How are you sending be this? There is no internet in Canada, no cities or civilization. You must have crossed into Canada and went to the nearest Internet cafe to send this. Alaska is only snow upon snow and Eskimos in igloos
John, when you said "wait for it... disease" my mind seriously went straight to "the Mongols." Thanks for permanently forming that connection in my brain.
Because conquering is always more expensive than renting. A major factor in the failure of every empire in history is that the cost of maintaining violent rule over foreign people costs too much money and if not given up leads to economic collapse. *watches America's debt clock rise past 20,000,000,000,000.*
all the extreme patriotic people on these comments need to chill. If you actually want to kid yourself and think that America is this perfect country that has never done anything wrong, fine, stay with that mentality. just because someone (like john green) decides to acknowledge all the shit his country and his race has done, that doesnt mean that he hates his country. It means that he swallowed his pride and admitted that America is no angel. yall need to stop blindly following and agreeing with everything your country does just because of patriotism. learn to think for yourselves for christ's sake
***** no im actually kinda amused. normally, insular people like you actually try to cover up their ignorance with bullshit excuses saying "we had a reason to do all the shit we did!" or "that didnt happen, we are perfect!". you dont even try lol never met anyone who is actually proud of mass murder and genocide.
Well, yeah. Everyone thinks that America did good things for the Philippines, and they did. But they did a lot of horrible things too. And we're still feeling the effects of those actions today. I wonder how many Americans realize that the Benevolent Assimilation is a big, fat lie and that the Spanish and Americans didn't even bother to let a Filipino representative in during the negotiation for the Treaty of Paris (in which America basically bought the country).
Luckily the Philippines have forgiven us, and in-fact, they are the US biggest 'supporter' now meaning they consistently favor us about 90% while our other close allies give us anywhere between 50-60% including the UK, Israel, Etc.
dandmarcus The Philippine government has forgiven the US, true. But then again not many people are educated about the things the US did when we were under their control, since more attention is paid to the Spanish colonial period (333 years compared to about 40 for US). And people get really riled up when the US refuses to let GIs stand trial for crimes they committed on Philippine soil. So the US might not be as highly approved as you think.
I'm Filipino along with the rest of my family, and nearly all Filipinos love America for what they did to us after World War 2, and during world war 2.
LaxGoalieWestPoint So am I, but I'm also highly skeptical of the US' policies pre-WWII and even beyond. Did you know that the Americans replace the fiesta with "Hygeia" because the fiesta is apparently "unsanitary"? And did you know that they still refuse to acknowledge that the Hukbalahap was part of the anti-Japanese forces during WWII? Or that they made kids build toilets as part of compulsory education? Or that after the occupation US was demanding parity rights, ie being able to own land in the Philippines? You probably don't. In fact, I wouldn't have learnt of this had I not had a history professor with a penchant of turning history on its head. Before, I used to think that the US occupation was probably one of the best periods in Philippine history. Now, I'm certain that is not the case. Sure, they gave us public education and whatnot, but there's also a dark side most Filipinos don't know about.
I've been taking world and US history classes for 11 years and have never heard of what happened in the Philippines, Cuba, or Puerto Rico. Thank you crash course for teaching me
i wish he had two versions of each episode one for crash course and one for a long explanation as he really gets the point across. i always feel like i want him to make the videos longer.
I knew the Philipines got a very raw deal from the US during that time, but I had no idea just how bad it was. As much as I love the dry humor in John Green's work, I especially like that he's not afraid to put the darkest parts of history on the table like this. You can't learn from history if it stays swept under the rug, after all.
this channel has quite literally been helping me since middle school. I am now in college thank you so much for making history digestible for people who struggle with focus when reading =)
Love these crash course videos, although the name of the Filipino gentleman who fought against the Spaniards is Emilio Aguinaldo, not Emiliano. His name is as iconic to Filipinos as Thomas Jefferson's is to Americans.
Dude I've been using this channel since my freshman year of highschool, Currently a freshman in college and I'm still using it to help me fresh or get started on whatever history assignment I have. BTW if you really learn about US history which you of course go into greater depth in college. There is so much irony from what happened in the past and what current political issues there are today.
