I lived in South Carolina. Awesome place. But Michigan can't be beat..... The four seasons are definitely more extreme and beautiful. Go to the UP in February rent a snowmobile. You will never leave. Go west in the summer Holland, Grand Haven and Pentwater. Awesome beachs beautiful towns and NO salt water and NO sharks.
Thanks for the thumbs-up (pun intended), though you neglected something about winters here: So many of the things you miss out on by being outdoors in the summer, which is GREAT btw, are still available! Wine and beer tastings, dart leagues, bowling, card tournaments, art exhibitions, music, the list is endless! And if you're a true outdoors person, the winter won't deter you... it will invigorate you! Two things DO kinda suck though, a lot of the roads, and a governor who apparently idolizes the insane liberalism of California. But if you move here, DON'T try to turn it into a copy of the place you just left; you will NOT be welcomed. And that's something you could say of almost anyplace.
We moved to central Michigan about 8 years ago for two reasons, family - of course, but the other reason is because the housing prices were half as much as they were in Asheville, North Carolina at the time. The cost of living and housing in this area is still lower than most areas in the state. Plus, we are by both farm land and "up north" in the woods. So, food is cheaper here too!
I've been here in SE Michigan for 34 years now and I can see why people say it's boring. Things to do: Sleeping Bear Dune, Mackanac, Tequemanon Falls. How many times do I need to do the same thing? I'm envious of all the things people have on the West with the mountains and beaches. If you have a friend with a boat that definitely makes summers better though here in Michigan with Raftoff/Jobby etc. but yeah I've done it all here and I need something new. But everyone I know lives here so I keep staying and hating the winters every year. edit: i'll say one thing that I still have not done though is go to the UP or upper Michigan in general and camp in the very low light pollution areas so you can see all the stars at night. That's on my bucket list here in MI but haven't gotten around to it. SE Michigan has so much light pollution it's just depressing.
I prefer living in the very northern Detroit suburbs. Beautiful starry skies and big yards. Tons of lakes, rivers, and trails. Cute downtowns. No traffic. Much closer to up north. Cheaper homes. It's pretty perfect really.
The Michigan weather is probably to most mild in the USA. If you live in the SE corner you only get "snow storms" of 2" at a time. The local media blows the weather way out of proportion. In addition we don't get hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, severe droughts or many tornadoes.
Most houses below $300.000 are fixer uppers. They will cost you more money to fix them up after you buy one. Most older basements in Michigan leak because of the soil. So that will cost you more to fix them. Electric prices keep going up. It's cheaper to cool a house than try and heat it. And in Michigan we a lot more heating days than cooling days. Burning wood helps. Schools aren't great in the state either. They have been pouring money into Detroit schools for many many decades with no real improvement. The tax on gasoline is one of the highest in the country. So gas will cost you more than it does in Ohio or Indiana. November December and January will have you begging for just one day of sunshine. Just wanted you to know about some bad with the good.😊
There are some fantastic beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline. I'm a tree lover and I like that about Michigan too. Unfortunately, the U.S. is falling apart and I hate cold and cloudy weather. I moved to Vilcabamba, Ecuador. Perfect weather all the time, and very affordable.
I'm high up in the mountains of Ecuador. I haven't been to the beaches here yet. As far as crime? I can walk around Vilcabamba at night, no problem. Loja is safe too. Guayaquil on the coast is questionable. To say Ecuador is unsafe is like saying Illinois is unsafe because of Chicago.
Michigan Politics have changed, tourists have changed, taxes were pretty high. I’ve lived in Port Huron, Alma, Troy, and Holland left in 09. The winters are no where near like they were in the late 70’s and 80’s. Rural living is the only way, and that is slowly being bought up. Look at house prices in Charlevoix, Traverse Cify, Marquette and Manistique to name a few. Chivalry is dead in the city ;)
Love your video. I born and raised in Detroit. Moved to Arizona 2016. I come home a lot. I really miss my hometown. In the summer there's so much to do. Well, Arizona is hot in the summer. But you still can get out. Detroit has things going on all year round.
