    man I've seen cam index all over the place. I've started doing all 8 cylinders in high dollar engines. I've seen as much as 6deg variance from a well known cam company. This particular engine kept burning up #6 piston and after beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why I figured out the cam timing was all over the place. Great video brother.

      @@powellmachineinc Yes absolutely. Good point. Especially when you have lifter location off AND cam index issues. Stacked tolerances become a nightmare. BHJ got my money for the fixtures and I'm guilty of letting them collect dust LOL.

    This information goes right along with the information about the lifter bores. If it isn't right for every cylender it's not going to run its best. Probably will give the tuner issues.
    Thanks for the information.
    I believe this along with many other things is why it's best to have one shop or man machining and building the engine.

    Wow! That’s terrible that manufacturers have gotten the “that’s good enough” or the “they’ll never know” attitude. I don’t why I’m surprised cause it seems pride and quality almost seem to be a myth anymore. You sir are one of a dying breed of people who really care about doing things to the best of your ability which imo is very impressive. Thank you for showing us your findings cause seeing it and being able to hypothesize what’s causing it is information that people that have no knowledge of machine work can understand.     I was just about to ask what governs the profile generation when you produced the index plate ,so thanks for that.
    Whereas small shops will do precision by default , large manufacturers will add a premium for it . Taking pride in your work makes the best quality control.

    Great video! Really cool to see a minor tweak on the first lobe grind make a perfect alignment on the second grind. The blue reveals all! Really shocking too that an OEM cam has so much variance on some lobes.

    Really curious if the cam manufacturers are trying to grind the cam assuming that there is some loaded twist in the cam when it’s running , maybe that’s not a thing, I’ve often wondered this about camshaft with heavy spring pressure, thanks for taking the time to make the videos.       Good insight. But a cam core is a beefy chunk of metal and would need a lot of force to deflect.

      Not on these, but gun-drilling (adding another torsional 'wall' through the center) and progressive clocking of the lobes was something I was shown as pro stock/comp eliminator tech. Thats an inch of lift and well over a half-ton spring pressure over the nose, though.

    perfect example of why you should get cams custom cut and blueprinted.... when you use quality parts with great machining you will be surprised how inline everything comes...
    you will notice this when you degree cams in, a very good old school high end engine builder told me that.there's a reason why nascar engine builders d that too
    sometimes a few extra dollars spent really goes a long way later on

    How many of the big companies even use an index plate anymore? I thought everyone by now had CNC grinders like I do. With the wide variety of engines out there these days, with varying lifter angles etc. Do you have to have an index plate for every possible combination? I can think of 5 different BBC lifter angle packages in my head right now, stock, 42-48, 45-50, 42-27, 47-52, etc. I have never seen a machine like yours, its interesting. I can tell you have pride in your work. Keep it up.

      Every cam company that I know of still has manual grinders in production, yes we have plates for every different bank angle and firing order

    That's some interesting machine work and I've always thought this variance was what caused the 'freak' motors that we'd hear about now and then that outperformed others that were supposedly 'identical'.
    Honda brought a semi-truck load of CBX motorcycles to the local dragstrip back in the day and my buddy test rode each one until the tires were gone while Honda documented all the runs. Then they plotted all the performances and while this did make the classic 'Bell Curve' there was one bike that was faster than all the others and of course one that was bringing up the rear as the slowest one.
    This was what Honda wanted to see and then disassembled them and very carefully measured everything trying to find out WHY one was faster than all the rest? Was it some minor camshaft timing tweaks that accidentally happened to that one motor? It's such a complex thing within a running motor that each cylinder might very well like a little different timing than the others due to port, intake or exhaust variables.
    I've only been a subscriber for a few weeks now but have already seen things from Mr Powell that I'm very happy to thank him for showing....much appreciated!!

