- This is my M1 Max Desk Setup where I get work done. In the video I feature the M1 Max 14 inch MacBook Pro along with two of my desks, one from Husky and the other is a DIY IKEA desk setup that I’ve been using in my workflow for a couple of years now. I’ve spent many hours dialing in my productivity while carefully curating each piece. I very much treat this like a small business, so the investments I’m making continue to evolve with my work.

Thank you for posting.. will check out the Husky desks. My studio monitors are JBL 308’s XLR fed from Peavy USB to XLR from Mac Mini M1. (Yes finally got one.. now waiting for Mini M1 Pro or Max next year, but it’s doing so much better for my BRAW footage than my 2014 MBP). Older 24” Dell Ultrasharp 4K monitor (meh.. ok I guess?). Vizio 42” 4K tv? Just recently got a Netgear Canvas Photoframe for displaying stills or 1080p video from my projects. Got it on sale.. pretty nice.. though my internet is from ipad hotspot, which is annoying with 3rd party devices that don’t automatically rejoin after you leave/return with ipad and cycle the hotspot.. yes... a dedicated remote and sd card would be handier in this setup.. though maybe decent internet will come to the country area in 2022 then get network router working and no longer need to deal with wifi hotspot issues. Slowlying setting up rest of system and work space. Mirror raid boxes from OWC and WD Ultra Star HDD’s (WD bought out the better Hitachi Ultra Star’s.. they seem to be unchanged from before... ). Anyway I find having a clean office environment makes for less stressful working. Right now it’s a disaster.. saved a feral kitty injured (tail amputee from vehicle strike) and he wants to get into everything, but is calming down.. though he does like to hide my keys, usb sticks etc in his toy area under the bed.
Always a work in progress. And definitely a little trickier with a new kitty.
My dogs end up coming into the studio when I’m working and it makes it challenging when I’m filming B-Roll and moving things around.
I’ve got an all in one stand setup for my a-cam I move around and then that Husky table and they’re confused as to why I keep moving furniture several times a day 🤷♂️
I do love that Husky table though. Very sturdy.
Alright you beautiful humans, I figured I needed to separate this from a full studio update since there will be a lot to cover when that happens. What are some pieces in your workflow now, and/or that you have your eye on for your setup?
a nice keyboard, and i love pitaka stand for ipad .
The magnetic stand is super useful 😉
I’m doing a whole “bedroom studio” upgrade, and really appreciate the depth of your videos on Mac (and all your vids ) peripherals, etc.
After watching your vids, I think I’m going to do an external NVME enclosure.
Current upgrades for the setup:
Buso audio artist 88 studio desk
Mac Studio Max (just ordered)
New audio interface
ISO Acoustics speaker stands
DeltaHub desk mat and Carpio 2.0
Ben Q ScreenBar Halo
Logitech MX 3 (since I saw it on your desk)
Magic Track pad
Not sure on the keyboard yet
Now I have my eyes on that sweet Grovemade headphone stand you have .
Thanks again for the excellent channel !
Hey, that’s fantastic. I always love hearing from the community on what they’re working on. It takes time my friend, but small steps forward is still progress.
That sounds like a great setup you’re going to have there.
Saving this instantly. One of the cleanest stations (and tours) i’ve seen.
Many thanks friend. I try to keep it as simple as I can, but of course that’s what the cabinets are for 😁
Appreciate you 🤙
3:23 😂 Keanu approved manliness!
Awesome, right? My friend was carrying a ton of these stickers around. I had to have a few. 😉
Nice seeing the tool boxes, thats my plan when i build my office, two tool boxes on the sides to hold up my countertop for desk.
Oh that’s going to be sweet! I love tool boxes. Just so satisfying.
Loving the chilled vibe on this one Kevin, excellent production quality here as always!
Many thanks brother. This one was on another level and I could have still done so much more, but I was (honestly) exhausted. This was one of those times where you say, “you can’t have too much B-Roll.”
Love the video and the setup.. I just wondering if you do use a chair on your main desk(Ikea)?? And if not do you recommend any?? As I’m looking to have a similar setup and I want to be able to use it as stand/sitting desk🙏
I don’t use a chair aside from the standing stool, however have you looked at drafting chairs? I have had my eye on the Hag Capisco chair…but there are several drafting chair options.
Beautiful setup, Kevin. Very clean and functional!
Thank you thank you 🙏
Love the Set Up, I am still working on my set-up a bit, I am build a new pc at the moment as well. Wait
was that Keanu Reeves LOL
Nice on the PC build. And yes! That was him indeed. I have a friend who works in a company that makes stickers exclusively. She just happened to have a few with her.
Keanu in the drawer! Nice setup!