I'll admit I'm speaking from the Metro Detroit area, but a number of arcades and other entertainment venues have opened in the area. Waterford has Zap zone, Auburn Hills has Round 1, Brighton has The Arcade..... there's a model railroad museum on Cooley Lake Road, there's the Dixieland flea market, Sea Life Aquarium which shares Great Lakes Crossing Mall with the aforementioned Round 1..... there's a lot more here than what some like to give credit for. I also visited a mall that has an indoor axe throwing range. And a good amount of that stuff can be done in the winter time. And you're right that the food scene is more diverse than some say. Like all places you just need to look around. Also Detroit style pizza FTW.
DON'T LET EM KNOW! SHHHH! Haha! I LOVE MICHIGAN, literal Third Coast. We get an amazing spread of all the seasons. As an outdoors person, it's amazing, I can literally take my boat 1 mile in any direction, and drop into a lake.
Born and raised in the Upper Peninsula. Recently moved back to Michigan after a short stint in Ohio. Clare county is now my home and will never leave this state again. 😎🍻
Lived in Michigan practically my whole life. The friendliest people in the World. Housing is relatively cheap. The beauty/ scenery is the best. If you are bored, that's your own fault. We are sensiable, down to earth, slightly old fashioned folks. We believe in family, home, church & Country. Do not come here expecting to make a big splash. You may be put in your place real quick. We would love for you to come check us out.
You didn’t mention the culture in Detroit - our great museums (the DIA is one of the best art museums in the country) and all our beautiful art deco theaters, musicals, symphonies, ballet, opera, etc. We have Motown Museum, a great science center, African American museum and smaller ones (history museum, maritime, etc.) Also all the zillions of cider mills, Meijer Gardens with gardens and sculptures and its huge, Art Prize also in Grand Rapids, we have TONS of cultural events. Plus major venues for pretty much every major musician comes here. Lots more to do besides sports and nature ! You missed The Henry Ford. People come by the busload from out of state and you can count tons of different state license plates in the parking lot - that’s a huge attraction in Michigan!
I don’t know much about the east side, but west Michigan and northern Michigan are amazing. Tons to do including vibrant outdoor life. With the country getting hotter all the time, I personally could not live south of Michigan. The weather is very temperate, and snowfall is decreasing every year. As a skier I wish there was more, but most people are happy with less.
Summer in Michigan is magical. You can leave the doors open and listen to the birds singing all day. It’s magical. I really don’t like being cold so all winter I complain, but I refuse to complain about being hot because you have to pick your battles. The great thing about winter is wool clothing. wool sweater wool socks, legwarmers you name it.
I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life. It’s a great state but our winters get old. The lack of sun is way worse than the cold and snow. When I retire I hope to leave the state to go south for three or four months of the year. The fall and summers are absolutely beautiful and there are plenty of things to do here.
depends on where you are in Michigan... SOME small towns suck. as in 5 pizza places in town that all suck. no decent restaurants.( DQ having the best food in town) good thing the alcohol is cheap! the cities are very stylish (don't forget to bring your friend Sam Colt) and if you're near Flint you can get some of that world famous water!!
You missed things like the great museums in downtown Detroit and at the major universities. The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village. Meijer Gardens. Detroit Zoo, John Ball Zoo in z Grand Rapids. Fox Theater. Wharton Center for the Performing Arts (I saw professional performances of Les Miserables and Hamilton there without going to New York). Detroit Symphony. Detroit Opera.
Me and my wife are empty nesters as of this year and will be selling our home in U.P Michigan. don't know if we'll find a better place to live but we're going travel and look for a while.
Car insurance is a little more expensive because it's more of a hybrid of the US and Canadian systems (since we're so close to the border). The roads by me, however, are all brand new!
