    It's funny - this film has a reputation as an "oscar darling" film because of all the nominations it got, and the fact that it's about hollywood, but it really is a studio exec's _nightmare,_ when you think about it.
    It's a big-budget large-scope musical, _not_ based on an existing production, shot in the style of 50's cinemascope pictures, written and directed by a somewhat unknown writer-director, that ends with the romantic leads _not getting together._
    It took him years to get approval for a budget because everyone he pitched it to wanted to change the entire story.

      Mad respect to Damien Chazelle for not letting studio executives change his script. And he was right, it made more than 400 million dollars in theaters.

    You know you gotta watch "Whiplash" now.
    It was the movie that was made by the same director and writer, just before La La Land. Some argue it's even better.
    It was nominated for FIVE oscars and won three.
    I think you'll love it.

    For anyone confused about the ending, here is my interpretation.
    The whole final bit is a "what could have been" mainly from the perspective of Sebastian. We see that his music and his club brings him some joy, but above all he misses Mia and what they had together. He looks sad and beaten down, even after achieving what he THOUGHT would bring him joy. Mia has found another person to love after attaining her dream of acting, whereas Sebastian has not moved on. To me, it is a message of warning to those who sacrifice personal relationships to "follow their dreams", and that it may not bring you the happiness you thought.

    • @IamNinjaOfNinja
      @IamNinjaOfNinja 3 года назад +36

      i like to believe its actually both of them envisioning what would happen if they stayed together. so there was a mutual sadness when that dream scene ended

      It's an interesting aproach, I think this director has a tendencie for that particular message, you can even see it in whiplash, between the protagonist following his dream, and his maybe girlfriend stopping him in accomplishing those dreams ... is the final curtain that blinds the things that really matter in this life... Love

    • @congthanhvo4165
      @congthanhvo4165 3 года назад +8

      If Mia stayed with Sebastian, neither of them would have achieved their dreams, and everyday would have been like hell. I think the lesson here is you must sacrifice one thing, your love or your career.

    • @RShadow12
      @RShadow12 2 года назад +2

      @@IamNinjaOfNinja Agreed, I feel that the whole dream sequence is something that Sebastian is conveying to Mia through their song (the one he’s purposely playing), and Mia because of that connection, receives and envisions that sequence as well. It’s a shared experience.

      @@IamNinjaOfNinja Yet I think it’s Mia’s triumph in choosing to find a better love and she has it now in her husband and they have their daughter. Even if they had no children, she valued freedom more.

    La La Land still gives me chills

    The ending tells u the story that if they made other choiches in life and chose love over carreer they would lived a more humble but happy life , so less succesfull but a loving familie , i think the message is if u whant somting in life u have to make a sacrifice , its very controversial whats the best outcome , succes and wealth and i gues also happyness , or everything the whole picture the "lala land" its very hard to explain the ending its more a feeling that i believe seems diferent for everyone its a scene that u reflect on in my opinion a masterpiece

      @@EmilyGloeggler7984both what are you talking about? it’s basically people come into our lives for either a season/year/decade but both went their separate ways. Mia became an actor and Sebastian Showed the people the Jazz he loves by owning a Club when he was playing a “modern” type of Jazz. when he wanted to preserve the Jazz he loved. The movie isn’t just about Mia 🤦🏻‍♂️ the movie is about both not one. remind it always takes two to Tango not just one

    You do not have to embrace change in music. Elvis wouldn't do well with hip hop.

      Change not in terms of genre of the music but change in terms of innovation within the genre that you play. It's always good hearing something outside of the box.