Ha! Yeah, I have a good friend that works for a sticker company and she had these in her bag. She knew they’d find the perfect home. 😉
Many thanks. 🤙🤘
I don’t think I’ve seen a stool like that. Also, that monitor arm is dope!
It’s a pretty interesting stool. I forgot to show the bottom of it, but did show it in my other desk setup video. And yeah, the monitor arm was such a find.
But how about those wallpapers!? 😉🤙
Well done my friend, so good to see another video. Always inspiring :) I hope all is well with you!
Doing great my friend, and I hope you are as well. 👊🤘
Where's the orange wallpaper from?
Link in the description. Visionary Watts 🤙
The link should be updated to the particular post…how about now?
Very nice setup Kevin!
I appreciate you saying so. It’s been a work in progress.
Good stuff @Kevin Ross! I have the room to do it, not an issue, but what do you think about the 62" Husky table. Do you think it is TOO long or do you think the extra real estate will be good to have even if you keep your work space area minimized? Like the industrial look of the table too and the great price. One more thing, is that cross support at the bottom of the legs adjustable? On web it shows it in the middle and thats a no-go. Can you move that cross member to the wall side like you have or whats the deal with that?
So I definitely would have gotten the longer table, but I knew exactly what I needed for my particular setup and the 62 was going to be a little long. It would fit, but I also knew I’d be moving it often, which I do.
I’ll update the description and completely forgot to add this piece of context. The crossbar can be added to the back/front (however you look at it) so that you can sit underneath and also push a chair under it, but there’s a crossbar on the top as well that runs down the middle of it (length wise) that drops down two inches, but seeing as it’s adjustable and my chair is adjustable, I’ve never had an issue with bumping into that top crossbar.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks Kevin. Excellent heads up on the other cross member under the table itself! I was planning on adding two of those pullout vented drawers you show in the video, but it sounds like those wont work on THIS table, or will it? Dang, I really wanted those drawers to make this the perfect deal for me.
Ah yes, another good point on the drawer. Darn it.
So the crossbar is there because that’s connected to the crank. 🤔
Did someone mention Husky work table and MOTU 🤓Love the Husky table. Great setup you created there, such a great job
Really appreciate that. The build out continues. Hopefully a full reveal soon. Thanks for hanging.
Nice place to work and chill
A work in progress. But a very chill work in progress. 😁
Quick question, because I also just set up my M1 Max 14" with a beautiful Gigabyte M32U. How does the one USB-C cable give you hub functionality? Because if I connect my USB-C > DisplayPort cable, the monitor will run 4K@144Hz but my wired accessories do not function. The USB devices' signals apparently don't travel back to my MacBook via the USB-C cable, which only charges and transmits the display signal. The monitor comes with a KVM built-in, but I believe it's meant to be used with USB A uplink.
So in this particular setup, it’s USB-C to USB-C, which is setup for charging and data transfer. That communication wouldn’t flow back as far as hub functionality if it’s DP, unfortunately.
this was worth the wait
Many thanks. Always good to see you pop up over here.
Just stumbled onto your channel by happenstance. You make some seriously excellent videos! Automatically had to sub. Thanks for the great content!
Hey, really appreciate that. Glad to have you here with us. More to come 😉🤘
Grovemade ridiculously expensive , so beautiful.
I will pass
Yeah, these are pieces that are typically collected slowly over time, but should also stand the test of time. But definitely an investment.
Great setup I have the same monitors. What’s the desk length? Fits so much and still have space. I’m looking for a practical work top at the moment
Thanks! It’s about 8 feet in length. I believe the full dimensions are in the description, but I’ve pretty much built the rest of the studio around this piece.
This was so subtle and slick! I hope to be this organised as I build my setup step by step. 🤣
Also wanna update you that I’ve made my choice for the MacBook and I’m going all in just for my ease of mind. Thank you for hearing me out and advising me during my pre-purchase turmoil.
Hey thanks. And, so glad to hear about going all in. Let me know how it’s going when it comes in. 🤙
Piece by piece, slowly but surely. 😉
@@KevinRossRN Yeah got a great deal from one of the dealers. But I’ll still keep popping up with my doubts and questions. xD
Ha! Always doubts and questions. Just keep that forward momentum. 😁
Decided to sit down and watch some more of your videos trying to learn whatever I can. Noticed the Never Summer hat right off the bat! Love to see it, the Proto 2 has been one of my favorite decks for a while now!
Ha! Yeah, the Never Summer brand has been with me for awhile. It seems I always just end up with a hat or shirt because my kids end up with the new gear while I’m still hanging out on skateboards and snowboards from a very long time ago. 😁
The narration in the intro gives me chills! That setup is sick! The minimalistic approach and the contrast of black and white are amazing!
