  • This is a video I have wanted to make for a long time but did not have an appropriately dead car to jump. Today is the day!

Hi Tamara, Good tutorial on jumping a car. Don't worry about getting shocked with 12 volts or even 24 volts.

I would always make sure the good vehicle is running before connecting up. The dead battery could drag the good one down as well and you won’t be able to start it.

Be careful, I have seen some advanced electrical stuff get burned up on a jump. On some highly computerized cars , Lexus for instance.
But if you use a jump pack instead that will not happen.
    great video

Pretty much covered the big danger. Batteries create hydrogen, a spark at the wrong time can cause a battery to explode. Batteries also contain acid, making the explosion even less fun.
Also, good to point out about letting the dead battery charge. Granted, newer vehicles use smaller starters that draw much less current, but even at that, you cannot count on the average jumper cable to be able to carry enough current to start a car.
99% of "jumping" is you charging the dead battery just enough that the dead battery can start the car.
The wire is important, but it's the clamp that is usually the weak spot. If you can open the clamp with one hand, and your not Hulk Hogan, it's probably not a strong enough clamp. When I helped my Aunt jump start her vehicle, she couldn't open my clamps even with both hands.
Also not a bad idea to use a real battery charger if you can as soon as possible. Alternators aren't really made to fully charge dead batteries and you can even damage an alternator.
I would probably not use the word "neutral" and just stick with positive and negative since we are talking about DC current. I would even avoid "ground" as rare vehicles have used a positive ground. The old wives tale is that it can reduce rust.
Also, you can lick the cables and be fine. The danger is you have a lot of potential current. 100's of amps, sometimes over a 1,000. You can weld with a battery, so you have the danger of burns from flying molten metal if you are not careful.
And, I hesitate to mention this, but they do make "idiot proof" jumper cables. The have a relay box in the middle and they will automatically correct for polarity.
In the old days, when cars were made of metal, they would also say to make sure the cars aren't touching.
My "good" cables are two independent cables, so I can hook them up with more control(no dangling clamp). If you have a regular set with those connected wire pairs, don't be afraid to peel the clamps further apart so you have more room and can leave the "dangling" clamp somewhere safer, maybe even reaching the ground.

Nice lecture! Might you have one coming up on how to replace a thermostat? I already know how to do it but I'm sure that there's a lot of other people out there who could benefit by watching such a video. Also, I so happen to have a portable jump start device with a USB connection as well as a lamp. I can get everything to work but the jumper cables. No instructions were included. I guess that's what one gets sometimes from ordering things online.

Are you referring to a central air thermostat? If so, please check this out: Installing a Smart Thermostat - Things Even a Monkey Should Know ruclips.net/video/Rx1QErYgf1o/видео.html . If not, just ignore it. 😄
I have been checking out the portable chargers after posting this video and looks like a great thing to invest in! I like that yours has some bonus features, too!

Hi Tamara, you should look into a Schumacher battery jump pack! They’re the size of a tablet and will jump vehicles in below zero temperatures. Cost around 100$. I use it for situations where I don’t have another vehicle to use to jump my vehicle. Have a great day!

Thank you, I like it! Most of the jump packs I’ve seen are $200+. This is a great improvement!

Hi Tamara! Up North, where we get a lot of salt and brine solution spread on our roads to melt snow in the winter, in the fall, it's a good idea to put a little dielectric grease on the terminals of your battery. This will repel the moisture that can cause that green corrosion that can interfere with your battery's performance. Autozone has it handy up at the checkout counter in little dispenser packs for ninety- nine cents. Did I detect your hands shaking while you were hooking up those cables?😂

    • @MonkeysKnow
      @MonkeysKnow  3 года назад

😂 Why yes you did! I had to do a second shot because I had a huge POW of sparks the first time I connected the negative.
Good to know about the grease on the terminals! We don’t have to do that down south, but I wonder if it would help keep the terminals/connections from corroding.
