- As the power struggle between China and the US intensifies across Asia, Indonesia faces dramatic threats ranging from Chinese regional domination to a Cold War that could turn hot. At the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, one of Indonesia’s top foreign policy analysts Dewi Fortuna Anwar set out Indonesia’s non-aligned world view to DW’s Richard Walker, explaining how Jakarta has pushed back against Chinese claims in the contested waters around the South China Sea, Indonesia’s response to China’s rejection of international arbitration, and why it is seeking closer military ties with the US at the same time as nurturing strong economic relations with China. And she sets out Jakarta’s fears of being dragged into proxy conflicts as Washington and Beijing limber up for generational battle for global power.

I admire Indonesia’s stand on their maritime security and not allow bullies to prevail hope Philippines can take more action like Indonesia.

as an indonesian myself, i can say we hate it when big powers trying to gain favor from us just bcs of that Malaka Strait (which is a choke point for both US and China's export/import). we want to be neutral no matter what. history has showed us no matter which side are we siding (back then we welcomed Japan and they decimated us, US and its CIA was vicious after '45), we always get fk'd.
if the big guys want to talk to each other, we will gladly promote and give them platform. but we will never pick sides.

Thailand even allowed china to build a man made canal that will cut thru thailand's middle portion. This will provide an alternate route from the strait of malacca. Singapore and USA protested against thailand and so the project is now on hold
Singapore may say its aligned with the west but its media, and people (population dominated by chinese) says otherwise. So singapore allegiance is 50-50

Im a Filipino, i approve this.. a very well informed, well meaning resource person that can articulate her mind in a neutral and factual way.
As a Malaysian national, I firmly believe that it is of utmost importance for countries including Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, and Malaysia to assertively uphold our territorial rights in the South China Sea. The proposition of the ‘ten-dash line’ by China is, in my opinion, is simply a ridiculous claim.

On the other hand, about indonesia’s stand on the south china sea issue, they too have problem with 9 dash line, and Indonesian military power can’t be ignored like what philippines have . The only thing the woman said that’s needed to be done, is for china to desist from creating tension in the region so that countries like Philippines won’t have to resort inviting external forces . China should act like a big brother and a good neighbor, ASEAN with China would be the next economic powerhouse if that happens.

This Indonesian professor is knowledgeable and very precise. "China should indeed restrain itself in imposing their 9(10) dash line claim over the Indo-Pacific sea to avoid outside power". ASEAN should unite more on these stands. ASEAN countries work so hard for a peaceful region, which can be ruined by China's aggression over the sea besides, these locations are so far from their coastline. Huge respect to the interviewer DW and to the wisdom of this Indonesian professor.
And China should also stop militarizing the islands they claim. If they really want peace, then why not co-exist with ASEAN? Live in peace and disregard their desire to dominate Asia or the whole world. At the end of the day, we all know that wether we stand against China or not, they will cause war. Because they wanted to replace US as a global power. And ASEAN countries don't care about who is more powerful between US and China. They want peace.
The matters of UNCLOS and 9/10 dashlines is more than distance from their coastlines to Indonesia. Indonesia's territorial integrity and sovereignty is one of direct primary beneficiary of UNCLOS. Which is why Indonesia very firm on this point and always state "must follow international law."
There was an event few years ago, involving PH and CN on some SCS-related disputes. Indonesia sent a very strong diplomatic note supporting PH claim. This was surprising move because there's no apparent benefit from agitating CN at that time. However the why of this move become apparent when you consider how strongly Indonesia feel about UNCLOS.
Even now, people seem unaware on how strongly Indonesia political circles feel in regards to UNCLOS. Some commenters from Indonesia even seem unaware of the issue, tho given the historical note regarding the event is only mentioned few paragraphs at most in Indo history textbooks, it's no wonder many miss the importance.
I think even CN now try to work the dashlines around the convention to try not to incite Indonesia's strong response, though I don't see how it could work legally.

