A bit of history. For a couple of centuries it was usual for sons of upper-middle class families to follow a common pattern: the eldest would inherit the estate, others would enter the navy or army, and others would enter the Church of England. This latter would bring with it a home and a relatively stress-free life. Such vicars (etc.) often took on intense hobbies - writers, poets, artists, scientists of all sorts. William Buckland is an example, as might have been Charles Darwin, except that history intervened and he never became a vicar.

my favorite response to the mouse trap problem is the pitcher plant, nature already did it, and the way it evolved is pretty well known, but the way nature does things is significantly different from the way engineers do things. the pitcher plant evolved since it could live and survive without the ability to catch prey, then evolved it as a secondary source of nutrients, and since became dependent on it, allowing it to survive in it's niche of low nutrient soil. this is actually very similar to the evolution of sex that was mentioned earlier, since there's a period where transitional species can do both sexual and asexual reproduction.

Very little of the "science" I was taught in school has turned out to be accurate in the light of further discovery and research. From feathered dinosaurs to the complete debunking of the theory of race by modern genetics to how the electrical fields of eukaryotic cells work, modern scientific results are much more dependable, much more evidence based, and much less crude than what we were taught. There are still way too many assumptions in most scientific fields, but eventually the false assumptions will be replaced by actual facts and the assumptions that turn out to be true will be backed by valid evidence.
So yes, regularly check what you think you know - some of it will turn out to be false, supplanted by better and more careful research results.

I hope you meant to say that it is now informed by 'more evidence' instead of 'more evidence based' which is not the same thing at all.

Graduated with degree in nuclear engineering. It's astounding to see the creationist skepticism surrounding radioactive decay and radiometric dating. The nuclear power plants I worked at could not have operated unless radioactive decay mechanism were thoroughly understood and predictable with mathematical models. This spills over to medical radiation therapies, atomic bombs, nuclear submarines, simple smoke detectors, and many other areas where radioactive isotopes are used to our benefit, including the benefit of creationists. We live in an odd world.

My natural environment: A hospital, my bed in my home.
I don't seem to do so well outside either of these environments. I'm told that if I try to get anyone to take me somewhere else, I will die. It doesn't keep me from wishing. But holding a kitten is as much of a dream as coming face to face with an australopithecine. Both would be wonderful, and neither will ever happen. Still, I love life, and find it well worth living. I would also like to go to college and study one of the wealth of subjects they have to offer. That is also a dream, but I can try to learn as much as I can, by reading, and by learning from people who have had the fortune to study at university, such as Erika, the Gutsick Gibbon. I don't know that I understand it all, or even a reasonable tiny amount. But I'm trying. I know it makes a lot more sense than most of the world's religions do. Even the hospital holy men don't want anything to do with you if you don't have money, are not related to someone living who has money, and if a lot of your biology doesn't match up with what their ancient books tell them. That's the diference between the holy men and the men of science. That I don't match up with how their books say a person should be is makes me of great interest to them. They want to figure me out biologically, while the holy men just want to ignore my existance.
