The Word was my favourite show as a teenager in the 90s. They booked THE best groups and the fact it was live and you didn’t know what kind of chaos was going to happen made it all the better 😅
On the same week this was aired, BBC Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes got himself in hot water after he accidentally played the full uncensored version of RATM's Killing In The Name at #27 on the BBC Radio 1 Top 40 countdown at 5:00 PM on a Sunday Afternoon!
Would love to see a full archive of The Word. There was one episode where they turned up with cameras at this lad's house who was having a full-on house party whilst his parents were away, hilarious! The show format was great, the bands brilliant, and the guests legendary. Surely someone has them all on an old VHS collection?
There is a channel with lots of episodes, not sure if it has everyone but has a lot. This was filmed in teddington near where I grew up, would have been awesome to be able to go
So glad that those shows have been uploaded. I.grew up in the 90s. The world was a better place especially as the UK still had its own identity. Now everything has been Americanised. Please note the conplete absence of uptalk speech.
I never understood why there was never a DVD of The Word performances. Many great bands on the show (and there have been Jools Holland, Saturday Night Live DVDs...).
Thanks for posting one of music's pivotal moments. I'd just got home mashed and put the Word on and here they came. I seem to remember L7 being on around the same time and that got lairy too :)
@@originalwhit Yeah Donita pulled her denims out to flash her thatch off. At one festival, she yanked out her jammy rag and lobbed it into the crowd. Donita Sparks didn't give a f*** mate....
Can just imagine if this had gone out at the old 6pm time... I remember Shaun Ryder getting Chris Evans into trouble with Pretty Vacant, which was hilarious.
This song was the first song among their songs when I heard on the radio around 1993. By the way, Zack looks like very angry Kriss Kross here a bit. :)
This version of Zack was intense as fuck during RATM’s first years of 1992-93, not surprised at all since he had all that anger unleashed from his previous band Inside Out which was a hardcore punk band he first sung for.
Saw them at the Borderline club in London in 92, a lot of the guys up front at this were guys I used to go to or see at gigs at the time. Im pretty sure Zack has a fabric T Shirt on which was Chris who worked in Slam City Skates band, Chris was up front at this performance. Halcyon days.
i see Dominic and John from Understand, John passed away a few years ago so it really warmed my heart to see him on the top of that pile. I wish the resolution was higher so I could spot a few more friends. Its definitely a Fabric shirt and I remember Chris giving it to him. He gave him a fuct shirt too, that started all the bootleg ones. Am I tripping or was Rolf Harris there the same night?😬
Stage invasion leads to zack being smothered before he's finished singing the song and 1 of the greatest live performances is cut short, whilst the music still plays. Mark Lamar sees it happen and simplly chuckles, Chris Eubank peruses all the madness that happened every weekend on the oddest live TV show ever. They never had any security- Go figure! Should have been called "Murphy's Law", because if shit could go down, it inevitably would this tv show. Didn't last long!
The 'i'd do anything to be on TV eating a grannies toe nail clippings, licking a fat man's armpits and walking in dog shit laidened flip flops and of course this epic live set from RATM. Makes the 'Masked Singer' looks like Songs of Praise ffs! Bring it back!! Today's TV is total arse!
"The Word" was crass, puerile and vulgar. It also had the best live music of the 90s. Why isn't there a DVD of the finest music from the programme? Blur, Oasis, RATM, L7, Honky - it couldn't put a foot wrong. Great stuff.
I remember watching this. I was 18 and it wasn't my style at all: I thought it was shit at the time, but it made an impression. Have never forgotten it.
They chose the invites for juxtaposition and to be as controversial as possible. this show might as well have beeen called Murphy's Law, because if there was a possibility that shit would go wrong, it inevitably did on this show. Did you realise that the singers voice stopped mid sentence in this song because he got smothered by a stage invasion. I saw this live, But literally just now remembered iit therefore googled it. The rules were changed on British TV literally becausse of this show, in terms of what companies would allow live, without close security personnel. Hilarious then, hilarious now!
1992 I think . Unsuprisingly, the Show was Cancelled after a while… I'm surprised It got insurance. Absolute chaos, every week. This Stage invasion wasn't even the craziest thing that happened.

Sat in parents house in Wales 16 years old this changed me forever
I miss the 90s. I'm glad I got to live through them, they were a great time.
I was 19 when this was aired - amazing scenes :) Along with the L7 performance. Epic.
The Word would not work at any other time than then. It was truly epic ! Great bands, guests and memories!
What a time to be young
Chris Eubank surveying the scene at the end... love it.
absolutely! lol
Hahaha, yeah!
This just doesn't happen anymore. A perfect performance from a game changing band.
dude,,ive just posted this on fakebook, sayin exactly what uve said!
I remember this like it was yesterday. Never 4got this performance. The Word was a Gr8 show!
Came home from being out on friday night to hear this epic track. Bought the cd the next day and blown away by it.
Chris Eubank and Race Against the Machine.
Word.
Who else remember being a teenager or a young adult during this time amazing time for the youth of generation x
Oh man, the 90's were beautiful.
This is one of the most delightfully 90s clips I've ever laid my eyes on. Spectacular.
so glad the MC5 influenced bands like these

Amazing, stage invasion leaves only the drums playing :)

the fact they didn't think about a Mosh pit is very telling for a virgin live channel.

The Word had so many great bands play over the years. I love the look of disgust on Chris Eubanks face at the end Buhahaha

I saw them the following Tuesday 16th at Edwards no.8 in Brum

Joey Roller well then I stand corrected. I am sure it was still the 16th that we saw them at Edward's though.
if that's Chris Eubank then this must be the same episode with Primal Scream.
