I've spent the last few days listening to the Tears for Fears and Police super deluxe editions on long haul drives, so this is a very welcome addition to the rotation.
Because its an outtake that was leaked (not released by Radiohead themselfs) itll never be on spotify. Same as every track on this compilation. Do the same I and just get an MP3 player.
they do but at the same time they are two songs that are like screaming for the drums to be removed lol. its an interesting peek into songwriting in general you have an idea and bring it to the band and the instinct is always okay lets do the bass the drums figure it out. and then sometimes it just has to be torn apart
insane thing i just realized listening to this... i'm an American student doing a study abroad program in Prague, and the school placed me in an apartment which is next to the metro stop "Jiriho z Podebrad" which I use every day to get to class. Listening through this version of "A Reminder", I just realized I recognize that voice: "pristi stanice, Jiriho z Podebrad" because I've been hearing it literally every day for the past 3 months. I've been a huge Radiohead fan my entire life and have obviously been listening to them while I'm hear, it's just crazy to me to think that Thom recorded this song I love so much on the very same train I take every day, at the very same station in the very same city. Just thought that was cool to share
This video is amazing. I can't believe Last Flowers and Motion Picture Soundtrack already sounded this good at that time. I prefer this version, with the guitars, than the ones that came out later. Wish they were on spotify :(
The alternate outro for paranoid android has this psychedelic prog rock feel, which I actually like more, it would have flowed really well into subterranean homesick alien
Ever since I discovered the original outro to Paranoid Android I've loved riffing to it on my guitar (it's the same three chords from the "what's that" section but strummed instead of picked). It's a really ominous outro that reminds me a lot of I Want You (She's So Heavy).
Brother they are an excellent rock band traditionally haha. They purposefully shifted gears and didn't go the conventional rout which I actually respect. Like the final version of Motion Picture is much better than it is here in my opinion.
i thought the same thing when i saw this, makes you wonder how much more unreleased stuff has in the catalogue because i would love to see more like this
The notebook from the OKNOTOK boxset pretty much proves that “Get Around” IS Dogwander. These are the lyrics I was able to put together using the Dogwander excerpt from the notebook as a guide: (?) (?) (?) (?) All the dreams in my head After what you said On a mountain side Dreaming like a, smiling like a baby, alright Get around, get around Get around, round, round, get around Get around, get around, yeah Bring on another take Better than another cake A wobble in your tyres And bugbean, I know what I’m gonna do Holiday cataract And we’re nailed to the tracks And a bad wind blew
As good as the normal version is, I really really wished they used this original, much noisier ending for Karma Police. It kinda fits the whole theme of someone completely devolving and it gives me chills every time, especially the end with Thom yelling “This is what you’ll get.” I think this ending combined with the loud ringing at the end of the original would genuinely be my favorite ending to a Radiohead song ever.
I think this ending of Karma Police adds a whole lot of context. Thom has said that it is a song against bosses (hence the payroll reference). The official version has "phew for a minute there I lost myself" sung kind of dispassionately. The "this is what you get when you mess with me" was averted, and the "I lost myself" is a sigh of relief. I think this version goes down the other branch where this person has some violent fantasies from having been messed with, possibly by their boss, and loses themselves and does something very violent. Hence the repeated yelled "this is what you get". It is acting on revenge. There is an alternate start for the song in this leak, where you hear a woman/women laughing, probably to set the mood for the violent climax.
The actual clip was a cartoon called Dynomutt, Dog Wonder from the 70’s. it was later used as the working title for The National Anthem. You can see pictures of a lyric sheet if you google Radiohead Dogwander.
Motion Picture Soundtrack was like a perfect blend between Let Down and the true Motion Picture Soundtrack from Kid A, although I think the Kid A version is the best
I will absolutely never understand how you can spend hours if not days finalyzing an amazing song, a potential classic and finally deciding not to release it. I am talking about Man-o war.
38:42 SHA is in my top 3, but this alternate version sounds amazing, in a different way. I wish there were a full song of this earlier one Edit: the loud outro to Karma Police is epic. this band can do anything
Last Flowers off Disk 2 of is one of my fav b-sides by them ♥️ That soundcheck from 97 is great as well. Hearing it in a full band performance is amazing! The Rhodes iirc? In the 1st half and then the synth? in last part of the song are both very nice Also the thumping bass and drums, a really lovely “la la la” part that I haven’t heard before And great guitar tone as any song from OKC. I’ll definitely still be listening to the Disk 2 version but this is an awesome version that I’ll be listening to as well 👍
Damn i love that intro for karma police, that version could be the album version while the single/music video version could be the one without the laugh 😅
Love the strings on Man of War.... it's so Bond-esque. Surely there's a version of Nude (Big Ideas) from this era. They played it on tour in 98 and I much preferred the melodic full band version with glockenspiel and organ than the comparatively sparse and weak version on In Rainbows
There's a version from Feb 1996 included on the OKNOTOK White Cassette, though it sounds a little different to the later 98 version and has very different lyrics. The studio notes also suggest (but don't confirm) they tried recording it again during the main OKC sessions but we don't know what came of that. It might not have worked out.
@@nirodha60 The minidiscs are not available. And almost nothing here is in the minidisc. I can't vouch for Man Of War and its variations, same with Lift, but most of this has never been heard before.
