Let's Talk About Lil Nas X..

- Lil Nas X is one of the most polarizing pop icons we have seen in the past few years. The "Old Town Road" rapper is consistently shrouded with controversy over every little thing he does. But is it justified? Is it all part of a big marketing ploy? Or does the "controversy" say more about the people that he offends more than the actions themselves..

When it comes to anything about Lil Nas X, I think it's just him being himself, but at the same time, the marketing/controversies that he finds himself in, is because he knows what will get clicks, attention, etc.
Much like anything else, marketing is essentially taking your personality and "dialing it up to 11"
the thing about him is that he doesnt end up in controversies, he creates the controversies because he is a marketing genius.

One thing about lil nas is that he understands the impact of social media
Social media is awful but he is a marketing genius

I feel like for the most part he really just being himself and his personality just so happens to be so polarizing that it’s a great marketing tool. I think he started doing him realized it worked and just kept doing it! Legend in my opinion they never let gay artist get this big let alone a gay black man
I’m not usually a rap fan, but I love Lil Nas. His music slaps, he a king at using the internet for marketing advantages, and he’s hilarious to boot. The dude lives to piss off the homophobes and I am here for it!
Hes not a rapper hes a pop stat

well because he's a pop artist
Its sad that he sold his soul to satan
What does this have to do with making "homophobes mad" everyone who is gay doesn't worship the devil so that's irrelevant. He only does the stuff he does cause he sold his soul and the contract he signed made him have to do this.
He probably was never even actually gay and just had to do this for the contract.
The music video was of the bible verse where satan was kicked out of heaven and the alien creature made them eat the fruit and the satan shoes actually have that bible verse on it.
It's ridiculous to call criticism as homophobia, i wouldn't want my kids to watch a music video of someone having sex with the devil or some alien, regardless of the genders of people involved
ok... but if the the main demographic of his more recent music is an older audience why does that matter? sure kids loved old town road and he used that to gain a foothold in the industry, but its not like that means he should be forced to make kid friendly art from then on

I really liked most of the songs on the Montero album but I still see how much more potential he has.
One word . DEMON
@6:22 I have to disagree on the outcry of heavy metal bands with Satanic imagery. The late 80s and 90s were highlighted by “satanic panic” and there were whole movements trying to censor these bands because parents thought they were encouraging kids to perform Satanic rituals. Any kid who liked that kind of music back in the day were considered freaks, outcasts, etc. Most famously I think is the West Memphis 3 case, especially Damien Echols being the ringleader and accused of murdering three boys in a satanic ritual because he liked heavy metal. These guys spent decades in prison for a crime they didn’t commit.
What he is doing is important for gay black men and even gay men that want to go high in the music industry, I just found out he was originally Twitter famous and it’s interesting how he came from that to what he’s going for now. Always look forward to his music and what he has to say as an artist.
To be honest, I don't like the fact that some people don't like him just because of his sexuality. Its just my opinion because I always believed that someone's personality is what matters the most, not his sexuality or race.....
im comparing anything but, lil nas x has the same thing going on when madonna came out in the 80’s and 90’s; super controversial, she took her art seriously and was unapologetic
None of those metal bands and gay artists ever went touring through elementary schools and appearing on kids shows before blindsiding them with some intense imagery.
The music on the album is great, but he is still underrated hence lower initial album sales, but the Album will go multi times platinum…stream before the album drops doesn’t count towards first week album sales!
Love Lil Nas X, & the album "MONTERO" is the best of the year - _EVERY_ song is a winner! Haven't said that about an entire album in years...!!! Regardless of what you think of the gimmicky marketing & promoting... this is a serious album & LNX is a serious artist! ... 💪 🔥 🎧 🧡 👏 ...

Lil Nas X to me kinda just cemented a shift in the music industry. For most of my life, I got the impression that artists pick one over arching genre to stay in, with the most diversity of their music being sub genres (my notable example would be the rock genre. Many artist dont leave THAT label, but may shift around from metal, hard rock, alternative, and usually the career ender would be pop rock or going "full pop"). Lil Nas X, even though I can't vibe with his music, is still kinda inspiring. He makes the music he wants to. Him and artist before him like the Gorillaz started changing the idea that an artist is locked into a genre and should only be focused on that kind of music to cater to one group of fans. And on top of that he shows his dedication with the intensity of his music videos. They are full budget, well recorded videos. Not just lyric videos to push the song out. Ultimately, I'm just glad the dude is doing what he wants to. That's what matters in the end.
Why are people acting like he's the first gay and drag queen to sing lol
So very this, Lady Gaga was the first
And I just went through the video fully hydrated 😁
I love this informative video since I don't do much social media but listen to music. Really enjoyed Montero. He knows how to engage media/ fans in his favor, but then he pumps out great tracks and prove naysayers wrong.
He took his ability to masterfully troll people and successfully converted it into marketing. That’s impressive no matter how you feel about him.
This dude just winning and he ain’t stopping
Best marketer ever AND he's forcing the industry forward for the LGBTQ+ community whether people like it or not, and it's about time too!
Um wtf do you mean. Gay people have been in the music industry for decades and have been extremely popular. Just look at fucking Freddie Mercury. The dude is just taking advantage of a pride wave and its unbelievably obvious. But okay go ahead and call the guy peddling lustful music to children a marketing genius. Go off I guess.
My thing is he sings about substance abuse and sex in old town road. I think he's the perfect storm of being talented enough to pull off being outrageous. Everyone else who has tried it in my opinion is lacking the talent or charisma to make it work.