    After seeing how that first lobe started grinding initially, I though that maybe that was a wear pattern in the lobe. Like the leading/trailing edge that takes the most brunt of holding the pressure of the spring. Then you got to the others and it wasn't a consistent pattern. So maybe it is just a manufacturing defect? Those few degrees they're off should be an acceptable amount for a daily driver. But like you said. It should be as close to perfect as it can be for a high performance application

    These vids make me wonder why I didn't pay more attention to a buddy of mine years ago who worked in a cam grinding/manufacturing shop. Seemed like he spent a lot of time grinding and installing his Frankenstein cams in his '55 every other weekend. Anyway, is the feed into the stone automatic or are you feeding it manually?

    Can't, even trust the manufacturer. They, charge big money, for inaccurate machining. Takes, a knowledgeable machine shop, to figure out their mistakes.

    As a now retired lifelong Tool & Die Maker that has had a lot of time on cylindrical grinders, I have to ask, how many cams have you wiped out because of interruptions or loss of focus and the index plate did not match the lobe position? Saw a guy grinding a dovetail on a big cast part and he forgot to take the dowel pin out that he was checking over for size. Cylindrical grinders do make for some bad crashes.

    Old timer taught me always degree the paired cyls. 1&6 on a Chevy. Had a big name cam off 4 degrees once! They acted like that was not even possible.

    Is surface hardening an issue after you “touch-up” a cam? I’m a Harley tech and the most common issue with valve trains is the hardened surface flaking off the lifter roller, then eating up the lobe.

      No issues, if it were it would be a issue before we ever touched it, as we only remove around .010-.015", what u are seeing is just low quality material and incorrect heat treat

      No, all intake are "indexed " depending on bank angle and firing order of the engine, exh are the same way

    Just my observation.
    Variations in common everyday performance cams seems irrelvant because few people will degree them anyway... And if they do, they wont degree them on a dyno to get them exact for the best power.
    So it seems pretty moot.

      Chain slack is a "thing ", but the lobes are still in time with ea other, quality timing sets don't get slack

      True, the lobes are ground in. But if they're not ILC degreed by Dyno testing to what each individual combination wants, does it really matter much?
      Higher dollar timing sets should last longer. Some don't. Everyday hot rodders will never tell the difference of cam lobes or chain slack.

      @@powellmachineinc Good. It was just something that came to mind. We used to be required to have our machines laser measured once a year and needed to maintain records for each machine. We did a lot of government and "defense" industry work, though. Hell, we even had random pee tests. LOL. Actually, after going outside to get another beer, I believe the correct term is "Qualified". Something about NMBA? ISO 27 something, something.

      Well the cam master for the grinder is ×5 bigger than the cam lobeit self, he must have a the same master for this cam or close

      No, you would have 3 asymmetrical lobes and 5 symmetrical would you?, also most hyd roller lobes are asymmetrical, but that happens off the bc generally, not below the nose rad.

    Must have been made on a Monday. Somones .001 is anothers .0011. Or .2 of a degree is someone's.5. Tolerances are these for a reason and no 2 machines are the same but thats why we have standards.
    Case in point. Clearly who ever ground that cam has something slightly off and they probably dont even know it. They check all ther cams an they probably all pass inspection because they are taking comparison measurements. From one to the next and not even knowing they are all wrong.
    P.s., after 23 years as a certified mechanic, i trust nothing........ double or tripple check everything! Yes, its more time consuming but its the only way one will know if its right.
    Its like a carpenter how has been using the same tape measure for 30 years. Its going to be off. It has to be check on a standard and this clearly is not being done.
    On that note, how late, or early would that valve be when talking about piston travel? How much breath would that cyclinder loose? I wonder.

      I think we are waiting on lifters, if it's the order I'm thinking of you haven't been charged, lifters are supposed to be in the month.

    Great Job , real i need a custom cam from yor shop . I see your videos , and dont trust in any " big brand" most today that the C__p cams own a lot of old brands .

    How do you put taper on the cam lobes but not on the cam journals? Different stones?
