Star Trek V: Turbolift scene fixed. The worst scene from the worst film.

  • To say Star Trek V: The final frontier was a letdown is an understatement. After what became a great unplanned trilogy of Star Trek II, III, & IV the crew were set to have all new adventures with their brand new ship, the USS Enterprise 1701-A. The resulting story and execution was far from the standard set by its predecessors. They’re a lot of things to complain about the film. The lackluster story, poor special effects, the clearly reduced budget, but they’re are several continuity errors the standout. Most of all to me is the Turbolift scene. After breaking out of their own brig, Kirk, Spock and McCoy escape using an unused turbolift shaft. For some reason, probably because of director Bill Shatner the deck numbers go in the wrong directions. In any naval ship, and every other Enterprise, top level is deck 1 and the numbers grow larger towards the bottom. But in this film, for whatever reason they go off of a high rise building. They start their climb at the bottom of Deck 7 and end up somewhere above deck 78! Also 78 decks is over 3 times too many decks as their should for that ship. To that end I corrected the deck signage. I also upscaled it to 4K using machine learning with Topaz Lab’s Video Enhance AI. This will be the first of a series of scenes i’m correcting from the film.

      Partially fixed. There still needs to be horizontal movement, as there is no way to get from deck 19 to deck 1 in a single vertical pass. That being said,... the last number we saw was 6, so that answers some of that. But the only way it could work is if the turbolift shaft was inside the warp core LOL

      Just shows, however much you edit it you can't repair the work of a terrible director who can't remember "enter up" and "enter down". Unless it's the whole movie is secretly meant to be Shatner's ripoff of Spaceballs as one Internet reviewer has suggested

    Brilliant work! ST5 has always been my favorite of the Star Trek films, but I've still always been irked by scenes like this one. I've always felt that it deserved a "Special Edition" that corrects mistakes like this sequence. THANK YOU for making this happen so well!

  • @seankennedy18
    @seankennedy18 3 года назад +25

    First of all, it is by far not the worst film. Star Trek Insurrection, Star Trek Nemesis, Star Trek Into Darkness & Beyond.. some of the scenes in Star Trek 5 are some of the best scenes in All Star Trek movies.
    The scenes around the campfire with Kirk Spock and McCoy. The scene with McCoy and his father. The scene with Spock during his birth.
    You have to remember there was a writer strike a Teamster strike and shatner was not able to put the ending on the movie he wanted because industrial lights and magic wasn't available and a special effects company had to be fired because how badly they were doing with their special effects.
    They ran out of money after a horror shoot. Not Shatner's fault.
    In all honesty they could put his ending in the movie today using computer technology and since the series has made billions for Paramount pictures, they should do a Shatner directors cut with his ending as it was originally intended.

    A lot more work needs to be done on this movie to make it worthy, but man, this is an excellent start! And you can't help but wonder why the original scene wasn't like this. I'm still hoping that the studio will give Shatner a chance to do an official Director's Cut while he's still with us, but since they couldn't even be bothered to make a remastered Blu-ray of the TMP Director's Cut for the 40th anniversary I've just about given up hope. I guess it's going to be up to folks like you to show us here how STV could've looked

  • @uosdwiSrdewoH
    @uosdwiSrdewoH 2 года назад +1

    Did they think nobody would notice? Especially when the numbers are so prominent. Ignoring the fact they should be starting at the highest deck and going to deck 1 at the tippy top of the ship the order in which they pass decks is insane. I mean, right from the start, it looks like they begin from deck 6. They pick up Kirk at deck 13 and Bones at deck 12. Then as soon as they start sinking it cuts to an overhead of Sulu coming in to get them but they appear to be only 2 or 3 decks up at most. Then it gets really fun as the numbers we pass by are, in order, 35, 52, 64, 63 and 64 again, 65, 52 again, 77 and 78. Then it cuts to a POV presumably from our heroes looking up as Kirk says frantically "Hit the brakes!". At this point they just passed by deck 78 but from this POV they seem to be at least anywhere from 8-20 decks away from hitting the top of the turbolift shaft yet they once again pass by deck 78 and finally come to a stop a few feet from hitting the top. That was...that was bad. That was really bad. I find it hard to believe that nobody noticed they went past several decks multiple times as well as in the wrong order in the final edit. Did he just want it to seem like a bigger rocket boost but just didn't shoot enough deck numbers at the time so they figured who cares? It's not like anybody will notice the numbers in huge print on a cinema screen that is roughly 50-60 feet wide and 30 feet high. I'm sure it'll be fine.

    According to the diagram, they are climbing the main turboshaft. Scotty told them to use a turboshaft that is under maintenance. The Enterprise NCC 1701-A may be new and Starfleet may have decided to take revenge on Scotty for sabotaging the Excelsior by making him chief engineer of a "disaster", but why isn't there a turbolift in the longest shaft of the vessel, especially when Kirk, Spock and McCoy walked out of one when they arrived at the bridge after being called back from shore leave?

IMHO, taking out the part were Spock begins chasing Kirk down the mountain and the terrible blue screen scenes just need to disappear. That should have been left to our imagination, I would think from the moment Kirk fell to the shots taken from afar right up to where Spock is holding Kirk from a couple feet from the ground would fix it...if you have time of course.