Ha! I appreciate the time you spent here. And I try to keep things as minimal as possible, although when it becomes a full blown filming set, let’s just say all the “things” come out of those cabinets. 💀
Funny! Great video!
Hey Jerry! Thanks my friend. Good to see you.
천사ㅋㅋ mean engel
Looks So Sweet Kevin! Great Job. I see you upgraded soft box lights as well. Still rocking the Andoer lights here. One of the best things I bought for my studio. Happy New Year!
Well I’ve had the Aperture ones for a while and really love them. I’m in the middle of putting together a rail system so I can hang them from the ceiling and get the stands off the floor.
I’ll definitely share that once it’s all done. And yes, lights really make the difference. Glad they’re working out.
👋 any recommendations for budget friendly monitor?
What’s your budget, and your primary use?
Looks great! I love the minimalist nature of it and the Grovemade stuff is really sweet.
I have a pretty nice setup I've been working on here too but it's not as minimalist. It's a dual purpose setup for my day job and my creative "work" (LOL). Maybe some time I'll post a pic on Twitter or something...
I love the LED strip on the back edge of the desk. Had that at my previous home office but things changed after the move here. I'll probably go back to it because I love the ambient light it offers and the contrast is helpful in reducing eye strain (in my opinion). I have a strip along and under the front edge of the desk (aimed to floor). I've got an extra controller and strip in my drawer - maybe I'll add it to the rear edge this weekend for something fun to do. :)
Keep on keepin' on dude - thanks for sharing how you roll.
Much appreciated friend. Yes, it’s a work in progress. The desks are still the same, but I just pulled everything out (except for the desk behind me) and replaced the flooring. Full reveal coming, but it’s really clean now.
I agree. I love these little strips of light. It sets the mood and offers some of that ambient fill for when I’m editing.
Definitely post a pic…are you on Instagram at all?
@@KevinRossRN Yep for now I'm still on Instagram ... Seriously thinking of deleting everything that has to do with Meta out of my life lol. Same username. I'll post there ... Good idea 😉
Cool. You can always tag me in case for some reason I don’t see it. But yeah, I was on an Instagram hiatus for quite a while until recently. I only posted photos there, but now I’m mostly posting short form content. 🤷♂️Business
Beautiful setup Kevin.
Ah, many many thanks my friend. It’s been quite a grind to get it to this point.
@@KevinRossRN I bet it was. But the result is there.
It is indeed. A slow build, but I’m good with that.
*I have been looking at the 62 in desk for about a month now. I am wondering if the crossbar is necessary. I will not be putting anywhere near 300 lbs on it. I am 5'9" and would like to have leg room and the ability to put 1 or 2 Ikea drawers under the desk. The bar, even if I don't put it in the middle will keep the drawers from fitting against the wall and allow more space for my legs. Do you have any thoughts Kevin? *
So even if you put the bottom crossbar toward the back do you think that’ll push the drawers out too far?
@@KevinRossRN I am not sure. I want to be able to push the drawers back as much as possible. The desk is only 24in deep.
Yeah, we’ll that bottom crossbar is really there to stabilize much heavier loads. The top itself is pretty heavy, but the frame is also fairly sturdy, so you’d be fine. The crossbar is a “thinner” piece of metal and I think just really there to support the top portion of the frame and the legs from spreading out when working with heavier materials, which as a desk, I’d bet you wouldn’t come close to anything that heavy.
Looking good! I am still looking to find a affordable monitor that can replace my trusty old Apple Thunderbolt Display. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks! Well, when you say affordable…do you have a specific budget in mind? For creative work I assume?..In the sense of photo/video that is. Or other uses?
@@KevinRossRN Yeah below the 500 euro/dollars and indeed creative work
Well I’m sure you know it’s hard to replace those gorgeous displays, however, have you looked at the Asus ProArt line of monitors? They’re not often talked about, but do get some good reviews from creators. Do you have access to those where you are?
Also, have you looked at the BenQ line?
@@KevinRossRN thx Kevin! I haven't checked those yet. So far I have checked some Samsung's and Lg's.
👍👍👍
The LGs are great as well. Look for the ones that have a B toward the end of the model number. Those are from their business line and often have a better warranty and support.
Awesome setup :) Thanks :)
Thanks for hanging out. 🤙
Also: how do you do the top-down camera/light setup?
I’ll do a full tour soon, but my light (right now) is on a c stand and my overhead camera is on a rolling stand. However I’m in the process of hanging these from the ceiling.
@@KevinRossRN rolling stand - that’s something I’m going add
It’s the bees knees. I did a video on it and have switched it up slightly, but I really love it.