I do gotta say, it's not always the best for astronomy, and it doesn't help when your neighbors always gotta have floodlights on all night, so those rare clear nights are a continued disappointment.
Lifelong 50 something SE Migander here. Se Mi, and the whole lower peninsula, has had much milder winters for over 10 years now. Just sold off my Ariens 2 stage snow thrower this year, hadn't been started in over 10 years. At most a broom or light shovel in that time. 15 + years ago, I bought the 2 stage because we needed it. Last deep snow storm was early 2010s. Don't know if this is permanent re climate change or a long cycle issue.
ooooh Buddy.... I was about to chew you out LMAO so was my hubby Lmao we moved out of the most expensive states to live in Michigan and I love this state to death.... my Hubby from California and I am from Alaska, those two states are expensive as Heck.... I've lived in Michigan for over 2 decades.... me and my hubby are considered Yoopers :)
Other 9 months out of the year lol depends on where you live in Michigan. I live in the northern part of the state where winter is 6-8 months it's cold from mid October through mid May and for me I love it but it's not for everyone so keep that in mind.
A comment about home prices; you were focused on SE Michigan, which is more expensive. However, there are a lot of cities that are much less expensive. I grew up in the Detroit area, but have lived in the Lansing area over 30 years. Capital of Michigan, MSU in East Lansing, lots to do, and way less expensive.
There are def less expensive cities outside of SE Michigan. Lansing, Battle Creek, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Alpena, ect... Job markets are also a big consideration to take into account.

Go west in the summer Holland, Grand Haven and Pentwater. Awesome beachs beautiful towns and NO salt water and NO sharks.
It's middle October and it's sunny and 70-80 degrees the next several days! The weather here is perfect from May to November.
4 seasons
For those getting use to the winter if you put ur feet in plastic bags before you put ur shoes on. Helps keep the dogs from freezing. 😊
Solid advice!!! keeps em dry too.
@@TRULIVINGMICHIGAN unless you have been walking for past a hour in a blizzard. I love walking in the winter. I'm a tad crazy.
I talk to a lot of people from all over the country and everyone says the same thing about where they live. I guess the grass is always greener…
I prefer living in the very northern Detroit suburbs. Beautiful starry skies and big yards. Tons of lakes, rivers, and trails. Cute downtowns. No traffic. Much closer to up north. Cheaper homes. It's pretty perfect really.
I live in Ludington and we have an awesome charter fishing industry here, as well as some great disc golf courses.
I have played Disc Golf a few times. Which course is the best in Ludington?
@@TRULIVINGMICHIGAN Beauty at Mason County Park.
The Michigan weather is probably to most mild in the USA. If you live in the SE corner you only get "snow storms" of 2" at a time. The local media blows the weather way out of proportion. In addition we don't get hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, severe droughts or many tornadoes.
I approve this message 👏
Really cute! Trying to keep how great life is here a secret!
Oops! Did I spill the beans
Born in Muskegon and now living with the Manistee National Forest surrounding us, we love Michigan. Not crazy about our current Governor!
Yea, she’s a real interesting one
Just wanted you to know about some bad with the good.😊
Lifetime Michigander here. . . Love my home state! I adore that we have four seasons and so much culture in one state ❤️
I agree! I love Michigan, too.
I moved from Detroit to Mount Pleasant looking for a less hectic environment. I absolutely love it, and am going on my third year up here.
The coast line in Michigan is one of the best. How's Ecuador?
Yikes! Ecuador has gone from super nice to being overrun with violent gangs and crime.
If you're retired or close to it, how does $300 a month rent sound compared to Michigan?
It beats the hell out of living in your car.
I moved to Michigan from Virginia Beach best decision of my life
Welcome to Michigan!
Equal opportunity: show some Green with that maize and blue (and we listen to sports while we fish!!) good video!
No hate for our Green and White friends! Thanks
I beg to differ, I spent 26 years in Michigan and there are many, many amazing places from Holland to Port Huron and everything south!
