It's only possible to watch crash course and understand what John (or Hank) is saying IF you've already fully learned everything covered in the video. Otherwise you're screwed. At least for me, crash course is only for review and reinforcing information
Jet Hayes I'm a History major as well. I mainly use it as a quick refresher before exams while going over notes. Although in the case of this video I'm just watching it for fun seeing as my exams tomorrow are dealing with Neolithic to 1500 C.E and World War II. :P
I'm really glad you mentioned the importance of local collaborators. That's really underrepresented in descriptions of imperialism. From my high school education I assumed Mighty Whitey rolled in and conquered everything. It took me years to understand that native rulers decided to side with the winners and work out the best deals to maintain the local status quo under foreign domination, and in doing so have an effect on that foreign domination.
Yeah, and working with local collaborators is not a very new system, either. Lots of empires had done the same before (ancient Persia, Rome, etc.), as it helps ensure regional stability, which is really useful for tax collection, resource extraction, and military allocation/ distribution. Life for the vast majority undergoes only very minimal change... Which is why the Dutch, Brits etc often discouraged missionary activity in their colonies-- it could contribute to social instability which could either topple the whole system or make it much less profitable-- stability is good for money!
India is the best example, 90% of the British army in India was made up of Indians, and 50% of the subcontinent was still governed by local rulers rather than British governors. As Hitler once said, if all the Indians spat at once they'd be able to drown their "British overlords".

I wait and anticipate the famous "wait for it.... The Mongols!" in every world history video. The writers and producers of this channel use it perfectly in almost every video. Amazing content.
Guns, Germs and Steel is a good crash course into this topic but the arguments it makes are inadequate and serve as a small picture of a much more nuanced anthropological understanding of human history. While this is still the prevailing explination up to High School AP, it rarely is the serious focus of more advanced levels of historical theory these days. We can all appreciate Diamond's work (especially in refuting prior racist historical theories claiming European supremacy purely by divine, cultural, or genetic right.) but in many ways the book overcorrects to the point of rendering most human agency null against a grand geographical lottery. Since the book's release, it has been used by many to let the west off the hook for inequality and exploitation under the excuse of geographical determinism. The truth, as always, is very complex and messy.
For a much more complete and intricate refutation of Modernisation Theory than "Guns, Germs, and Steel", I recommend "The Colonizer's Model of the World" by James Blaut (published before Diamond's book... because these debates are not new among historians.)
I really really REALLY need to stop reading the comments to these videos, because it seems 95% of the viewers don't get it. At best, they skim through this on a superficial level, looking for something to piss them off, and then when validated by a rather mundane detail, they go to town. At worst, they come here, complete with their own rigid, stubborn, never-to-be-enlightened agendas, much more pleased with discarding thoughtful and educated discourse and opting for bold, not-thought-through declarations. Occasionally someone will put some heart and soul into a comment. Not very often, but once in a while. Like... As a history major, Green doesn't surprise me with concept. Details, yes, but the overarching historical and social concepts, I already have a good grasp on, and I enjoy his take on them. Occasionally he presents something that I hadn't considered. Truly, the phase of world imperialism he's referring to in this video is actually rather short, only from about 1830 to the end of World War II. We think of Europe dominating Africa for centuries, but the reality he presents is, it only happened when warfaring technology gave the Europeans such a decided advantage. So it begs the question, especially considering Sub-Saharan Africa, how did the UK, France, Belgium, Portugal, and any other power so deeply disturb the continent that it became a collection of nation basket cases, post-colonialism? If Africa and Europe had been battling each other, each more or less holding its own for pretty much all of history and probably before that, how did the European powers so deeply screw the continent up that now we see them as little more than corrupt nations ignoring the plight of their people, one civil war after another with the occasional smattering of genocide, perpetual guerrilla outfits armed by the superpowers, starving children with bloated bellies and flies on their faces, and Ebola and HIV roaming the streets like the Grim Reaper incarnate? How did a continent of proud peoples become THIS?
If I had to pin it down to one reason, like Horrible-Artist699 above I'd guess it's a lack of an educated populace. But that's not the fault of the colonizers. Other reasons that come to mind: 20-century population explosion, arbitrary grouping of nations, extreme linguistic diversity and deliberate sabotage... but these challenges would have been a lot less devastating if not for the precipitous difference in technologies (both "hard" and "soft") compared with external polities (and their compounding advances taking off particularly in that century) -- this includes education, infrastructure (cf. Asia) and all the things that make anything larger than a complex chiefdom possible. And then there's the inherent fragility in societies (or basically anything that isn't a pyramid of tessellated rocks).
"How did a continent of proud peoples become THIS?" They never were proud. They didn't even develop a system of writing. Africa now is better than it has ever been. Child mortality is at its lowest, poverty is at its lowest and it's more egalitarian now than it has ever been.
Hi! Just a note from a New Zealander... "Maori" is pronounced more like Maa-ree, rather than may-or-ee. But well done and thank you for saying "The Maori" and not "Maoris"!!! Almost no-one gets that right, even here!

Thank you so much for the amazing work done. So many of the history textbooks leave out important anecdotes like the way my ancestors ie the Africans resisted Colonial rule aggressively. I am happy that you give a wonderful positive updated view of people from my continent. We are often misrepresented and misunderstood by western media most especially. Imperialism is the true form of capitalism. Modern capitalism would never have been possible without it. Even though most of the world's imperialist expansion came about in the 19th century, imperialism still exists. The only thing which has changed is the language used to describe imperial conquest: expanding markets, collateral damage, spreading democracy, opening new markets, foreign aid loans, etc.

Airis Dämon Yes, that's why I mentioned the Mercantilism was supported by European Monarchies. One example was the British East India corporation. When it was in trouble it ran back to the British Crown.

