I grew up on rap and metal.

Was a fan of slipknot back then still now.
Elitism is common in the rock community.
When metal branched off into sub genres metal core party metal emocore etc people like cory did the same shit "oh thats not real metal" so this was expected.
Metal elitist where shit then when the genre was popping they are worse now since metal isnt as popular now and you have rappers doing rock or metal shit pos elitist gonna hate

It's simple. Slipknot has earned their respect. They've paid their dues and the fans know it. Then when some guy who's more known for a whole other genre jumps over into rock and has the audacity to insult "on stage" a hugely popular band in the genre. It should be expected that he's going to get a lot of hate over it. Also, with other musicians that have gotten into beefs with Cory, it never works out for them. MGK doesn't have anything against Slipknot to be exact but Corey from Slipknot. Corey Taylor did a verse for 'TIckets To My Downfall'. It wasn't a good enough verse so MGK decided not to add it. Corey for that, turned out to say something which wasn't quite pleasant-? maybe was a little toxic. Thus, MGK decided to talk back on Corey on-stage in one of his performances. MGK's tweet on corey was
"corey did a verse for a song on tickets to my downfall album, it was fucking terrible, so i didn’t use it.
he got mad about it, and talked shit to a magazine about the same album he was almost on.
      yalls stories are all off.
      just admit he’s bitter."
It's simply a neutral situation and neither MGK or Corey should have the blame. Although Slipknot's fans overdrove the fact that MGK spoke of Corey and turned it out to look as 'a new beef between slipknot and mgk'.

Rock community member here: In spite of being someone who also likes hip hop, I didn't really give much MGK's stuff much attention, his pop punk album was cool and that put him on the map for me, listening to his older stuff I tended to like the fusing of rock elements into some of his hip hop stuff. I like that he has some attitude and is bringing that into rock. He's right about the comfy shoes...
The general vibe amongst my rock friends is that he's cool but he shouldn't be disrespecting established names. Having said that though, fans of pop punk are not necessarily fans of Slipknot. The two genres aren't worlds apart in the grand scheme of things but within Rock/Metal as an umbrella, it's like comparing modern Trap and 90's Boom-Bap. So tbh, the overlap isn't really there other than the fact that all these bands get chucked on to the same festival because they're all 'rock'. So if some metalheads wanna go boo him at a festival, probably ain't an indication of his popularity in the genre he's actually making.

I think MGK finally marks my "too old to understand current music" phase. Even if I'm not a fan of something, I can appreciate the effort and skill that's gone into it. If I don't know anything about the techniques of a genre (how to play the instrument etc.), then I won't criticise it beyond my own taste (It took me a while to get over that mindset. I used to have that old "Dance Music is just pressing play" Metalhead mindset).
I can't comment on his rap career because I don't know the first thing about writing rap lyrics, beats or anything else that goes into making a rap song. There are rap songs that I like and those that I dislike and that's where it ends. But his punk rock career? I don't get it. He can't sing, he can't play guitar...I know that, ironically, these are criticisms leveled at punk when it first started. But that is also kinda my point. The punk music that he's putting out has not only been done before, only better, but there are even current artists putting out similar stuff but done better. He's even got a member of BLINK 18FRIKKIN2 playing with him, yet what he's doing sounds, to me and my old fogey ears, derivative and unoriginal and played poorly to boot!
I am finally far too old to understand the music of the youth. AND NOW I FIND OUT THAT HE'S ONLY 9 YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME?!? WE'RE THE SAME GENERATION! Time to put me out to pasture...

It was a natural transition, especially taking in count that he’s friends with Yungblud, Iann Dior and Travis Barker. They’re all kinda emo. But yeah, he needs to control everything he says and does. I like your point about people's aversion to (hip hop artists or rappers) changing genres. As a rock/ metal guy, I think it's pretty cool when guys trade out loops and samples for more organic sounds, and visa versa. It's one of the things that I've heard people at concerts talk about, the lack of "musicianship" in those genres (particularly). There's an argument to be made about the artists motives, but since we can't look into peoples minds, I accept at face value that these artists are trying new forms of creativity. We call them artists for a reason...

In reference to rock music fans- it really depends on the age of the fan. There were actually polls done in several groups im in about him (maybe the mods were trying to figure out the right angle to approach mgk with). They asked a total of 15k ppl across 3 different but related groups their opinions.
Roughly 60% of millenials think he is cringey or a downright poser. The remaining 40% either don't know him or like him. The portion that liked him (can't remember the %) often had a child who was a fan of MGK.
As for Gen Z members of the groups (which were the smallest age group represented in the groups), a little over 50% consider themselves a fan of his. The remaining 50% either don't have an opinion (millenials werent as neutral) or don't like him (and those that don't like him feel that way for a reason that is sometimes not music related. Millenials tended not go like him for music issues. Gen Z would bring up social issues that deemed him "problematic").
Gen X- something like 15% viewed him favorably. That 15% often had children who were fans of MGK. The rest didn't know him or viewed him comically- they didn't think he was serious.