What made you choose the 14" over the 16"? Does the 14" throttle the performance of the M1 Max at all from your experience? I really want more screen real estate, as well as the power of the M1 Max for my video editing and motion graphic work.
I’m often on the move, and so I just wanted the portability. I also have the Mac mini, so I normally focus on portability with my laptops, but it’s certainly nice to dock it on the ultrawide when I need to.
I’d say if you saw the 16 next to the 14, you may easily pick the 16…which is understandable.
But as far as performance, I haven’t had one issue with it delivering what I’m asking of it. I’ve been running several tests over the last few weeks and can say that there are certainly benchmarks where it will throttle, but again these are benchmarks and I can’t repeat them in my actual use.
There will be some benefits of that extra battery life and thermal headroom, and if you’re not as concerned with a little extra weight and the footprint…then the 16 is definitely a consideration.
And these M1 Max machines will get even better with continued optimization.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks for your super in-depth response :D I think I might opt for the 16" as an investment and spec the memory out to the 64GB for future proofing - just don't know whether to expand the SSD too - maybe 2TB?
Or perhaps I can just stick with the 1TB SSD and get externals like the Samsungs? What do you think about external storage with these new machines?
Well, I’ve done a few videos on the external SSDs. One of them released on Friday and the other was a couple of weeks ago…along with several others.
But the shirt of it is, I work in them all of the time. Pretty much all my work. I think having a 2TB would be nice, and although I’m never short on space with 1TB…However having 2 TBs I think is a pretty decent sweet spot.
The one thing I really like about the external setups is that it just keeps the “mess” off of the internal. I try to organize my files as I’m working, but you know how it can get sometimes when you’ve got multiple projects.
I will say however that because of the speed of these internal SSDs, paying the extra 200USD is worth it in my opinion if you don’t want to be tethered.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks, Kevin! Totally the kind of rational answer I was looking for - was thinking 2TB might be the sweet spot for myself too as I really like to keep organized on externals myself too for client work.
I think you've helped me figure out exactly what I want :D Now just need to book more video editing gigs to get it paid for :D
Ha! Well, those gigs are already in the works. 🤞Glad to help friend. Sending my best.
Hi Kevin, Beautiful setup!! I have a quick question: I am looking to use an Ultrawide monitor with my mabook pro M1, but am very confused about the "blurry effect" and other issues. How crisp and clear are the fonts (when you are using excel/word/acrobat if you use those ? Thank you in advance
I do use those and I type out notes and use documents/pdfs often. With MacOS it does make it difficult with certain monitors, as you’re aware.
In my original review I didn’t really address this, but I would in an updated experience to say that for those that are into coding and working with text (more than anything else), then the LG line up is a good choice. ASUS ProArt has some newer displays as well.
I’d likely go with an IPS panel if you can. Not to say that the VA or MVA panels are bad…they can be great, but depending on how you’re using it, that IPS can have an advantage of consistency with the different viewing angles.
Hello, I saw your setup and it is something similar to what I am looking for and I wanted to ask you if it is worth buying the 14-inch macbook pro with m1 max? For portability, performance, although my question comes in the battery, is it very bad? taking into account that I am going to choose the m1 max for video editing above all. Greetings and very good video
I’ve done videos on this, and I’d say to get some extra battery then I’d choose the 24 Core GPU. You’ll have the extra video encoder in the M1 Max and still quite a bit of heavy lifting for that GPU. If I were to do it all over again, that’s likely the way I’d go.
@@KevinRossRN Thank you very much for your answer.
Based on your experience, which one do you recommend, the m1 pro or the m1 max? knowing that my main objective is the video editing in final cut pro, after effects and similar
Max. It has the extra video encoder.
@@KevinRossRN Thank you very much
You got it.
Im thinking of getting something so I can stand some. Mayne even work my arms out. That Anker tb4 dock does look nice next to the mini.
It’s a good looking pair indeed 🥰
I do love being able to go from sitting to standing, and then back to sitting.
@@KevinRossRN me too although I stand anyways. My desk is at 29 inches. Haha. I have my set up in kitchen cause house is smaller haha. I'm real happy with my Anker dock. Although the big daddy is what I wanted. I'll just buy a Anker hub for other things. Also a good idea for when I do get a MacBook.
Oh you’re in the kitchen? Close to the snacks? 😬
I will say that the extra heavy lifting from the MBP has been nice because I’ve also been moving around a bit more, all over really.
I’m definitely going to be portable until I get the flooring in. Might find myself in the kitchen as well. 😁
@@KevinRossRN yes hahaha. 😆😆. I'm either cooking up some music or eggs.
Yes!! But hey, on these Apple Silicon machines there’s very little heat for cooking 🧑🍳 🤣
as always 🤘🏼
Right back at you🤘
