Detransition stories are SO important. When I was in high school, I 100% believed that I was ftm trans. I did a lot of research, listened to many ftm trans stories and did my best with what I had to present as male. It wasn't until the end of my senior year that I came across some detransition stories that caused me to self reflect and really consider what I was feeling, what was going on in my head and what transitioning would mean for me in the future. One story I listened to said some things about variety in binary male and females. All males are not ONE way and all females are not ONE way. There's no cookies cutter male or female. We can all have some variety of both male and female. For me it meant just because I tend to have more masculine thought processes than the "average" female doesn't make me any less of a woman. That story completely changed my life and I decided not to transition. I still have gender dysphoria sometimes but after having seen a therapist for other reasons we've discovered that it's due to a much different problem. Looking back at it all now I'm so thankful for detransition stories because it kept me from making decisions that would have been a horrible mistake for me personally.

Interesting story so thanks for sharing! I’m FTM myself and recently started hormones, I’m very thankful my mum made me wait till 16 until I saw a doctor (because of the wait over here in the UK it meant I would be seen closer to 18), as much as I hated it growing up it gave me that chance to really reflect on if this is what I want to do. And 100% it is for me, I’ve never doubted myself, the thought of me being anything close to female gives me crazy dysphoria. I was always the typical “Tom boy” my whole damn life, I knew something was off about me throughout school and after learning what being trans was it was a massive “Ohhhhhhhhhh.” Moment for me. If you don’t mind me asking, if you didn’t see the stories about detransitioning do you believe you would’ve medically transitioned and ended up regretting it?

    • @laurelthompson136

@@elmoelmo9194 I definitely wanted to medically transition and go through surgeries. Toward the end of thinking I was ftm, I was 18 and was waiting until I was able to move out of my parents' to start hormones and look into surgery. As I am now, I know for a fact I would have regretted medically transitioning. Like I said before, I'm still fairly "Male-like" in a lot of aspects but I'm comfortable with it being mixed with my still strong female aspects. Not being able to do things like be a mom with my own biological children would crush me now. Even more so if I wasn't able to because of a mistake I had put myself through.

There is a genuine risk of people making a mistake they deeply regret later in life. How can you be sure if you don't have the full picture, knowing the pros and cons of others' experience with that same thing? You can't. It's literally no one's fault that it didn't work out, sometimes transition is the right road and sometimes it isn't. But it's good healthy discourse to have these discussions about it so that people can see the other side of the coin and maybe people who suspect that they're trans may have a similar experience to those who detransition and have more in-depth analysis about their feelings. Just so toxic and disgusting. Like are you so self-centered that you can't even open your heart to people who were in your shoes, turns out that it wasn't the right road for them and now are severely confused and distressed over their identity and are dealing with irreversible changes to their bodies? Or worse, if you've BEEN a cheater, you recognize it in others. If you are 20 something years old, your emotions are mostly still about getting your needs met. Let's face it, babies ONLY emotions are directed to fulfill needs like food, stimulation, and comfort. That NB person who claims that "they/them" pronouns have been used for "centuries" is flat out wrong. We started using "they/them" pronouns specifically to refer to "Queer" identifying people who were in-between traditional gender roles in the '80s. Addison claims Shakespeare uses "they/them" to describe an individual. That may be so, bit I would guess it's in reference to "the Royal we". In monarchies, like Shakespeare lived in, the Royalty would refer to *themselves* as "we" specifically because *they* embody the entire state and represent all of *thier* subjects. It's not at all accurate to suggest that a common person can refer to him or herself as "we" or "they/them" in a Shakespearean context.

I think the issue ought to be less that detransitioners shouldn't be ALLOWED to tell their stories, and more that, as that guy said, they're often leveraged by transphobic people as 'proof' that transness isn't real, or as a way for parents not to believe their children when they say they're trans. There's a discussion to be had about to what extent minors should be able to medically transition (and frankly, in many cases, what we're talking about is hormone blockers, which there is discussion can be used to give kids time to live socially as the opposite gender without harmful ramifications if they change their mind), and that's a valid concern. However, it's reductive to pretend there's NO harm that is caused by those stories getting lifted up.

