I wouldn’t base a magic system on your cultures because they’re not mine and grossly misunderstood but just having native people exist and affect the story would be nice, if you know of some books or websites I can browse. I’m in the Pacific Northwest so if there’s somewhere I can go as well… ❤

I'm only in the acknowledgments section, so more thoughts may arise as we move through the story, but something that immediately raises alarm bells for me is the way the author talks about representing "the Native culture." What culture? Despite some shared ways of understanding the world, my tribe has very different customs, language, socio-political structures, spiritual practices, etc than other tribes. I can tell that the author is well-meaning & I appreciate her taking responsibility, but this idea of "Pan-Indigeneity" can really hinder Native efforts to be seen, understood, and supported. (was happy to see this video pop up in my feed! I hope you're taking care of yourself and finding your way out of the nightmare guilt spiral 🖤 I think all too many of us have been there before & understand your need to step back)
I had this same thought. Like the blanket language was strange. Representing native culture... which ones? I also had a thought further along in the book that its strange that the fae are still somewhat the "villains" of this story with Tinkerbell being the resurrected, abusive, awful evil queen of the fae. Technically I guess all of the characters are villains in their own way but Tink was the "final boss" of the story which seems to go against wanting to redo the Native rep in a more respectful way. Like the idea was good in theory but could've been executed better (which could also be said about everything in the series) Thank you for this comment and the kind words

Okay it has been a few hours and I have ✨️thoughts✨️ It feels like many of these readers (and writers) grew up with their main access to interesting, readable 'literature' coming from fanfic. So much of the stylized writing and plot coming from dark romance screams early 2010s fandom smut. Making the female protagonist into the biggest Mary Sue - do we even know Winnie'd hair color? Or eye color? Or literally any description that confirms she isn't a body-safe silicone replica of a Darling with low grade sentience? The story had an interesting foundation, but holy fuck it need several more drafts and a copyeditor.
'Next rant review: Flames of Chaos...' Hearing that title damn near gave me war flashbacks. It's the first (and so far only) time I've ever DNF'd a book. You are so much stronger than I am!
I don't like that the group that represents indigenous people are called fae. The fae come from European folklore and using the term for a group written to represent indigenous North Americans feels icky.

In my experience, if you're going for X and vibes and the vibes are /working/ some of the worldbuilding/background starts to form out of that. If you have no ideas to fill out the in-between bits, you probably need another edit JUST for tone and mood. Sometimes small details don't get followed up, especially if you don't have a whole series 100% done before you start publishing, but if it's good generally that doesn't get counted against you so much. Self-published doesn't have to mean poorly/unedited!

Had to join the Patreon just to see this early. This was the one book I didn’t read when I had the series on Kindle Unlimited because I got so tired: of the oxygen sandwich of a plot, Winnie sexually harassing Vane when he didn’t want her, the repetitive as fuck sex scenes (some sex toys would’ve gone a long way) and the poorly written cishet characters. It’s such a blessing that I found this channel. 💖

This was the one book I didn’t read when I had the series on Kindle Unlimited because I got so tired: of the oxygen sandwich of a plot, Winnie sexually harassing Vane when he didn’t want her, the repetitive as fuck sex scenes (some sex toys would’ve gone a long way) and the poorly written cishet characters. It’s such a blessing that I found this channel. 💖

So, I just through the recap and seeing all the covers again, and I'm curious why the first book has a skull, the second book has an eye in the skull, the third one has half a face/ half skull . . . Why does the fourth one look more skeletal again? I understand that logic is thin on the ground in this series, but I thought it was clearly leading to a human face in the end. I guess I expected too much.
