  • As someone who is interested in candle making, I have watched a lot of candle making videos. This video is not like them at all. I tried to impart all of the technical information that I could while making the candle, but this resulted in over 30 minutes of footage.... for a channel called ten minutes long.... So needless to say there are a lot of speeded up bits and a lot of cuts and a few voice overs just to avoid there being a couple of minutes of silence while I stir the melting wax.
Anyway. There are a lot better candle making videos out there, so if you want to watch someone explain things perfectly and then make a perfect candle please do go and seek them out. That’s not what you’re getting in this video!
See since I’ve gotten into candle making, one thing I’ve learned is that wax is a bit temperamental. There are lots of different kinds of wax and they each behave differently. Some require a warm room in which to cure, some require a higher temperature to be achieved before being poured, some prefer a warm container to be poured into and the list goes on. Watching videos and reading comments it seems everyone had a few false starts and then found their forever wax and got on with it. I am totally not that person! I have been through a lot of different waxes and loads of different methods and tricks to try and get my candles to look perfect and it just doesn’t happen.
A lot of the time I see people making imperfect candles and then fixing them with a heat tool or something like that. I don’t make mine to sell, so it really doesn’t matter to me if my candles are imperfect. When lit do they not burn?! Spoiler - they do, they burn just fine no matter how much they’ve sunk or cracked in the drying process.
I kind of feel like I’ve been chasing perfection a bit on the candle front for a year now, not because I have a pathological need for them to look perfect, but because it’s something I do as a hobby so it’s nice to try out different things and to maybe one day get to a point where they’re not perfect as such, but that I’ve found my forever wax and I can count on it not to look too bad after a pour. I mean I was fine with the candle I made in the video. The top was lovely and smooth and while there were adhesion issues with the glass I think it just looks characterful. I don’t mind if something looks home made, I take pride in the fact that I made it myself.
Anyway see what I mean about the rambling?! So in this video I made a green candle using CS2 wax from Candle Shack, Evergreen solid dye from 4 Candles, a scent called Bois from Candle Shack a Stablio 14 wick (available from many candle suppliers) and an ex jar of Colmans mint sauce 🙂. It was chaotic and messy, but I enjoyed it, I hope you do too.