Fun fact, Benjamin Franklin almost persuaded the British King to cede parts of Canada, during the treaty of Paris. Imagine, we almost acquired Canada peacefully.
Hi Crash Course! I have a one correction on your video. The first Philippine president is Emilio Aguinaldo (not Emiliano). Also, his surname is pronounced as A-GI-NAl-DO. Also, thanks for acknowledging the Filipino - American war. US schools teach this event as a "rebellion," even though the Philippines was declared an independent state before the first battle happened. Cheers, from the Philippines.
Just a few corrections - It was Emilio Aguinaldo, not Emiliano. - Thanks for referring to the Philippine-American War as 'Philippine War' instead of the former term 'Philippine Insurgency' because the latter term implied that the country had no working independent government. - Many people do think that the Philippine-American War lasted until 1902 (not 1903), when the Americans declared the end of hostilities in the Philippines. However, if we are to add photos of the Battle of Bud Bagsak, then maybe we should count up to 1913.
"Because, you know, how else are we gonna get malaria?" This is one of my favorite channels on RUclips. Informative and hilarious and thoroughly entertaining.
I find the situation of Philippines and its struggle between two great powers, the US and Spain, and its parallel to Romania's struggle between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire very fascinating. It is extremely anti-parallel. The parallels are the struggle between two empires, using one to overthrow the other and then fighting against the ones that at first helped. The differences lie in how different the powers in question were, the very different
I've taken several US History courses at all levels of schooling and all I have to say is bravo! I could recognize the events and documents that were over wise forgotten and I took not of the subliminal memorization aids you implanted into the video. I can tell this was put together by a true educator.
Yeah open them up when I am not not ready to be competitive with the incoming trade yet, destroying my own production ability. Oh by the way, I also have to forget about what happened to say India when they opened their country up to the west. That makes perfect sense for my country's welfare..
True, though being Norwegian I remember how school pretty much taught us how after the Viking age we were pretty much reduced to just a piece of land ravaged by plague, among other things. I remember our history books also teaching about injustices done to the Sami and Gypsy people in more recent centuries.
hi! I'm from Philippines. I enjoy watching crash courses. :) just a correction, the Philippine president name is Emilio Aguinaldo, instead of Emiliano. He was our first president
As a Brazilian citizen, I consider the United States my second country, but it's impossible not to be outraged by American expansionism. It completely goes against the democratic ideals the country was founded upon, therefore impossible to deny it. And the worst of all, I don't see many Americans complaining about it. The truth is: the United States of America was never a true republic.
Hi, I'd just like to point out that a lot of historians in the Philippines strongly believed that the battle in Manila Bay was a fake battle between the Spanish and Americans. If I remember correctly, the Americans already had an agreement with Spain to hold said battle in order to give the Americans some authority in saying that they mostly won the war in the Philippines, when actually, the Philippine revolutionaries had already been defeating the Spanish in the Islands, except in Manila, which I believe was the last foothold of the Spanish in the Philippines.
Spain's view to avoid the ignominy of defeat is a foreshadowing of the Battle of Manila Bay. Philippine historians cite that the battle was just a "play" of sorts so Spain could save face after they "sold" their interests in the Philippines to the United States of America since they know for a fact they can't win. This is the prevailing view of many of my countrymen. Not being "that guy" but I'd like to point out it is Emilio Aguinaldo and not Emiliano. Thank you so much CrashCourse for the awesome video! I was looking for a supplement video/material regarding the Filipino-American War. If ever one of our local films titled "Heneral Luna" comes by your screens please please please watch it! It is soooo goood. It is a historic film depicting the era.
Hi there! I'm a history PhD student working on my prelims at the moment and I wanted to say how much I LOVE this wonderfully informative and funny presentation. Thank you for a wonderful teaching example: in addition to being informative, you've also given us an understanding of some of the historiographical debates taking place in a way that is mercifully understandable. I see in the comments below that others have already offered some critiques, but I think this is wonderful. I may end up using some of these vids for classes in future, if that would be acceptable.
