    Correction: In the video I referred to the motor in the M10 as a “servo motor”. I’ve since confirmed it’s actually a “stepping motor”.
    Servo motors typically have the advantages of faster acceleration and higher speed, as well as more precise positioning than stepping motors.
    More information on the differences can be found here:

      @@TheMunkyMagic Woudn't worry too much for as accuforce DD is a stepper motor and had great reviews. VRS though is releasing a $800 servo midge motor which has been used in the industry so might take a look at that. Good thing for us is there are plenty of options coming out but i still have my eye on a fanatec as i want to use it on a playstation aswell as pc and it might be the deal breaker.

I used the simagic wheel while visiting him once and was blown away by the quality of it. That said it's also the first DD wheel I've used. I can’t help but wonder what other advantages a direct drive has other than strength of FFB, since my Elite CSL has a ton of force that I keep the game FFB down to 3? Does it also give a more realistic feel otherwise?

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  4 года назад +9

      More fidelity and faster response are the main things. People get all caught up on the strength because it’s a number they can turn into a dick measuring contest. But in reality you’ll find most people are running somewhere between 6-15NM on even the most high end wheelbases.
      The extra detail is the difference, but you can’t put a number on that so easily.

  • @RamjetX
    @RamjetX 4 года назад +6

    Yeah... with motors... spinning the shaft isn't really indicative of the 'quality' or errr I'm trying to say words like 'feel' ... etc..
    The motor controllers can do a couple of things with the motors when powered off... depending on the setup and how the manufacturer wants it to be. Motor controllers can have electronic braking enabled or disabled by default. Spinning the shaft won't tell you anything except if the controller has the motor contacts shorted for electric braking or not. If you get what I mean?
    edit... I should also add that Steppers have many more coils or steps per rotation than a Brushless DC... this will totally change the characteristic of free spinning the shaft. It's not really a size thing. More of how they're constructed and have many more pole positions for the precise control of a stepper.
    Good example is the NLR V3.... the electric braking is applied to the seat even when the power is removed. It's the default state. Because if they didn't you'd be able to slide around in the chair with the power off...

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  4 года назад

      Thanks for the info mate. I always appreciate your expertise. I’ll definitely be talking more about the “feel” tomorrow when driving, and yes there are a lot of variables which is why I said it was an observation but not a concern for now. But still a useful way to illustrate the fundamental differences in terms of rotating mass and related inertia.

    • @iseeq72

      I never would buy or even consider a chinese company based wheel. They basically copy the design of other companies (which is very easy as they produce them anyway for them!) and then sell it on their own - it is systemic, also in other industries. Never will support that.

    • @RamjetX
      @RamjetX 4 года назад +2

      @@iseeq72 well...look. There's a couple sides to that. Companies want the profit margin of Chinese manufacturing. But not the risk of lost IP. It's a trade off. Especially in an industry where your IP isn't protected in the country where your profit margin is made.
      There is no way any business doesn't consider, cost and evaluate the risk of this happening.
      Now, from a consumer stand point, you have to consider price vs quality and fit for purpose of anything you buy.
      If the manufacturing process is near identical, the quality almost the same and the cost is much less. Then the equation for decision making swings.
      Loyalty to company branding is almost pointless today simply because, as you say, they're often copied and or made in the same factory or using identical parts.
      Base your purchasing decision on what you get for your money, weigh up support and its value to you (as support means more to some as it does to others). And use your dollars wisely.
      Principles are great n'all... But if principles about not supporting Chinese manufacturing were in the interest of all companies... they wouldn't be made in china.

    • @iseeq72
      @iseeq72 4 года назад +1

      @@RamjetX I am well aware of that... I've experienced companies that not only manufactured their product, they invested in building up businesses on-site as well. Only to see their offices emptied from one day to another - all blueprints stolen. And one or two years later they started to throw copied products on the market (in one case multi million dollar construction equipment). They had protected and worldwide registered designs.
      It is not about principles it is about a consuming behaviour that bites every single one of us in the ass at some point...

    Great overview so far. Love to see your impressions of it in iRacing.
    The support issue is my biggest concern as well. Contact with the official folks seemed a bit snarky at times. And the whole issue around which websites and Facebook pages are official and which are not also gives a bad feel. Contact to the official Canadian reseller was similar, hard to get much of any real details currently.
    Hopefully they get it all sorted out as it has a lot of potential but even at its lower price compared to other DD it is still a lot to spend on a new unproven system, with potentially only dealer support.

      @boostedmedia  4 года назад

      Agreed. They have said they will offer support to anyone who buys direct from them, but are only selling direct in situations where there is no other option available.

