John, how could you omit Teddy's amazing speech opener? "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose."
+JonnyEA Same here... I would kill for a DBQ on the progressives, there's so much good stuff. It'll probably be something stupid like the gilded age that no one cares about.
The 4 Presidents in silhouette at 0:27 from left to right are James Buchanan (1857- 1861), Andrew Johnson (1865 - 1869), Warren G. Harding (1921 - 1923), and Franklin Pierce (1853 - 1857). While these 4 were terrible Presidents, I would also put John Tyler in that group. Tyler was a back-stabbing bastard who abandoned his party's agenda once he became President, and even sided with the Confederates when the Civil War broke out. He is both the only President whose death was never acknowledged by Washington D.C. (because of his affiliation to the Confederacy at the time he died in January 1862) and the only President who's coffin is not wrapped with an American flag (Tyler's coffin is wrapped in a Confederate flag).
I am very saddened by all the hate towards Warren G. Harding. He was definitely not on the same level of bad that these others were on. In fact, I've always liked him as a president once I learned about him. Replace that silhouette with Millard Fillmore or as you said John Tyler.
+KmanLEGOStudios Unfortunately, historians do not seem to agree with you and me, as Warren G. Harding has the second worst average ranking of any President, with the worst average ranking belonging to James Buchanan. While mediocre, Harding is not even in my bottom 5. #1 is Andrew Johnson, #2 is James Buchanan, #3 is Franklin Pierce, #4 is Millard Fillmore, #5 is John Tyler. I agree, Tyler or Fillmore would replace Harding just fine in that group.
I think I speak for all CrashCourse fans when I say I would rather hear about this senior prank than anything in history. Though the history stuff is pretty great too.
@PineapplesaareRad The video was taken down by the guy who filmed it a few years ago. But the prank was pretty close to the one John ended up writing in the last few chapters of Looking for Alaska.
Mr. Green this is a very entertaining and informative video. As a middle school history teacher I am curious as to how you choose what you include and emphasis and what you leave out. As a teacher I find those decisions one of the hardest to make. I see that you made these videos in collaboration with your high school teacher. Is high school and older your audience? Thanks.
The so-called "World Series" is called that, not because it takes place on a global level (it doesn't), but actually because its first major sponsor was a newspaper called "The New York World." It's a series, brought to you buy The World(c), in a similar fashion to the Sprint Cup and similar. Before this sponsorship, it was referred to and promoted as "The Championship of the United States." Similarly, the "World Almanac" got its name for the same reason.
GAWD! Teddy Roosevelt is one of my favorite presidents! he started the conservations and he was one of the first pro labor presidents! its really great being in a union when you know the president won't send troops to make you work again when you're on strike!
Incidentally, a lot of cities actually adopted preferential voting, primarily (single transferable vote) STV but some IRV (instant runoff voting) too, which was repealed over the next few decades as the segregationists hated how black people got to vote more effectively. Racism FTW, well, if by winning you mean getting more white votes rather than equal votes.
Dude thank you so much, I procrastinated till last minute to make a 12 slide Teddy Roosevelt presentation due tomorrow! Thank you so much man, props to you!!
Ah, Roosevelt, my favorite president. I mean, apart from the American imperialism thing, I agreed with almost everything he did. Of course, 'the imperialism thing' is kind of a big deal, but that just goes to show that no leader is perfect.
+thirteenguage Wilson was pretty racist for the time though, he had a showing of Birth of a Nation at the White House and then claimed he didn't know what it was about.
Teddy Roosevelt is one of my favorite presidents. No, he wasn't perfect, and I don't agree with everything he did- such as his taking control of Panama Canal- but I do love a lot of his policies, from conservation to the safe food and drug laws to at least attempting to regulate big business without taking it down completely.
Judging on the silhouettes It looks like the 4 not great men are, James Buchanan (Best nickname though) Andrew Johnson, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin Pierce
Hmm, I don’t know much about either Coolidge or Carter, could you explain your reasoning? You are right, their silhouettes are difficult to differentiate.
I also find it deeply upsetting that the presence of the word inconceivable in the mystery document was not taken advantage of for a Princess Bride joke.
+Jay D. Buchanan, Pierce, Johnson, and Harding instead of Carter. Harding fits the caricature better, and is more universally considered to be horrible.
In the video he definitely does, but on his website he says that he had a crush on the female whose voice is in the video, and was trying to seem cool.
"And he had once been governor of New Jersey, so he understood moral indecency!" I'm sorry, New Jersey residents, but I laughed louder at that than I should have. I really am sorry.
The reason why it was called the world series was because the tournament was sponsored by a newspaper called "The World." The name for some reason stuck even though I don't even think the newspaper still exists.
I've been watching this for a long time, so here's what I think on the shock pen thing. 1. The blue electricity is fake. 2. The shock pen in not fake. I've seen it and used it (yes, on purpose). 3. John does seem to be exaggerating with his scream.
You seriously just admitted that you would be able to walk up to any random ten year old on the street and cuss at them. Never mind, I have no idea how you'd get any self esteem anyways.
Okay I read the comment last time you decided to troll someone you decided was ten years old, and while I admit that apparently the initial comment was obvious to everyone else, I thought it might be helpful. And if you're claiming that you wouldn't cuss at a ten year old on the street, I don't know why doing it on the internet makes it any worse.
Saw an anti democratic socialism ad before this. Quite hilarious way to tell me to stop watching the video and close my mind to sharing with my fellow man.
From left to right, confirmed by google images: Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Warren Harding, Franklin Pierce Edit: People who are saying Andrew Jackson, comon be serious, he may not have been the most likeable for some things he did but he definitely was 'great' in how much he influenced the country and politics
I think i got it. In order the 4 presidents are James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Warren G. Harding, and then Franklin Pierce. I did it by matching their silloettes and looking at the worst presidents. I still iffy on Pierce as he doesn't go in order like the rest, but he's the only president who's hair fits.
Pierce fits because he is simply the worst president in history. You can't blame the civil war on one person, but his drunken pro-slavery rants did more to inflame tension than almost anyone else. He is still the only president to not receive his own party's nomination for re-election, and after he left office he ran over and killed a young woman while riding drunk. Really a terrible human being.
twentyninerooks don't forget cronyism and massive corruption in his cabinet though for being so disliked his descendants did well in business and politics or at least married into successful families who did well. Wonder how well they will do if they run jeb bush for president though