Me too, I found these courses very entertaining and informative, and I'm not even american! Don't forget to support the show at subbable here: subbable.com/crashcourse (if not ;)
***** Sorry to ask this, but is the picture in your profile a picture of you? Because if it is, being the picture of an african american, you should remember how you came to be an "african american": by having your distant ancesters conquered, enslaved and relocated to North America to work for europeans. Not to mention the fact that according to your logic, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr. were traitors for acknowledging there was something wrong with their country; a country born from the founding fathers's betrayal against the british crown.
you miss pronounce the name of our 1st president in the Philippines heheheh!! but still im happy that you include our country in this history lesson hehehe!! :D
Thank you for talking about this. So Many Americans are oblivious to the fact that we we're so imperialistic. Also thank you for enlightening people on our atrocities on the Philippines. We aren't always the good guys my fellow Americans! If anyone wants a book that talks more about this, I suggest "Fly Boys". It touches up a lot on this stuff. Thanks again Crashcourse team!
Hey Mr. Green, do you think you could do a Crash Course on Cuban Economics before and after the rule of Fidel Castro? I'm doing some research for a paper, and I've hit a block. I really love your videos, and these are pretty much a major part of my test studying (And I pass all my tests after I watch your US History videos). But thanks either way!!!
7:00 I was in my US History class watching this, and I freaked out so hard when I saw that for warship they put the Tolmekian Gunship from Nausicaä in the background. Nausicaä is my all time favorite film, so I was really happy seeing it there.
But that was an actual fact, though. I'm guessing he said that to make people discuss it in the comments. Oh, and by the way, Michelle Obama confirmed that's where he is from, too.
P.S. The poor, poor, oppressed people of Puerto Rico are living the highest standard of living in all Latin America, and I would guess you could throw Spain in there too.
Hey John, PH politics finally featured in this series. BTW, I don't know if it has been brought to your attention yet but it's not Emiliano Aguinaldo but Emilio Aguinaldo (his family name is pronounced "Aginaldo", the "u" is silent, from Spanish pronunciation rules.
One thing John gets wrong here: the Philippines began fighting Spain for independence two years before the Spanish-American war. The Americans then intervened in the Philippine revolution on the Filipino side, but didn't invite the Filipinos to the bargaining table when they made a treaty with Spain to end the war - instead, they paid Spain $20 million to buy it, knowing full well the Katipunan, the Filipino revolutionary group, was fighting for independence.
***** I love and hate Empire. Love Because: I was my Frist Total War Game. Hate because: It ant as Historically Accrete, as it could be. I played Rome 2 and Attila. Just wish Creative Assembly made Empire 2 or at lest a Medieval Remasterd.
It is nice to see how much this channel has grown, evolved and has shown how they have learned from some of their choice of words, information and imagery to more open, inclusive and unapologetic terms that show a raw history, well w/o fear of expressing the reality of racism, genocides and white supremacy.
I wish John would give a better history of Hawai'i in this episode. He kind of acts like they (for the most part) wanted to be annexed. No. The Hawaiian monarchy and government were completely overthrown.
Classic case of ends justify the means, I suppose. At the end of the day the Spanish American war made the US into a global power, greatly expanded US military and economic power, and brought an upsurge in national pride like nothing since the Civil War. But the fact of the matter is Spain never attacked the US, and in winning the war the US took over the role of colonial oppressor in the Philippines and Cuba.
+Daniel Ryan End justify the means you suppose? you say it like this was an altogether terribly bad thing. Cuba was free from American rule and only had capitalistic demands placed on it and its resources; leaving it to otherwise govern itself which it did heartily. It was a method of securing what was too close to you to be anything other than an ally; see cuban missile crisis. And, in the Philippines, the atrocities were the one part of this i can't and no one should be proud of. Seeing imperialism in itself as a bad thing is kind of idioitic. It opened trade and allowed connections to be formed with most of the known world, even civilizations that otherwise had no knowledge of one another and gave technology and political ideology to people with no concept of it.
I think you should use even MORE numbers. Makes it more visceral, especially when trying to explain to people how barbaric all empires--even ours--are.

His most successful book is, I believe, The Fault in our Stars.

The point of the book was that John *couldn’t* find Alaska and thus concluded that it must not exist.

yeah but i dont care aslong as our country is featured :D
raphael guzman Disgusting. Have some shame will ya?
