    We learned in sales training ‘whoever talks first loses’ and NEVER ask ‘yes/no’ questions. Applied to trucking, a good way to help get your rate is to NEVER ask what they are paying or what the rate is, you just lost by putting the other guy in control and they can hold whatever rate because of it. When you respond with ‘that’s to low’ or ‘I need $xxx’ it can come across as argumentative. No one wants to be insulted are argued with :(
    Instead, try asking ‘What’s your target rate?’ or ‘What are you looking to get it moved for today?’. That let’s them know that you know there’s room to negotiate the rate. When the broker replies with $XXX, you can simply state ‘That’s a little light, what can we do to get closer to $ or ‘We’re gonna need to be at/around $X. What can we do to make that work today?’. This makes THEM answer with a solution on how to make your rate work… not you trying to convince them. Let them solve the problem for you.
    Have a conversation, not a debate.

      You made excellent points- I'll try that today. I think I am so fed up with brokers that I just enjoy saying "nope, not gonna happen" 😅

  • @applejacks971
    @applejacks971 Год назад +8

    The people that are saying ‘you take too long to book a load’ are part of the problem. They are obviously jumping on the first crap load because ‘gotta go gotta go!’. Thus, the brokers know ‘we’re getting it covered for that’, because the aforementioned idiots are stumbling over themselves on a race to the bottom.
    NEVER rush to take a load. Let the brokers sit on it for a while and contemplate their own rates.
    Fitzmark told me yesterday ‘That’s all the shipper wants to pay’, of which I responded, ‘No, that’s all YOU want to pay, you’re still getting your same cut’. Push back on these people, let’em know you know.
    For the love of Gawd, STOP TAKING THE FIRST LOAD OF CHEAP CRAP YOU FIND!!!!!

    Interesting video Maranda. Several things I must comment on. 1) as you know, the really good loads Do Not stay on the load board for long, they get snatched up quickly. 2) The same load is often posted multiple times by different brokers, giving the "illusion" that there is more freight available than what actually is. 3) there's really only a few reasons a broker is calling you to look for a truck, low pay or unreasonable expectations. For this reason, I've never posted my truck as available. Saves me being bothered by all the bottom feeders. 3) I often find myself saying NO to haul loads a lot more often than I say yes. 4) Brokers frequently throw out very low ball offers. Likewise, I always throw out insanely high offers. Remember, while they can always can come up from their bottom, once I establish my bottom price, then it's difficult to rise from that, whereas if I establish my bottom price in the clouds, then I can come down to reality. 5) hesitation in negotiation is a good thing. Do Not be too quick to agree to terms. 6) And finally, I always start every negotiation with these words, "Ok Mr/Mrs broker, your job is to get this load moved for as little as possible. My job is to get this load moved for as as much as possible. Regardless of whether or not we can do a deal, we can at least be friends. Build relationships with your brokers. In so doing, the brokers remember you and guess what, when the really good loads come, often I've had brokers I've known for many years call me with a load offer before it hits the board. A broker would rather give a load to a driver they've worked with in the past that they know will do a good job. In closing, here's an excellent illustration. While on vacation one winter, I was sitting on the sundeck of a cruise ship that was anchored off the Cayman Islands when my phone rang. Kim, a Broker I'd worked with for many years, called me. After a few pleasantries she offered me a good paying load for the following week and I booked it. After hanging up the phone I sat there in the sun enjoying my peaceful vacation thinking to myself it's good to have people looking out for you. DO NOT fear guys and gals, the freight market is definitely in a "winter" right now, however there will be sunshine in our future. God Bless

    I am an O/O and book all my own loads, I own a reefer and a flatbed for market flexibility. My reefer is also parked for now due to bottom $ rates and my flatbed does not move unless I get minimum of $1100-$1200 + a day, even on the short hauls. You are absolutley correct becuase as we know the broker may say quick load and unload but how many times have you reached a shipper and they take hours to load you, or get to the reciever and they are not there or not able to unload till the next morning. This is good content Miranda, although I handle my calls similarly its always interestesting to see other proffessionals in business, please consider doing more of these types of informational videos in the future. Also, I have quit taking TQL loads too!

    Yesterday, after loading jumbo ingots of a steel, I was tired and showed disrespect to it while securing them with straps only, and as a pre-punishment steel moved towards my cab about 10 inch at the first 6% downhill. I was lucky that I’ve spotted it immediately and did emergency stop so it didn’t ended up inside my cab. After that I’ve chained them properly. So guys, always respect your load by giving it a right securement.

    So the load volume is high but the rates are low? To bad truckers can't come together and just say no to low paying freight. Don't ask me what's low paying freight! $1.20 is low paying freight. $2.00 is cheap freight. $4.00 is good freight, you can afford fuel on a 5mpg truck with $4.00 freight, not so much on $2.00.

    Being from Ohio I try to stay around the Great Lakes region and Midwest I don't blame you for staying away from TQL, they are the absolute worst brokerage company I've ever dealt with for flatbed. They are rude and I've actually had their brokers hang up on me when I tried to renegotiate the rate, so I wouldn't even look at their loads. The company I drive for pulled their flatbeds off the road and now we're doing local Pneumatic tanker work, which is paying a lot better.

    It's a lot easier than dealing with the liability of leasing to a company and only getting 70% of the load and they're scraping all the profit off the top not to mention you run a high risk of getting fired when you lease to a company. But if you work for yourself can't nobody fire you you just take out your billfold and clean up your mess and pay for what you broke. Companies do it all the time. And they do it at the expense of the driver. Now it's my turn I would rather have my own MC number and my own authority. Just like cleetus snow and the Bandit

    I'm not part of the trucking industry. As I was watching you work I was surprised how much manual work was involved and thought that there is room to automate some or possibly much of your interactions. AI would not be required but would make the job easier. I also was struck by how little shippers expect to pay. I assume that if a shipper calls one hundred bookers then somebody will be desperate enough to say yes. This resets the going rate and makes being a trucker a difficult career to earn a living. If Tesla ever solves the problem of self driving trucks then I see this industry completely transforming.