While modern capitalism relied on imperialism for its existence, that's hardly an argument as all modern economic structures exist because of a functioning (sometimes) global trade network which was only made possible by imperialism.

Wtf is a Mayori? Maori is pronounced Mow-ree, or Mau-ree. Why do Americans struggle with that? New Zealanders don't have any difficulty pronouncing Aztec or Apache or Iroquois.

And of course we would naturally know more about Maori and how to say it but we still make the effort to pronounce words not indigenous to NZ. It's not difficult. Besides, he should've checked the pronounciation on his trusty laptop like he does everything else...

Americans will, in general, only come in contact with the name Maori once or twice in their lives so they don't really need to know how to pronounce it.

When it was a religious war, people use God as their reasoning. But then when it was the invasion and colonisation of other weaker countries, they say they are "helping the locals to advance" and those in colonies should "thank them". Ha. Ha. Ha.
Liou David It's true though, especially in the case of the British. What was better before in these counties? Literacy? Standard of living? Life expectancy? Infrastructure? Human Rights?
They do bring some benefits, but you can't really say it's a fair trade when then plunder your nation's resources, import labours, and made deals and agreements that can still have an effect today, usually to the benefit of the British. Plus, they are incredibly good in the divide and conquer strategy to make the locals fight among themselves instead of their "masters". Not really a gentleman's way of doing things, as they try to make the world believe (at least at that time). And what's the point of colonising when they don't defend it in an event of an attack? (Malaya and Borneo, etc)

I don't think the Mongols could, because they were strongest on horse back, and that African disease killed horses. They might have been able to conquer some of the first countries they got to, but not all of Africa. Just a thought.

There is a popular sentiment of undermining those in the 'third world' as undeveloped, backwards, dictator-infested, and by some, genetically inferior. It's always interesting hearing those who are proponents of Imperialism believing that an invading force building and eventually leaving infrastructure somehow justifies the whole process of subjugation of people in their own native land and extraction of whatever resources and benefits the land and people had to offer and might have been willing to trade and use to make themselves strong. This type of thinking is just absolutely stupid, as it seems to forget that this infrastructure was not built for the natives as some type of gift to them. It was built for the purposes of the conquerors who believed they would hold onto these places forever, and when they were forced to leave, simply didn't want to put the time and effort in taking this infrastructure down. I wonder if these proponents would be so eager to trade independence and freedom in their own land for development by a conquering power, if not, then they should understand why even with all this "benevolence" by a conquering power the natives of once colonial lands aren't too happy.

If I had to pin it down to one reason, like Horrible-Artist699 above I'd guess it's a lack of an educated populace. But that's not the fault of the colonizers.
Other reasons that come to mind: 20-century population explosion, arbitrary grouping of nations, extreme linguistic diversity and deliberate sabotage... but these challenges would have been a lot less devastating if not for the precipitous difference in technologies (both "hard" and "soft") compared with external polities (and their compounding advances taking off particularly in that century) -- this includes education, infrastructure (cf. Asia) and all the things that make anything larger than a complex chiefdom possible.
And then there's the inherent fragility in societies (or basically anything that isn't a pyramid of tessellated rocks).

They never were proud. They didn't even develop a system of writing. Africa now is better than it has ever been. Child mortality is at its lowest, poverty is at its lowest and it's more egalitarian now than it has ever been.

I am happy that you give a wonderful positive updated view of people from my continent. We are often misrepresented and misunderstood by western media most especially. Imperialism is the true form of capitalism. Modern capitalism would never have been possible without it. Even though most of the world's imperialist expansion came about in the 19th century, imperialism still exists. The only thing which has changed is the language used to describe imperial conquest: expanding markets, collateral damage, spreading democracy, opening new markets, foreign aid loans, etc.

Why are you even asking us this question. It's pretty self explanatory. We're U.S American, which means we had little knowledge of the people at all. You're going to have more knowledge on the subject of them naturally.

Exactly what I was thinking! It took me a while to realise he was talking about NZ. And of course we would naturally know more about Maori and how to say it but we still make the effort to pronounce words not indigenous to NZ. It's not difficult. Besides, he should've checked the pronounciation on his trusty laptop like he does everything else...

Americans will, in general, only come in contact with the name Maori once or twice in their lives so they don't really need to know how to pronounce it.

Liou David It's true though, especially in the case of the British. What was better before in these counties? Literacy? Standard of living? Life expectancy? Infrastructure? Human Rights?
They do bring some benefits, but you can't really say it's a fair trade when then plunder your nation's resources, import labours, and made deals and agreements that can still have an effect today, usually to the benefit of the British. Plus, they are incredibly good in the divide and conquer strategy to make the locals fight among themselves instead of their "masters".
Not really a gentleman's way of doing things, as they try to make the world believe (at least at that time). And what's the point of colonising when they don't defend it in an event of an attack? (Malaya and Borneo, etc)

There is a popular sentiment of undermining those in the 'third world' as undeveloped, backwards, dictator-infested, and by some, genetically inferior. You should do a video about the cultural impacts of imperialism.
It's always interesting hearing those who are proponents of Imperialism believing that an invading force building and eventually leaving infrastructure somehow justifies the whole process of subjugation of people in their own native land and extraction of whatever resources and benefits the land and people had to offer and might have been willing to trade and use to make themselves strong. This type of thinking is just absolutely stupid, as it seems to forget that this infrastructure was not built for the natives as some type of gift to them. It was built for the purposes of the conquerors who believed they would hold onto these places forever, and when they were forced to leave, simply didn't want to put the time and effort in taking this infrastructure down. I wonder if these proponents would be so eager to trade independence and freedom in their own land for development by a conquering power, if not, then they should understand why even with all this "benevolence" by a conquering power the natives of once colonial lands aren't too happy.
