the servers. There are many locations in this Alpha which look a million times worse than the build MSFS creators got to play a month ago (mainly with many models reverting to or overlapping with 2020 models). The game is also still in its last stages of development. For people which think this could've been a little update, keep in mind that this new version has a shitload of huge improvements, features, and content. Just keep that in mind, wait 'til launch.

The sun's position, distance from earth, and time of year all play a role in how the human eye and camera retinas capture color. Only reason we don't notice a difference is because we've been living with it for so long that it becomes a background detail.

To be honest, I was expecting a lot more from the autogen and AI-placed objects. Aside from the beautiful lighting in FS2024, they’re pretty similar when you compare areas outside the showcase regions where MS/Asobo put in real human work.

@@delofordCurrently it’s way too far the other direction, much too washed out and monochrome. A good gauge on these things is usually google street view. Their images are notoriously unsaturated and flat. Look at US-89 heading towards Page, Arizona, there are dark red bands in the bluffs that are clearly too washed out in the exact same location in the sim: maps.app.goo.gl/QG2aSMXCExhdVdJk8?g_st=ic I’ve also personally flown light aircraft all over northern Arizona and Utah irl and the 2024 footage just isn’t what it looks like. The impression I got from the footage is of someone who decided to fly at high noon in July after having their eyes dilated at the optometrist. Yes, the 2020 footage is too saturated and red overall, but if the sim is going to get it “wrong,” that’s the direction I’d like it to be in.
Great stuff. Many of the changes are quite subtle (testament to how good FS2020 is / was), but add up to what looks like a much more immersive experience for bush flying. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it - if my PC is up to the task!
It wasn't the massive change i was expecting. Firstly those 2020 graphics seem a bit low, maybe not.....but was it done in same seasons? as colours are so different it's hard to judge. Yes seems sharper overall but it's not like FSX to 2020. Tree shadows are great. I suppose when it's being made to run on a console...how complex can it actually be. I will upgrade when all the glitches and updates have smoothed out.....Thanks for video
Am I the only one that really don't like the color of the texture for the Grand Canyon? It's almost like snow instead of yellowish gravel. Other than that, it's not as dramatic as when 2020 arrived but there are definitely some visual improvements in 2024. Can't wait to try it personally

I'm a photographer in northern Arizona, specilaizing in the Grand Canyon, and I drive through the area several times a year at different times of day. I can confirm that the colors are way off. I agree that it almost looked like snow.

Unbelievable! I find it exciting that in 2020 I thought, ok, what do you want to improve now? And today I think “Wow, the 2020 is old”. The cockpits also look much better. The highlights on the plastic surfaces in the cockpit alone!
Above all, I like that they'll be updating things on the cloud rather than on my PC. In 2020, it seems every time they roll out an update, they break something new that I'm left spending a good deal of time resolving. For instance, currently my nose wheel randomly stopped working even though none of the bindings changed. Hopefully, in 2024 I can now spend more time flying and less time troubleshooting. Although, I won't hold my breath.
plus: for the side by side comparison minus: for the blac border desert scenes: i find the 2020 scenery better in regards to the brown sand color. the new one looks too bright and washed out for me.

The anlge of the sun changes the color of the land we see though our own eyes at any particular time of day, particularly sunrise and sunset. Flight sim can only change the color of the sky, not the ground unfortunately.
While there's no doubt in my mind that 2024 is absolutely amazing graphics-wise I still feel as if in the first part of the comparison 2020 has "too much colour" while 2024 is "too white" and colourwise in that area I think it'd be perfect somewhere in between...
A mixed bag here. Better detail in 2024, better shadows, better night scenes, and better lighting. But I preferred the desert colours in 2020, and the snow in 2024 looks overly detailed like those late 90s games that over-used bump mapping.

Has MSFS added the cloud effects on wings? In real life, while flying through thick clouds, sometimes you can barely see the wings and/or wingtips from inside the aircraft. This cloud effect on the wings is something MSFS never created, and yet it's one of the most basic effects. While landing at night and in low visibility, do the landing lights light up the clouds or area around the aircraft, like in real life?
MSFS-2024 has definitely more detail, better lighting/shadowing, more realistic ground colors and possibly accuracy and photogrametry but MSFS-2020 has better overall color blending and a warmth that lacks in 2024. It just feels better to my eyes although it lacks the detail level of 2024. Since my hardware is from around ~2018, and since there is no money for upgrade(s) in the foreseeable future I am staying with 2020. The fps drop at certain segments in this video is clearly noticeable and in favor of 2020. The graphical improvements, although evident, do not justify (again imho) the change ie increase in hardware requirements.
I mean they both look pretty damn good, let’s be honest. But the somewhat better looking FS2024 is scenery streaming, which is cloud gaming like GEForce Now. Yeah I’m in Australia so obviously my internet won’t be fast enough to avoid all the lag, freezes and jank that brings. I’ll stay with FS2020 thanks.
Every time I see the night lights.. they keep trying but looks awful.. that and .. are those cars? Yeah still pictures with cars on the road.. just looks tacky..I love Xplane cars and trains. But man does it look really good!

The Alpha didn't have the ground update, so no grass, no rocks, no cultivated fields.

Looks like 2020 is using a Warm filter, and 2024 is using a Cool filter (maybe a little too much) not sure.

they broke ties with Blackshark Ai who did the autogen. so it's still being reworked I heard

The 2020 desert textures are "Prettier" but 2024 textures are true to reality.

We got a "game" with a high quality, detailed "whole earth map" AND decent performance before GTA 7, heck, even before GTA 6.

The 2024 has more details than the 2020 version but the 2020 version seems to run smoother than the latest version...
MSFS 24 Grand Canyon looks very whitewashed.