@@Potatopot724 hey, I'm not the person you're responding to but I really hope this helps you.
I'm a 24F. I had pretty much all the typical "trans kid" signs. Liking to play with boy toys, refusing to associate with anything girly the second I know that it's identified as such. Wearing the clothes that made me look like "one of the boys" getting really happy when people call me a boy and even thinking that I would at a point grow a penis. That might've just been bad sex ed and anatomy but still. That's all from as early as 3 years old up to 12 or 13. Even my family would adress me as one of the brothers and how they only had one sister/daughter.
It's important to note that I had some intense body dysmorphia for years as well. I didn't know what I hated about my body I just did. I hated everything, I cried about it eveey single time I looked in the mirror.
Then I started developing breasts oh boy...
I start getting intense gender dysphoria at that age and before you ask, yes, gender dysphoria isn't a trans exclusive experience at all. It's quite common to get "rapid onset gender dysphoria" as a cis person. Most people grow out of it by age 25.
My dysphoria went on for about 8 years, I used to bind religiously with things I should not have been binding with, like bandages. I binded it all the time for multiple days and while sleeping too. My breasts made me so dysphoric deapite being alsomt non existent. It was a nightmare.
By age 14 I cut all my hair off and started presenting more and more masculine. Keep in mind I never could actually come out or transition where I'm from and that has for once played in my favour. If someone told 16y.o me heck even 20 y.o me if she wanted her tits choped off I would've done ot in a heartbeat. I loved being recognised as a boy and hated when people could see through that. I have a very high pitched voice ans the second I speak I stop passing or people think I'm a 10 y.o boy.
This all lasted up until age 20. At that age I just started reflecting on everything that has happened and I realised that my feelings were all tied to the sexist environment I lived in. I wanted out and bring a guy was the closest thing to mentally escape despite transitioning being impossible. It made me mentally escape was presenting like a guy and feeling protected because of it.
It's worth mentioning that my household was extremely abusive and I needed to see something that resembled strength in the mirror amd a girl wasn't that. I needed that to survive, quite literally.
My body dysmorphia was due to being heavily sexualised from a very young age, my dysphoria was a sign of fear from a society that was so ready to make a feast of my body even as a child let alone a developing teen. My early childhood thoughts were me mimicking what I thought would get me by and protect me. It was all a coping mechanism from a cruel sexist world and an abusive environment.
At age 19 I almost got raped by a cab driver and it all clicked after a while. I realised why I was doing all that and also faced the reality that that wouldn't protect me and then months later I changed. I changed everything about the way I present myself and was thankful that I didn't do any permanent damage to my body.
My dysphoria was so bad I used to google how to get breast cancer just so I can get rid of my chest.
In the end it was my brain decided to do to protect me and keep me surviving.
      I hope this helped

Why are there so many different labels floating around these days? Surely this just confuses young people coming to terms with who they are more than helps them? They have so much to question nowadays. Why do we need a label? As a 30 year old man who likes men I don't know that gay fits me 100% because it's limiting and it doesn't define who I am more widely than who I find sexually attractive. But I don't spend my life trying to align myself to a label because we are all unique in every aspect of our lives and I don't feel a need to force being a labelled sexuality on everyone I meet. In fact I don't tell people; straight people don't have to, they'll know if I introduce a boyfriend to them that this is the person that I'm in love with, why do I need to shout my sexuality from the rooftops? I feel like coming out has been made more complicated for people than it needs to be by the plethora of identities and the general pressure put on them to be some kind of advocate by the "community". I agree with your summary, it is like a church and it sometimes seems to preach harder than the priests (not hard to do I know) but to the point that the community is starting to feel a step away from radicalised.

    • @starr2shine738

I feel like it's because people that have a narrow feild of vision have very loud voices. People that don't understand that all these unique people still share a singular label.
A person can be heterosexual or LGBT and still not be a stereotype or some other thing.
All these labels have done is just enforce stereotypes where people have tried to stop them.

people dont need to have a label and because you choose not to have one, don’t enforce it on other people. Having labels feels comforting to many people so therefore... let them be. Also yes I agree that coming out is becoming a duty, some people (most straight people) are starting to encourage coming out to people which endagers the community. but if people who comfortably express their gender identity/sexuality and shout it from the rooftops, who cares? They’re comfy. And straight people do the exact same so it’s just hypocritical when they get mad at lgbtqia+ for the same things they do.

As someone who is detransitioning and has gone through a ton of counseling to get this point.....you can’t just trust your emotions. My emotions were twisted by self hatred, severe body dysmorphia, and suicidal depression.
I’m turning 28 tomorrow. I transitioned from 24 to almost 28..... now obviously trans people are real and valid, but people like me exist too, and to be honest sharing any personal story in the utmost honesty should always be okay. It’s healthy for people to have different experiences in everything.
And for anyone who reads this, don’t feel bad for me or pity me. I’m not embarrassed to have wrongfully transitioned and I’m not depressed about detransitioning. I went through what I needed to go through and I’m a healthy, mentally stable, person for the first time in my life.
I think we should keep in mind that for people who’ve experienced severe trauma...the decision making process of someone with untreated ptsd, eating disorders, suicidal depression etc etc is not the same as a mentally healthy individuals. It was my decision and I fucked up, but i fucked up by trusting my fucked up emotions and my fractured psych.

I’m sure it’s easy to feel really alone and depressed when you make a mistake like that it’s more harmful to suppress these stories. It’s the peoples obligation to differentiate whether they should transition or not. If its unsure then I think they should wait till it is sure.