Thank you for talking about this. So Many Americans are oblivious to the fact that we we're so imperialistic. Also thank you for enlightening people on our atrocities on the Philippines. We aren't always the good guys my fellow Americans! If anyone wants a book that talks more about this, I suggest "Fly Boys". It touches up a lot on this stuff. Thanks again Crashcourse team!
Please make a crash course about history of US Foreign Policy! It would be really a great help...
Am I the only one watching this for homework
great video, but imperialism was truly devastating to american colonies, especially Hawaii.
+Laurel Kastner
was?
American imperialism is still going on
I love how he's still so funny even 9 years later
"Two years before Barack Obama was born in Kenya"
Surely, good sir, this is some troll-ery, no?
But that was an actual fact, though. I'm guessing he said that to make people discuss it in the comments.
Oh, and by the way, Michelle Obama confirmed that's where he is from, too.
Don't listen to Camren, John Green was being tongue-in-cheek because some people (like the above) actually believe that. He was born in Hawaii.
It was a joke...the Trump-shaped cartoon that popped up while he was talking was the clue that he is kidding.
President obama had a dad named Barack Obama. He was born in Kenya.
Camren Morgan Anyone who believes that Obama was born in Kenya (or is Muslim) is literally a fucking moron.
8:45 My mans predicted Corona!
Excellent! Thanks! Using this for Puerto Rican high school History of US Imperialism
I love how he knew exactly how hard to push to have it land on Russia.
The one chromatic part = America
The rest of the green parts = Americn't
Obviously, we built the Panama Canal in Panama because that was the place best for building a canal between the Atlantic and the Pacific.
The way he pronounced Emilio Aguinaldo was hilarious.
1:27 that _definitely_ took several tries, or else everyone was surprised it went right the first time
Love your videos! Keep up the good work! :-)
I really want to hear about Mr. Green's alleged trip to Alaska. Shed some light on why Alaska belongs in the green parts of Notamerica.
I hope you guys realize how awesome and beneficial these videos are to public education!
Empire and Napoleon Total War in a nut shell.
Napoleonic War*
***** I love and hate Empire.
Love Because: I was my Frist Total War Game.
Hate because: It ant as Historically Accrete, as it could be.
I played Rome 2 and Attila. Just wish Creative Assembly made Empire 2 or at lest a Medieval Remasterd.
Frist Name Last Name the campaigns fun , I just wish the game was deeper
Keenan d Ya, but it is what it is.
Roi, it IS Napoleon Total War, its a game.
It is nice to see how much this channel has grown, evolved and has shown how they have learned from some of their choice of words, information and imagery to more open, inclusive and unapologetic terms that show a raw history, well w/o fear of expressing the reality of racism, genocides and white supremacy.
Do more videos about the history of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Love the animations.
Yay Panama got mentioned!
We Americans need to assume our divine role as the ruler of the world. Bring back the American empire!
LMGunslinger better ask permission from Israel first
Thank you, John Green! Really needed this for my American imperialism essay!
I wish John would give a better history of Hawai'i in this episode. He kind of acts like they (for the most part) wanted to be annexed. No. The Hawaiian monarchy and government were completely overthrown.
thanks for making my history class a little bit simpler.
i feel like I'm having a stroke reading instead of watching your videos lol
"Spanish-Cuban-Philipino"
"Cuban-Philipino"
"Philipino"
"Philipino"
its "Filipino"
Not in the English translation apparently.
We call ourselves pilipino, if not pinoy, as we don't have an f in our vocabulary.
Kyle Dolor but we put the f because to acknowledge that we were colonize by western powers.
Alexander Chohan ...I’m not even going to question
"So they blamed the Maine on Spain"
Was anyone else thinking that?
Doing American History in college and this video is a God send. Thank you!
Daniel Ryan MURICA
Alex Trimm Yep.
10:22 EMILIANO AGUINALDO??? His name is Emilio Aguinaldo not Emiliano...
Anyone else notice the way kids were saying the pledge at 3:52? It's like their hearts are saluting or something .. never seen that before
I think you should use even MORE numbers. Makes it more visceral, especially when trying to explain to people how barbaric all empires--even ours--are.
2 weeks before Barack Obama was born in Kenya. I laughed so hard.
