This is so good! Love your examples of how you can be both strict and empowering/loving with kids. I'm a teacher and I can tell within the first week of school which of my student have "friends" raising them, and which ones have real parents who are actually doing their job correctly.

After coming soon to the end of raising four sons (youngest is in his senior year of HS), and now getting to enjoy the blessing of two young grand-kids (we are young grandparents ourselves lol), I could not agree with you more on the advice you've given in these past videos!!! We have also been in ministry for 25+ years, and I can't count how many times I've had to tell fellow youth ministers over the years this same advice -- we are not their friend, we are their pastors. Thanks for articulating all of this in a fun, yet clear way!

I once made this point on social media in response to a post that read, I and my daughter are best friends (father posted). He appeared to be in his 30's and she about 12 yo. Immediately I thought, why don't you have friends your own age? I understand love them, like them and enjoy them but best friends? Needless to say the father lashed out in anger and explained how well adjusted everyone was and suggested I should mind my business. I wasn't surprised or offended by his response mostly because I don't have the tact and easy going personality you have.. ....Excellent video, thanks.

I'm young parent of two and I'm constantly being told by other parents and my friends that I'm "two hard" on my older child, she's almost two and that I should be more of her "friend". It's not about friendship it's about love and respect. And theirs no age to start that your suppose to stay consistent throughout their life! Keep making these videos. I watch them on the days I feel like giving up like honestly

This is going to sound really messed up but I got validation as a parent when my 18 year old son and I had a massive blow out, like I mean he had his fist clenched at me so I put him against the wall and held him there till he calmed down, blow out. At the end of it, he grabbed me and hugged me so hard and told me he loved me. When he was little and in to his teen years (before it became uncool to hug his mom) after every time out or other parenting moment we always hugged it out so he knew I had his back and would love him no matter what.

I had this moment the other day. baby teething, two eldest (12and5) arguing over everything and hubby working late. I am hiding in the kitchen with tooth ache and my son tells me " you are the best mother ever, we push your buttons and you love us. you are the best mother ever cause when you want to beat us you dont" our families number one rule is no smacking. we have never smacked and I needed that at that moment. so I put the wine back in the fridge and made them dinner.

Can I love you and laugh and not be a mom? Yes, yes I can. Can I enjoy and understand while still being single? Yes, yes I can. I've been around too many people who have completely given into their kids, abdicated parenthood... they can't even control their dogs! I on the otherhand have an adorable four legged dog who every one marvels at, even the trainers at Petsmart and Petco... why? SPENDING TIME TEACHING THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING. BTW - I'm a screenwriter and we should talk! ;-)

I've been with my fiancee for 3 years going on 4 and I have to agree with you I wasn't a parent before I really got to know who I now call my daughter because getting involved with my beautiful soon to be wife that at the time had a 9 yr old I had to be her friend first that way me and my Lil girl could learn each others ways after a certain amount of time she started seeing me more as a parent and less as a friend so I guess what I'm trying to say is it depends on the circumstances of the parent
