  • I’ve spent a lot of time shooting Nazare and now I’m in the water shooting off a jetski including that definitive unique water angle. So here i concentrate on some of my best paddle waves shot this year. With the best surfers who actually put their courage to the test to paddle into some of the biggest waves on the planet with some serious consequences.
Here’s Part 1 of a three part series. Enjoy!
Special thanks to Dino Carmo and Diogo Pedro
from Nazare Jet.. for putting me in the spot to get the shot.

Dropping down a steep slope of a moving mountain all the while being pursued by a crushing Niagara Falls chasing you! Unreal!! 🌊

Love that you used normal speed for most of this film. It gives a far greater insight into how challenging this wave actually is. Most slow-mo films make it look almost easy & dreamy. Great Stuff Tim 👍 Always highest quality films.

I always wondered how many surfers have to be taken to the ER on a daily basis? I just can’t imagine the beating these surfers take with tons of water landing on top of you and not coming out with broken ribs, back etc. just watching these videos is amazing but have to give all surfers credit where credit is due. Definitely takes courage and of course tons of skill to surf these waves. And can’t forget those on the wave runners who risk their lives.

Single biggest error after making the take off seems to be the survival instinct to get to the bottom.
but there's no juice down there and they get swamped. The guys that make it go look for the wall a soon as the free fall is done.
Mad props to anyone willing to step into that, regardless.

Mr. Bonython: I have waited all my life to see a wave this size. Since my wife was an American school teacher (now retired), we just couldn’t leave for a month in the winter to go see the Pipe Masters or “the Eddie”.
We are now going. I picked the last week of January and the first week of February to visit “The Seven Mile Miracle”. What are my chances? Will I see something decent at Sunset, Pipe, Waimea, etc. Any other pointers? Many thanks to you, and all the best in 2023.

This is great, love seeing the wipeouts. What would be interesting is hearing about what the surfers experience in a wipeout the size of these giant waves. I am curious if they ever feel like they are going to die or the impact of the wave hitting them causes blackout or excruciating pain. Not seen more than a handful of videos with surfers talking about the experience. Do surfers think there is a safe way to have a successful wipeout? One guy on the video just jumps off which is ok because your body goes under the whitewash whereas just jumping flat you get sucked up into the roll of the wave.

For all you that write how in awe you are of this Naz video, do yourself a favor and watch the first scene of "Maps of Home" featuring JJ Florence. Waves that are arguably faster, more hollow, more difficult - surfed correctly by qualified watermen. Then tell me why half the people in this Naz video paddled out. Tell me if you still think this is the pinnacle of surfing or if it's just a bunch of guys who really should be counting their blessings that they made it out alive. Some of these folks were driven by ego, not skill.

Awesome footage and waves! I'm pretty sure the surfer at 2:11mins is @sebas_dnegro maybe check on him to get the right credit, at least on the description... It'd be unfair otherwise since he's putting his courage to the test to paddle into some of the biggest waves on the planet with some serious consequences.
