Ham, turkey, and swiss cheese was only way I've seen them for past 50 years

I as well have seen turkey incorporated in a Monte Cristo sandwich.
The best place I got a Monte Cristo sandwich was at the Blue Danube Restaurant at the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. They had 3 slices of bread, remove the crust, add mayo, gouda cheese, 2 slices honey ham, 2 slices honey turkey, fried on both sides in butter and served with a side of strawberry or grape jelly,

And now you have a new idea to try!
In Texas you can't make chili with beans, and some use swiss chard in oysters Rockefeller instead of spinach, some put carrots in New England clam chowder.
Cooking is not a recipe for a nuclear bomb where there is only one path. Cooking allows variation. Sometimes variation improves an original recipe. Nobody in 2024 is so rigid that you can ONLY use the ingredients "I am comfortable with". You don't like gouda? DON'T USE GOUDA! Actually I think it says a lot about people trying new ways to interpret a recipe. Being locked in the only one you have ever had shows a lack of expression of a cuisine. Very robotic. Cooking can be artful, unless you limit yourself.

@@drk321 I agree totally. Trying different ingredients and varying an original recipe can at times improve a good meal to a great meal. I sprinkle powdered sugar on my Monte Cristo sandwich, I add a little Burgundy wine to my homemade spaghetti sauce, and three different cheeses to a macaroni and cheese dish. Yes, just following a recipe can be good but one can make a recipe "great" with experimentation. I've ruined a few meals by experimentation but it is a learning experience what pairs with what. Thanks for the encouragement to experiment more.

Croque Madame doesn't have any jam either. It's a Croque Monsieur with a poached egg.
If you went to France and asked where the jam was they'd slap you about and no sugar either. I've eaten plenty of these in France. I think you have some California version?
