  • Went for a 45 minute walk under decent rainfall wearing my new Helly Hansen "Men's Odin 9 World Infinity Shell Jacket" (purchased myself, 2022) made with their "Lifa Infinity Pro" fabric that doesn't rely on any chemical treatments in order to resist water. The result? Totally dry inside! I can't yet say if it will last all day, or speak to the long term durability of the fabric, but at first glance at least, it seems good!

OK my question is how heavy was rain, how long you was testing when Jacket outside?

Do you see any issues if the water isn't beading that well?

I have serious doubts there could be any breathability when it's really wet. Frankly though, when it's raining hard, I've never felt anything besides moist or outright damp, no matter what I'm wearing. It is a bit of a pain after walking in the rain to get back into a car though, as the jacket is still damp, even after shaking it off. It didn't take long to dry when hung up after I got home, but still something to consider. HH promotes this fabric for it's not requiring a DWR spray, but I kinda wonder what it would be like with one. For the price, I'm scared to try though. I actually returned an ArcTeryx Alpha SV and got this instead. Would I make that choice again? I dunno. It's hard to tell without comparison. This does keep me dry, and doesn't require a spray, so I'm happy enough for now.

@@hubickwhat are your thoughts after 8 months? Did the jacket perform well? Is the membrane still durable? What about the wetouts of the fabric? Did you see any problems with breathability when it's soaked after rain? Any further comments regarding general durability of the jacket would be helpful.
      Thanks

@@SPYROSMANTZAKOS After a long unusually dry summer, we're just getting back into the rainy season here in Vancouver this week, and I haven't had the chance to wear the jacket that much since my previous assessments. After my experiences last winter after purchase, I am somewhat unhappy with the garment, and how it basically immediately wets out and then feels wet to the touch. After speaking with the manager of the HH store where I purchased it, he has gifted me a bottle of their DWR spray, and I'm going to try applying that (essentially overriding the whole point of the treatment-free Lifa Infinity Fabric). Can a wetted out fabric be breathable? I don't have the ability to test that in any objective way myself, but I obviously have doubts - my *hunch* is this fabric won't be very breathable under any circumstances - but I don't find GoreTex hard shells to be so either. I have not worn the garment enough to test durability... I can only say that, having owned a great number of shells over the years, this, similar to the ArcTeryx Alpha SV, would rank at the top for what I would *expect* from the garment based just on picking it up and examining the fabric - which is to say, despite the wetting out, it *feels* very durable, and like it will last. Right now, I feel like this shell is maybe perfect for snow sports, and less so as a dedicated *rain* shell - but I'll see when I have time to apply the DWR treatment if that changes things. Hope this helps.

@@hubick found this video because mine failed in about 15 minutes of walking in medium rain. It only failed slightly on one shoulder - but for a £600 jacket, you'd expect a LOT more right? I'm so baffled by how badly it's performing.

@@TomMorterLaing I'm sorry to hear that. That's horrible if it's actually letting water inside. You should make a video and take it to show your retailer and maybe they will offer you an exchange.
