But did the majority really vote for this gov? Hard to believe these narcissist types are actually selected by the people to represent them. Even if they are able to deceive people to get 1 term, the next term they would be out. Either the majority genuinely loves redistribution of their earnings through super high taxes, economic decline, and more controlling government, or there is a flaw in the tallying and the verifying of the actual votes by the registered voters. There is also a third possible explanation. When a states govt employees reach such a magnitude that they outweigh the private industry workers and farmers, then those on the take, large masses of publicly tax paid govt and education workers, will vote in such a way to maintain their positions and lifetime benefits even at the slow destruction of the communities around them.

Also, property taxes here are very low compared to NY. We save $500 a month in taxes and have a bigger home and double the land here. You have more freedom to do things here that back in NY are so difficult and expensive to do. 2nd Amendment Rights are encouraged in Michigan. Lower Sales Tax here. And what we like a lot, is not dealing with 7 foot blizzards off Lake Erie. So winter in Mid- Michigan is mild compared to Western New York

I love Michigan. Been here my whole life. The weather is the best (I love having 4 seasons). The topography is very diverse, from flat farm land to rolling hills, to miles of sandy beaches to trout streams, wetlands and small secluded inland lakes to the Great Lakes boating and fishing, deer hunting, duck hunting, ATV and snowmobile trails, etc.. And don’t forget the mountainous western Upper Peninsula where there are tons of lakes and waterfalls. I’m a civil engineer in the Detroit area so I’ve done very well here owning my own company. But we do not have enough skilled construction trades. It’s a great place to get a job if you are in the trades. It’s also a great place to retire. We decided to just stay here when we retire in a few years. We have a house in the suburbs and one in the western U. P. I love being able to go kayaking or bike riding at Stony Creek Lake just a 20 minute drive from our house in Macomb. Michigan has tons of great parks. From catching lake trout in Lake Superior to walleye on Lake Erie to the awesome museums in Detroit, Michigans got it all.

Vermont is for liberal retirees and urbanites from the Boston and New York metropolitan areas who like to go Leaf peeping in the Autumn and ski on the low mountains with their icy slopes.
Property is expensive and usually well-maintained which gives excuses for property taxes to be higher than is often found in rural areas.
There isn't much industry or commercial activity, reportedly at not even as much as in New Hampshire, and there aren't very many jobs or jobs that pay well at all... although I'm sure that Vermont has its share of telecommuters.
Expensive housing, relatively high taxes, high costs, and a small job market seems to characterize the lovely state of Vermont. You might find people living there permanently who also have homes in North Carolina or Florida.

Michigan is a special place! 380 million years ago it was an inland sea, 12,000 years ago during the last ice age the ice was a mile thick until the glaciers melted and where left with the great lakes and all inner lakes! FYI all the sea salt is settled to the bottom of what is now lake MI and lake Huron, which is why we mine salt under those lakes today, plus all this nature here! Every state has good and bad parts!

Grew up in Mi (Saginaw Bay Area), moved to Grand Rapids for college, then to LA, then Denver, and started my business in Hawaii. Because of my business, I can live anywhere and I chose to come back to Mi - first to the Detroit area to experience the rebirth of that city and now in Traverse City.
For me, it’s hard to beat the bang for the buck value. The people are awesome, great sports teams, and the summer can’t be beat anywhere (the lakes are amazing). Winters do suck sometimes, but that’s what Florida is for haha.

The truth is that people rarely leave anywhere if there is a lot of economic prosperity. If you are living phat, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference where you do it, the question then becomes, why should I leave? The idea that some people in a given field leave because there are jobs elsewhere is true, but that should make ZERO difference on average. People accept jobs out of state in the industry they are trained for or experienced in because it pays better relative to the cost of living. Some will get shuffled around, but if everything else is the same the net effect is zero change.
People leave their State almost exclusively (on a net basis) due to economics. Michigan is not well run, that's our problem and it's more of a Mayor problem than a State problem actually. Don't tell me it's weather, there are states with far worse weather, that are not even as close to as beautiful as Michigan, where they have added population. Go look at the list of states that added population and trust me, lots of them are not even close to being as "Nice" of a place to live.
I've lived all over the country and talked to so many people, yes some will say they love their state because of XY or Z, but almost everyone who moves to a new state does so because of opportunity, for one, just leaving your family support structure behind is hard, you don't often see people leave that security based on weather that they grew up with.

You forgot to mention the fact that Michigan has one of the highest car insurance rates in the US! They have pip added to every car insurance policy. Which adds around $50+ to every policy every month. Unless you can prove you have health insurance, your car insurance has to cover you and everyone that's involved in a car accident. This is because of the health companies lobbying to get this added on to every policy! So they don't have to pay for uninsured drivers!

Detroit, Saginaw, Flint, Grand Rapids all have high rates of uninsured accidents today. What you wrote is pure made lies!!!

I grew up in Niles, Michigan. It was the ideal place to live in the 60s, when I was a kid. The state was well run back then, and Michigan roads were the best in the nation. The city of Niles was a small town of about 12,000 people in the southeast corner of Berrien County that was in the southwest corner of the Lower Peninsula. We had 5 major industrial employers located in Niles and the neighboring town of Buchanan. We also had other smaller towns ten minutes away in any direction. The closest larger city was South Bend, Indiana, just 13 miles to the south. There were plenty inland lakes close by in any direction. Lake Michigan beaches were just a thirty minute drive away. If you lived in Niles, you probably owner a boat. Not only that, but snowmobiles, skis, and sleads were common winter equipment in your garage. Downtown Niles was always active with shoppers. The city had great schools and a fantastic summer parks program for the kids. The only disadvantage Niles had for those not into winter sports was the lake affect snow coming off Lake Michigan. Six to eight inch snow storms are common in the Niles area. Now that all is gone, the manufacturing has left. The roads in Michigan are among the worse in the country. But the weather still remains in the area. Winter snow, temperatures affected by Lake Michigan leaving the average summer temperature a bit cooler and the average winter temperatures a bit warmer then the rest of the northern Midwest.
