really? What was the gulf war, Iraq, Syria, the White wars in Yugoslavia (my personal term for them) and if some people get their way Iran? There’s still Americans who support war. There’s always madmen in a country

Shadow Planthead The American population hates war on a high level. To the point where soldiers who fought in them can be harassed for being in them. The American government doesn’t count as the American population. Of course there’s also people who support war there always will be. But Americans used to support war on a much higher level, world war 2 was a supported and justified war for them, and it killed much more people than any of those wars combined.

You can say that again. If you are curious about how badly the loss of Cuba affected the Spaniards, I recommend you to inform yourselves about the literary movement that followed this war, named the "98 Generation" ("Generación del 98"). Many of Spain's most famous writers of all time came from this period, and if you know anything about Spanish literature, you know that's saying A LOT!
It was a period of pessimistic self-reflection, which changed Spanish society to such a deep degree we still feel today. It was basically when Spain started to developed a MASSIVE inferiority complex, later on exacerbated by the Civil War and Franco, that's been a load ever since.

@Griff the Pyrate Bastard People like talking down on "powerful" people without probably ever reading any history. There have been endless examples of chivalry from the middle ages down to the 18th century of aristocrats who back then would be the only ones in the army and gladly layed down their lives even though they had more comfortable lives than the rest of the population. Like battle of Fontenoy in 1745. The French lost many regiment colonels who were aristocrats leading the front line despite them winning the battle. In Fontenoy, British and French officers were arguing politely on who gets to fire on each other first, which became legendary.
And they were all aristocrats. Even the king Louis XV refused thrice to withdraw to safety when told to do so who was present in the battle.
Spain by the Spanish American war still held such close old fashion beliefs close to heart, because they were monarchy.
Do not for one minute ever consider holding people of today who are "powerful" who have money and are rich private citizens on the same levels to old aristocracy. Real power doesn't come from your money it comes from the heart, money usually followed it. And if your heart goes bad, your money leaves you also, it's only a question of time.

Its kind of hilarious to me how many times America has gone to war over frankly dubious reasons.
      The war of 1812
America: stop kidnaping our sailors to serve in your military.
      England: yeah whatever.
America: I'm gonna use this as an excuse to invade Canada
England: Whatever, I don't care, I have France to fight.
      The Mexican American War
America moves troops onto disputed land and Mexico fires.
Polk: American blood has stained the land we must seek revenge!
Congress: what land? we don't own it? oh whatever, do what you want.
      America conquers half of mexico.
      The Spanish American War
      Maine explodes
Spain: so I examined this and it was just an accident
      America: WAR WAR WAR WAR
Spain: you aren't listening to me are you?
      America WAR!
      World War 1
      The Zimmerman Note
Wilson: this sounds like bullshit made up by the UK but whatever if it gets this country to fight so be it.
      Vietnam War
      The Gulf of Tonkin incident
Johnson: the North Vietnamese have attacked our ships unprovoked. We must go to war.
Navy: Um... what are you talking about-
      Congress: War!
      The Iraq War
Bush administration: Iraq has weapons of Mass destruction!
CIA currently suffering from a bad case of group think: yes I confirmed it
State Department: bruh, this is fake.
      Bush Administration: Shut Up. War!
Pentagon: this is going to be very expensive.
      Bush Administration: no it won't!
      Republican Party: War!
      the public: War!

    • @Moonlitwatersofaqua
      @Moonlitwatersofaqua 3 года назад +1

The only one that isn't dubious is the Zimmerman Note. but its so ludicrous that I include it anyway.
With the War of 1812 England had apologized for impressing American sailors and tried to resolve the conflict. but communication in 1812 was terrible. Nevermind the fact there were factions in the United states who were looking for a war.
The Mexican American War was controversial during its time because the land that Mexico shot American soldiers on was disputed and America purposefully put them there. Most likely they were put there to incite a war.
The Maine blew up due to an internal malfunction. Spain assessed the wreck and that was what they found at the time. But the war still happened due to yellow Journalism rallying the public up for War. and a few decades later the Americans assessed the ship and came to the same conclusion.
The Gulf of Tonkin incident is to this day debated about whether it even occurred. And that officially started the Vietnam War.
The Iraq War started because the Bush administration was looking for any reason to invade Iraq. They found proof of Weapons of Mass Destruction in a source that was known to be a fake lead. but the Bush Administration facilitated an environment of group think in America's intelligence community to press out anyone who disagreed with invading Iraq. The Iraq War intelligence analysis done by the CIA and other intelligence studies is now used as a case study on how not to do your job as an analyst.

@@nehankaranch2149 I'm actually quite nationalistic, thank you very much. I spent a lot of time studying studying the Iraq War. Iraq was not an unstable dictatorship. It was not in threat of collapse. And it was not a country that was prone to attacking its neighbors. It had lost that capability after the Persian Gulf War. The Iraq War was initially about removing Weapons of Mass Destruction from the country and it was further justified by supposed links to Al Qaeda. Both reasons ended up having no basis so "Spreading Democracy" was an attempt to rebrand the mission by the Bush Administration and save face.

They would have. Spain has proper German equipment and Cuba could be sustained. The Spanish held no chance at sea, but this was not a problem, Cuba was a large and populated island that could sustain a war effort. What led Spain to lose was it's incompetent leadership, not at the top but at the bottom. Officers of the Spanish army constantly withdrew and retreated in Cuba, even when they were ready to fight, for example in Puerto Rico, where this wasn't as common, the Americans had an extremely hard time. Also, the Spanish fleet sent to relieve the Philippines could've gotten to the Philippines but the British were pro-American so the Spanish took extra time to pass through the Suez canal.
