The re circulation of flue gases/ products of combustion normally only shows up on an analyser when testing the boiler in minimum rate, as at max fan speed the forced air is strong enough to pass past any faulty seals or joints on the flue, therefore it is very important that both max and min combustion checks are carried out. Great job as usual Allan.

Thanks Allen. Very clear as always, thru Ambassador of the trade.
What i did ( i am retired now) i calibrated the tester in the outside air-passage of the flue before the boiler was in operating mode.
That way i always had clean non Carbon Monoxide air.
In the area were you stand could be CO concentration from the boiler you work on or from neighbouring Gas appliances.
Take care, and keep up the good work.

Informative yes but could have shown us how to replace these seals and part number would have been great. But watching you at end Alan you were very informative. 20.9 o2 now in my head hopefully. What's standard tolerance on that 20.9 obviously per mi but is there a generic tolerance?

  • @gunsey876

How would you categorise a low co ppm inside a case of a room sealed appliance, not passing into the room and not pushing the ratio out of the tolerance? As always thanks for the content

"Modern boilers I am afraid built to fail."
This is why I refuse to replace my old working Vokera Compact 24 and 28 boilers - I must have really bad luck with boiler engineers coming over and telling me it needs to be replaced with a modern one before even trying to troubleshoot problems on existing.
On my Compact 24 it was a broken pump plastic housing that was pierced through right behind the automatic air vent bottle (the housing has over 2mm thick walls so am still puzzled how this happened but it looked like a screw driver job) causing water to leak - just had to replace the housing which I got cheap from from eBay with a spare pump. Another leak was from a loosened nut on the heat exchanger's water connection pipe that took 1 minute to tighten up and stop the leak.
They all wanted to replace my boiler instead of troubleshooting and fixing simple things. I also don't believe in boiler servicing in the UK anymore as many of certified engineers that serviced my two boilers didn't spend more than 15-20 minutes on each! Other faults that had to fix involved two ignition PCBs (a common fault on boilers), one main PCB and thermistors replacements.
I took apart my two boilers (excluding any gas related stuff which don't want to touch) in order to clean all water related parts e.g. including removal of debris from pumps, washers replacement etc. and it took me way more than 15 mins to do it properly on each (2 hours on average). Both boilers now run smooth and super quiet - no issues whatsoever.
I wish I didn't have to touch these things myself as am way too busy with IT stuff but have completely lost my confidence in quality of services provided by local boiler engineers (including Vokera certified sent to me - they should all watch these videos!). They don't bother to check things properly or clean parts when necessary to maximise boilers' life-span hence had to start doing these things myself and only get engineers to sign off my work. I'm also getting a flue tester to do annual CO, CO2 and O2 readings as none did them apart from convenient quick visual inspections (I think they rely too much on off-shelf CO testers and regulations that enforce them). I'm still hoping to meet a boiler engineer(s) one day that will take their job away from me...

  • @scottw9270

Hi Allen does rain water get into the outlet of the flue and where does it go, I’ve had a new boiler fitted with a deflection kit on the flue the boiler is a ideal logic max.
The deflection kit slightly angled upwards towards the sky and the instructions says it should be like that, but I think it would be catching the rain. Surly this isn’t good for the boiler ?

Just wondering when you do the flue integrity check and you get 20.9 % of air is good !
But what happened if you also will get Co2 reading??

Or you should not get any Co2 reading ??

I work for a housing association work on mainly Worcesters, Vaillants and Baxis.
The Red gaskets on Worcester are more common.
As woth Vaillants, I've had 2 this year.
And it less common on the Baxis.
However I think it's more common on the older the boiler is.

It annoys me how some job vacancies for boiler service engineer roles are after 8-10 jobs to be completed a day or they will let you go. You can’t do a proper service if you battle to service 8-10 a day, unless you do an 18 hour day