bigballsgame i don't thing either of those guys weren't great men. I don't really get all of the personal hate against Obama! He is such a moderate person. He just seems so un-hatable!
christian lincoln People just love the hate the current president if shit doesn't get done. The reason people hate him is the same as Hoover. Both were presidents during some economic depression and both couldn't do enough to help a lot. Honestly Obama is an Okay president he just sold himself so much people expected more from him. It's our Congress we should be hatin' on... our current Congress is the worst we have ever had.
bigballsgame Obama is still president, we don't have the same historical view on his presidency. christian lincoln I think the Obama hate is quite extreme too, although generally stirred up by increasingly divisive news sources. However his frequent use of drone attacks have generated some very understandable distaste and he also holds some pretty extreme pro-choice stances, although he hasn't done much about them since coming into office.
Cian I was going to disagree with you until I saw Jj Jones' post. So, I guess you're right, some people still don't have the objective view. Hey, Jj, Obamacare isn't the only thing going on in the world. It's bad, sure, but not the only thing.
I think this video (as bombastic as it is) does reveal how we moved to the mindset that what is good for corporations is good for America. It turns out that the reverse is true. To the degree that corporations get what they want the people of the world are exploited, not "infused with American values".
LegoGuy87 They both want to protect the environment, want a living wage, worker protections, and probably have a few other progressive similarities. It’s a fair comparison
You gotta love how John says "Hamilton vs Jefferson" and flashes a picture of Hamilton and Burr having a duel.
Me*memories of the whole Hamilton play comes flooding back*

10:44 Fantastic Van Halen reference to the song Panama. I do commend you, good sir.
Theodore Roosevelt was without a doubt my favorite United States president of all time.
Both Roosevelts were pretty epic, really.
His kids had a pet bear after he killed it's mother. He was shot mid speech and kept going. He is the definition of a BOSS
Anthony Serocco nah FDR failed pretty bad
Mine is Thomas Jefferson.
He supported eugenics though

apparently everyone has APUSH while I have regular USH
b3
Oh well.
At least you don't have a final exam
Lucas M but im confused on why apush people and ush people learn the same exact things
b3 we learn the same/similar big topics starting from the Progressive Era, where regular USH begins. APUSH begins in the 1500s.
harlem APUSH is the combination of USH 1 and 2
For a sec I thought u said a-push

see liberal policy works as you see during the progressive era and income inequality under these presidencys were reduced due to regulations