7:07 This is also what the Philippines officials mostly said that Philippines claims are IUndisputable and the UNCLOS decision back in 2016 is Permanent.
International laws do not apply to the existing cases. The South China Sea was controlled by China from ancient times up to the present time. The Philippines never controlled the South China Sea in ancient times or the present. They stalled some lands from China in the South China Sea.
Unclos doesn't even have the authority to decide the territorial sovereignty over any area.
They explicitly said that in their ruling.
Plus the decision was nearly a mediation result which China did not even participate nor lay its case, not a final decision.
The fact is China has a great claim because China made its claim to the region first before the other countries involved in the dispute did not even existed as independent countries she when China made its claim , including the Philippines. And their colonial masters whom they were under of didn't say anything on their behalf to counter China's claims.
CHIANG Kai Shek from the Republic of China made his claim in the mid 1940s on behalf of China
The Philippines only made it's original claim in 1971z decades after China
And according to international law it's first come first serve when it comes to territorial claims
That is how the US, the UK and France have come to posess huge regions and large amounts of Islands in the South Pacific.
That is how Caledonia, Tahiti and many other Islands in the South Pacific came belong to France and that is how Bikini Island and all those Islands in the South Pacific the US used blow up their nuclear weapons in the 1950s and 1969s came to belong to the United States.
Same thing with Britain.
The PCA is null and void with only the Philippines-initiated case. China opted out of the compulsory arbitration clause.
Do you even know what stipulated in the UNCLOS? It is hundreds of pages treaty and not only a few sentences short.
Why would China, ROC or PRC otherwise, would sign UNCLOS if it took away territory, and then trying to claim it back illegally?
UNCLOS recognizes China's claims on historical basis. That's why they sign it. The question is if Philippines knew what they sign away when they sign the UNCLOS.
Rather than dogtailing the American that is not even UNCLOS signatory, you should study UNCLOS thoroughly.
And rather than making ruckus senselessly to satisfy the American, why would you not follow Indonesia's example. We negotiated the boundary on Natuna Island with China. And despite Western media reportings, our boundary in Natuna is strong. But we have to be fair. As we told Mike Pompeo flat in 2019, no Chinese in Natuna also means no American in Natuna. Fair enough?
Actually, the PCA is null in every case. The Australian flips the bird to the PCA on Timor Leste. And the United States of America is the biggest offender of the PCA. In fact, nobody ever abide to the PCA. If China respects the PCA it would be the world first.

What is meant by the prof, our stance is we only acknowledge rule based claims. While the 9 dash line is invalid claim acc to the UNCLOS, we refrain ourself for being called in dispute with China and ignoring China invitation to negotiate countless time. If we acknowledge we are in dispute, means we acknowledge their baseless claim. Our stance is there is only "dispute" over valid claims according to UNCLOS.
Excellent interview. The reporter brought up threats and belligerence and other fear-mongering topics over and over again, but the professor wasn't having it. She calmly, clearly, professionally walked everything back down a notch, offering clarity instead of sensationalism and optimistic neutrality instead of strongly favoring or criticizing either China or the US. We need more people like her in the news.

A name change might reduce confusion but the name of a body of water is intended to indicate its geographical neighborhood and has no meaning in regards to ownership.
Sea of Japan does not belong to Japan with Russians and Koreans loudly making that fact very clear. The Gulf of Mexico does not belong to Mexico and most of it is divided amicably into the EEZ of the U.S. and Mexico.
There is no doubt that PRC has caused enormous harm to itself by becoming territorially aggressive and laying ownership claims over vast stretches of the South China Sea. It’s important to understand that PRC claims most of the South China Sea as TERRITORIAL WATER, not merely an Exclusive Economic Zone.
An EEZ remains international water and the EEZ claimant cannot restrict traffic through it. However, if the water is territorial water, then the water is owned by that country and it can control who can enter it.

The Philippines beaching a military vessel on the Thomas Shoal has nothing to do with EEZ interests which is only economic. This is obviously a military move, and encouraged and supported by the US. China has a historic claim on the Nansha/Spratlys and will not back down. However China has always been open to negotiate on EEZ.

International borders, including territorial waters, are determined through mutual agreements based on international agreements. No one agrees that South China Sea is PRC’s territory.
