In the novelisation, Kirk became suspicious when "God" asked how they breached the barrier. The fact that "God" kept questioning them and did not answer Kirk's own questions made him suspect that they were being deceived.

True. After watching with this in mind, it made me wonder what God would have said. If not God, a more cumming person. Everything he says does make sense up until Kirk spoke. He could have simply wanted them to spread a new message of his word. One that only those worthy could spread. Asking about their journey seemed fair to ask to acknowledge their faith. Once Kirk asked, he could have answered that. But instead he says, "Who is this creature?" Perhaps to show that Kirk, being a captain, doesn't mean he is always right to what he thinks. He is afterall his child. He says "Bring it to me" as if to say "I will show you". But again, doesn't say what he will do. The last part, he strikes him. Strange that it does not trully harm him. Perhaps because he is weak, or to simply show his power. But then he admits to what he wants. To leave his imprisonment. Which was a mistake. Even if he wasn't God, there were ways he could have still fooled them to do his bidding. Or at least survive.

I always found Sybok an interesting character. He had no intention of causing harm. He was just blinded by his own vanity and arrogance. And it definitely broke me when he sacrificed himself to save the others.
And in the end that was the better choice. Heh he choose wisely (sorry, I could not resist doing this reference when I started this sentence). While ST5 did have some interesting plot ideas such as the crew going looking for God or a creator entity (I know this borders more on the fantastic than science fiction) as I could see the crew do this if they should find any evidence or indication that it is possible, the movie had a large number of plotholes that made this a very flawed story. Now that I think about it, Last Crusade is also sort of about man's search for God, be it in the form of the Holy Grail.
@@TheDutchGhost I think exploring religious motives in a future science fiction setting is a great idea with bad execution in most cases. The only interesting one I can think of from Star Trek is from DS9 when Bashir and Garak (was it Garak or someone else? Maybe O'Brien, I can't really remember) explored Sloan's dying mind and found a mysterious tunnel of light there, bringing religious indications with it. It's subtle and that's what I like about it.

I think it was better that the Wormhole aliens remained Clarke's law on how advanced science can be perceived by species lower on the ladder of development.

While I liked some of the episodes with them (like the one with the time displaced Bajoran poet), most of them were rather weird. I don't mind Sisko being Space Jesus for the bajorans, it was fun to watch him be revered and invited to bajoran events and such but the fact that Sisko's mother was possesed by a prophet to ensure his birth... It all seemed pointless in a way. Dukat was wasted with the whole joining evil prophets in a cave and I to this very day don't understand why would they keep Sisko in their wormhole realm for so long when they are literally a species living in a non-linear time. It would have been cooler if they either remained mysterious or explained why are they living in a wormhole in the first place.

Well with Sisko being Bajoran Jesus, I meant that he was literally conceived through involvement of the Wormhole aliens and perhaps even partly one. Before that he was simply someone who had fallen into the role after being the one who established a dialogue with the Wormhole aliens. I was never that sold on the Bajoran religion and I did not like how it took a more prominent role over time. I think the Wormhole aliens should never truly be explained. The ending with Dukat was just stupid, in a way it felt like Trek doing somewhat of a Star Wars. He became more and more a cartoon character.

2:35 I liked how this showed Sybok's compassion, even for Kirk, who had been opposing him from the start. Sybok still considered Kirk a friend. Goes to show that he wasn't bad, just misguided.
Sybok never saw Kirk as an enemy but rather someone to be spiritually converted even if he had to do so in the most heavy-handed way. You see this with certain religious leaders in real life behaving similarly too, which partially inspired the plot of this film.

For me, this along with Insurrection are the 2 worst Star Trek Movies. Really is a bad movie. William Shatner only agreed to do Star Trek 4 so he could direct this. Even the effects are substandard because of the strike at the time.

For me, this along with Insurrection are the 2 worst Star Trek Movies. Really is a bad movie. William Shatner only agreed to do Star Trek 4 so he could direct this. Even the effects are substandard because of the strike at the time.
I do like this scene, though.

The evidence that you are in the right place is, all Three will be seen (Revelation 5:7 and Revelation 21-22 the NewJerusalem city). The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

What kirk, spock and Mccoy realized is, for what they knew of God, it was not the God they heard of. God does not need a ship of any kind to transport Him. God knows all and He would not bring His wrath upon us without His righteousness. Also God would have warned them of the Holy Ground they were on.

This scene reminds me of the vaccine mandates. We the people in power have determined that you need to have the Covid19 vaccines in order to keep you and everyone safe, and you need to trust us completely and comply and not ask any questions. If you do ask questions or raise concerns, you'll be punished.

If "GOD" appeared in the sky and everyone saw him say whatever, wouldn't that be FACT he is there, which in turn "kills" FAITH because FACT means a lot more than FAITH?