I'm a simple person. I see John Green, I subscribe.
"god I wish we were in Canada"
Theodore Roosevelt was probably the greatest American president of the 20th Century.
If I had a time machine, I'd use it to set up a fist fight between Andrew Jackson and Teddy Roosevelt, the two most bad ass Presidents.
Shane Wright That fist fight would last for six days, with approximately two naps throughout.
haha no yankeenationlist
Shane Wright andrew jackson was a horrible president
Perhaps. Perhaps not. But he would have been a hell of a fist-fighter in his day.
Botswana couldn't have been invited to the World Series until 1966.
I know what you meant though ;)
It would probably have to be a shorter series, but it would definitely be better than how we learned it in grade 10 social studies
I love these. I wish they could predict the future so American History Crash Course wouldn't end.
As a Frenchman I'm... happy to get mentioned! Woohoo! We rock at failing.
James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Franklin Pierce
Jimmy Carter: History's greatest monster.

You should look up John Green's senior prank it really is legendary. He kinda does make it seem like it was his idea a little bit tho lol
where can I find it?
should be able to just search John Green's legendary school prank
***** yeah, just after that I remembered we have google
In the video he definitely does, but on his website he says that he had a crush on the female whose voice is in the video, and was trying to seem cool.
well that's cool to know
"And he had once been governor of New Jersey, so he understood moral indecency!" I'm sorry, New Jersey residents, but I laughed louder at that than I should have. I really am sorry.
Prove the shock pen is real with an ultimeter/voltmeter
Shock pens don't use electricity, they use a form of vibrations.
ah 2013 John...you had no idea what was coming for the presidency
also you could have made a Princess Bride reference at 7:25...missed opportunity :((
The reason why it was called the world series was because the tournament was sponsored by a newspaper called "The World." The name for some reason stuck even though I don't even think the newspaper still exists.
It's should really be called the American, Canadian, and sometimes Japanese series. though that's harder to fit on T-shirts.
It's not a tournament.
I've been watching this for a long time, so here's what I think on the shock pen thing.
1. The blue electricity is fake.
2. The shock pen in not fake. I've seen it and used it (yes, on purpose).
3. John does seem to be exaggerating with his scream.
Good Job.
Here's a cookie.
Wow... The blue electricity is fake?! I don't know what we'd do without you!

Night Creature Single line, ladies and gentlemen. Line forms here to meet the President of the United States. Single line to shake hands with President William McKinley.
At 6:11, all I could think of was Sam and Dean Winchester because of the Moose and Squirrel.... oops xD
and then John said "Canada" and I lost it. I started fangirling so hard....
This really helped me put America into a wider context of late 19th/early 20th century world imperialism. Thanks Crash Course.
I'm going to guess that the not great presidents are Carter, Nixon, Bush Jr. and Hoover.
Obama? I think Carter was better then Obama is.
bigballsgame i don't thing either of those guys weren't great men.
Cian
I was going to disagree with you until I saw Jj Jones' post. So, I guess you're right, some people still don't have the objective view. Hey, Jj, Obamacare isn't the only thing going on in the world. It's bad, sure, but not the only thing.
This is ligit where my History teacher gets all his info from...

"Corporations are just inherently greedy people - but they are people!" LOL U.S. History jokes. :P
Somehow you forgot to mention that Wilsonian "Progressivism" included extending Jim Crow to the Federal Government, the Army and Washington DC!!!

Josh Films lets get it

lol
I think this video (as bombastic as it is) does reveal how we moved to the mindset that what is good for corporations is good for America. It turns out that the reverse is true. To the degree that corporations get what they want the people of the world are exploited, not "infused with American values".
If I ever become a politician I’m gonna modal myself after teddy only more modern.
So Bernie Sanders, AOC
@LegoGuy87 There both progressives
LegoGuy87 They both want to protect the environment, want a living wage, worker protections, and probably have a few other progressive similarities. It’s a fair comparison