The only problem that I consider to be very risky is the internal quality of the electrical/electronic components. Chinese manufacturers in all their products install a calculated component that, after passing the warranty, will burn or break something happens and that beautiful product that had a price so accessible it does not work again if you have observed in everything happens the same no matter what it is, the clothes thread dissolved, the wires coverage of the electric cables is split on the tv a capacitor, diode, resistance burns in everything there is a control of useful time to the days of pass the guaranty end zip zip goodbye and that is a robbery to all the inhabitants of the world the biggest problem is that everything is made in China

    Chinese Australian subscriber here, think it was retailed online for 500 AUD in China the last time checked which was roughly during the later half of last year. If I am not mistaken, I looked this company up a little more than one year ago and got to know that the company started off as a chip & motherboard manufacturer for DDWs, and they switched to making the whole damn thing not too long ago. Bet their R&D department is constantly striving for improvements cuz I have heard loads of positive feedbacks regarding this wheel. Also, back then when I was googling the company, I found that their English language skills presented in their socials were not sufficient enough for effectively exploiting the overseas market. It is good to see that they now have approached content makers like you to test and promote their products. It just annoys me that some people commenting here came to this video with their own agenda and biased mindset when it comes to Chinese made products. I remember seeing one ignorant imbecile saying the wheel is bound to break within two years and the company is for sure going to vanish after taking customers’ money. And if I were to reason with people like him, the convo will most likely end up with him calling the entire nation as shit. But guess what, there are tons of happy customers back in China and probably around the globe by now who are not willing to pay a ridiculous amount of money for Fanatec or Simucube products but would go for a cheaper and yet still legit DDW from Simagic.

    Dealing with a Chinese company with hardware returns is essentially impossible and as such the dealer model was the best it was going to be I guess, but it’s a major worry. That said, all sim racing companies offer poor service - they either offer poor pre-sale service (E.g. they are completely out of stock and have nothing to sell) or they offer poor after sales service... or both.
    I think at £800 it’s very well priced and it’s going to be at most 50% of the cost of a Simucube once you’ve added a wheel so it will be really interesting to see the next video.

    Love the review mate and love the channel I’ve been subscribed sense the clubsport days✌🏻. But honest answer why would you buy a Simagic when you could buy a Simucbe Sport for the same money? obviously excluding the wheel. It just looks reallllllllllllly bad compared to the other brands.

    It isn't the cheapest DD wheel on the market, Simplicity still hold that title by a good margin. Simplicity's cheapest offering is just over 70% the price of this wheel base you can get a 25Nm wheelbase from Simplicity. The difference being you can't get a full package with wheel from Simplicity so you will need to find another supplier for the wheel. Not really an issue when you consider there are plenty of options and at the low end the Simplicity wheelbase is over $800 cheaper than this package delivered to Australia. Considering the 20Nm wheelbase is only $1282 delivered to Australia by the time you source a wheel you end up with a much better option for about the same price.

    43:51 ive never sat in a real car and felt the wheel just spin freely ! There is all the friction from the tyres on the ground and also the rack ! This is where belt drive always felt more akin to the real thing . I agree that it must have good software to replicate what is missing from the free spinning shaft .

      That’s where the Simucube 2 Ultimate is really outstanding. It genuinely feels exactly the same as the resistance you feel in a real car when it’s powered on.

    Nice and informative review in Barrys style :) The motor on simagic is a step motor not the same like on simucube thats why its not that smooth. Its more similar to accuforce. Actually knowing the chinese way of doing business probably its a copy of accuforce :))) It will be interesting to compare it with csw 2.5 that is on similar price.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  4 года назад +1

      Yep, I’ll elaborate on the characteristics of the motor more tomorrow when we look at the software. I was originally told it was a servo motor but you’re right, it’s a stepping motor.

      The Simagic Alpha (a 15Nm servo base) is visually a rip-off of the Simucube 2 but more expensive than the 25Nm Simucube 2 (Pro)

      Then add the price of their 70mm wheel hub, plus a VRS mounting bracket, then you still have to buy a wheel rim and button cluster...so that $799 VRS wheelbase suddenly isn't so affordable afterall.

      "If you find Simgaic Dynamic products purchased from our web site do not perform to your needs (subject to normal wear and tear), you can return within 14 days from receipt, unused merchandise in original packaging including the complete accessories for a refund."
      Seriously? Unused? Also add a 15% restocking fee, and shipping. (And the 'Simgaic' typo is straight from their website too, perfect example of typical Chinese QA). Chinese made is fine for low quality/low price disposable products. The problem is, as the price of Chinese made goes up, the quality does not follow. Expect this to burn out or break inside of two years. And the company will have made their money and changed names or closed up shop by then. Personally, I'm giving this one a wide berth.