Did you watch my video?
DON'T LET EM KNOW! SHHHH! Haha! I LOVE MICHIGAN, literal Third Coast. We get an amazing spread of all the seasons. As an outdoors person, it's amazing, I can literally take my boat 1 mile in any direction, and drop into a lake.
Totally agree, gotta love those coney's!
Just wish it wasn't a blue state but been living here all my life I love it
Winter socializing is done in bowling alleys. The most bowling alleys per capita in the Detroit area.
Love this. We used to go to the bowling alley as a teenager just to meet up with our friends when we didn't have cell phones.
Lived in Muskegon for 8 years some of my best memories
Welkom to Holland the first two weeks of May for Tulip Time! We also have the only authentic, working Dutch Windmill in the entire country.
Beautiful thing
Everything you said at the beginning of the video is true. I quote a famous Politician who noted in the last 3-years " Don't Come", "Don't Come"
LOL
Born and raised in the Upper Peninsula.
Recently moved back to Michigan after a short stint in Ohio.
Clare county is now my home and will never leave this state again. 😎🍻
Lived in Michigan practically my whole life. The friendliest people in the World. Housing is relatively cheap. The beauty/ scenery is the best. If you are bored, that's your own fault. We are sensiable, down to earth, slightly old fashioned folks. We believe in family, home, church & Country. Do not come here expecting to make a big splash. You may be put in your place real quick. We would love for you to come check us out.
Congratulations. You're one and done.
Thank you!
Been I Michigan all my life. I love it!
Agreed 👍
You had me at first! I was “offended”! Ha ha! It’s beautiful here!
We do interior remodeling during winter months or I work on car projects to get ready for next summer months.
I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life. It’s a great state but our winters get old. The lack of sun is way worse than the cold and snow. When I retire I hope to leave the state to go south for three or four months of the year. The fall and summers are absolutely beautiful and there are plenty of things to do here.
I feel you
The snowbird lifestyle! Best of both worlds
depends on where you are in Michigan...
I’ve been through a lot of states that have small towns with little to no restaurant options. That’s not a Michigan thing. That’s small town USA.
Those are amazing spots! I’ll have to add them to my next video.
Sweater weather is winter. It's 9 months of Winter leaves changing colors happen to soon with way to many months of nothing.
9 months is a little extreme don’t you think?
@@TRULIVINGMICHIGAN no spring and fall are cold and 🌧️ I have seen snow in October and May in the Detroit area.
Me and my wife are empty nesters as of this year and will be selling our home in U.P Michigan. don't know if we'll find a better place to live but we're going travel and look for a while.
Enjoy the travel. Good luck 👍
Car insurance is about the most expensive in the States. The roads are exactly like the old washboards used pre washing machine.
There is no better place to live than northern Michigan. No huricans no sharks no bull shit. Just good living.
We are wanting to move to the Baycity area by May of next year
Nice! Reach out, we'd love to help. 734.746.5001 or info@trulivingroup.com
You guys are still getting snow?
Barely, but yes
It's actually us michiganders who spread the lies🫢🤫
No one ever show the new skyline (Hudson,Gordie Howe) etc.
I got you. Just recorded that in my drone this week. Keep an eye out for the Detroit Neighborhood series coming soon.
ooooh Buddy....
Hey Yooper! Troll here 🤣
Other 9 months out of the year lol depends on where you live in Michigan. I live in the northern part of the state where winter is 6-8 months it's cold from mid October through mid May and for me I love it but it's not for everyone so keep that in mind.
Listen, if you never heard of “Cuffing Season” then you will not be appropriately prepared to survive the winter blues here. 😂
Don't forget Motor City Comic Con, one of the largest comic conventions in the country.
The weather is horrendous
Depends on how you look at it. If you love winter sports then it can be a lot of fun
I live in a charter township northern area and we have over million dollar homes and houses with 6 to 8 car garages.
There’s some big homes there for sure!