I really liked MGK when he first came out, his earliest stuff is my favorite. I think the fame went to his head, which sucks because he can make good music and be someone to draw inspiration from if he wants to. That said, there was absolutely no reason for him to run his mouth about Slipknot. I never listened to their type of music, but I have respect for their success.... MGK really screwed up doing that.
In all I hope he grows up a bit and gets his life and career together. Eh, it is what it is.

Ok… I was born in 76, yes I’m Gen X. I’ve been fortunate to grow up listening to some of the greatest artists of all time, Rock, Rap, Hip-Hop you name it. Back in day everyone had their own sound and they made their name by putting out badass music. We didn’t have social media where we could puss out from a thousand miles away. We lived in stores like Musicland and we went to live shows every weekend. I’m white and never felt out of place going to see Snoop or Dre, and went with black friends to see Ozzy. Back then guys wanted to collaborate and make kickass music. Sure there was beef but the music was always great. MGK is trying to be relevant by attacking the giants. It turns heads for a little while but at the end of the day it’s the music that fills the seats. I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin. We have an annual music festival called SummerFest, we have an iconic intimate venue called the Rave / Eagles ballroom. Rage against the Machine played at Alpine Valley. I love it all, and I hate MGK. If he wants to be a god he needs to make music and that’s it

I am similar age as you and also grew up in the walkman days and in the Milwaukee Area. Love the RAVE! Trading and copying tapes was a thing back then. It was how music was shared and enjoyed with people. The world changed. Music is now so easily gathered, curated and even pushed down your throat. No need to go searching for it at music stores, at yes, physical brick and mortar locations. There was so much excitement when you picked up a new album, listen to it and then want to share it with your friends that is GONE!
As for MGK. I didn't really learn about him until the Eminem beef which I can say I was rather grossly engaged in. I found it amusing similarly to the east coast west coast beef. I was thinking "Oh are we going to get some new music with shots fired all each other for a year years?" Part of me was hoping so. Though I personally think M won the battle I did like Rap Devil. Its catchy and has some good elements. To have the stones to push something you Eminem like that when everyone knows not to is in my opinion pretty punk / metal move.
Now with him moving to new genres. He wants to make money. Period. It isn't about the art for him I don't think. You can see it. He's jumped artistic lines on multiple occasions. Now for artists to do that there is nothing wrong per say but it seems fake and artificial from my viewpoint. I listened to his older rap stuff and his new pop punk blink 182 wannabe stuff and its stale. It seems forced and fake. He isn't authentic. Though he might have some punkish ways to his personality but I don't think he understands the premise.
In my thoughts he only wants attention. Media whore. Why else make these changes? If he loved rap he wouldn't have switched. Fan or not I think many "Music" fans will agree he isn't doing anything special. He has hints of glimmer from time to time but in 20 years will anyone be talking about him musically?

Never been a big fan of rap, but I could get behind Lil Wayne's lil rock moment. It was pretty fun, and it never felt like he was trying to fully be a rockstar. It was mostly a homage to what a good number of rappers and most artists are after, the mega fame to the point of not having to worry about anything. Everyone knows the saying 'sex drugs and rock n roll'.
As far as MGK, he honestly feels like he should have been rock to begin with. When I first heard the name Machine Gun Kelly I thought it was a new rock band.

I listen to both genres casually. I disagree that the interview remarks were "obviously sarcastic." You don't call people motherfuckers if you're making a sarcastic joke, and it comes off as genuine criticism. I'd also imagine that the "failed rap artist" comments are more likely caused by the fact that Taylor was probably only familiar with the most mainstream rappers. MGK's rap albums are decent, but I have a bunch of hip hop heads as friends, and NOBODY was talking about him before the Eminem diss track. He's no Kendrick or Cole. If you put yourself in Taylor's very comfy shoes, MGK looks like a rapper that fell out of the mainstream a while ago, and only got back in by starting shit with one of the best. And to top it off, the overall consensus was that he lost the fight he started. So you're Corey Taylor, and you see that artist start shit, lose, then drop an album in a different genre and immediately start criticizing the mainstays of that genre. It's easy to see why Taylor might be a bit prickly about it, and why he would consider MGK a failed rap artist.
