  • THE NARCISSIST: I’m on the verge of RUclips burnout, caught in the wicked world of shoot, make, upload, repeat. It’s a good life, and this ain’t a grizzle, no, it’s more of a reflection of how I’ve been sucked into the belief that more is better and consistency is king. I’m sure this can be the case, but it sucks to live by it. And I haven’t fished in too long, and I like fishing. I’m patient when I fish. In fact it’s one of the only places I’m happy to wait.
Today is a day of attention restoration. Listening to my wandering mind. Paying attention to how and where a fish might be. And trying to do as much as I can while doing as little as possible.

Your comments reminded me of something Thomas Merton once wrote:
When an archer is shooting for nothing
    He has all his skill.
If he shoots for a brass buckle
    He is already nervous.
If he shoots for a prize of gold
    He goes blind
    Or sees two targets -
He is out of his mind.
His skill has not changed, But the prize
    Divides him. He cares,
    He thinks more of winning
    Than of shooting -
    And the need to win
    Drains him of power.

"Slower with Uploads" - Welcome to my world!
Beau, your candid reflection in 'Get Over Yourself' really resonates. The way you equate the relentless cycle of content creation to a fisherman's day out-aiming not just to catch fish, but to enjoy the solitude and process-strikes a powerful chord. It's a poignant reminder of the importance of balancing our ambitions with our well-being. Much like the Australian red fox, you find yourself in an environment you've adapted to thrive in, yet the pressures are ever-present. Here’s to finding more of those peaceful moments by the water, where the real catch isn't fish, but a bit of tranquility and self-acceptance. Keep navigating these waters, Beau, your journey helps all of us reflect on our own.

I always loved that your uploads are not as frequent as the usual content-mania, we're living in. For me it was such a core quality of your stuff, that it happend in a different pace. A pace, which felt so much more natural, genuine and healthy to me.
I make my living from being an Artist myself and I definitely know that nagging feeling, you're describing. But I truly believe that especially we as creators should be aware, that keepin up the fun is not a trivial side-hustle, but actually our Main Quest.
To go again that dulling hurry and fight for the space, the calmness, the patience and the love, which that golden spark of creativity needs to glow.

  • @makingthedreamhappen4918
    @makingthedreamhappen4918 13 дней назад +2

Life is like a water butt.
It starts fresh and full of potential,
Slowly, over time filling with water.
That water can bring life and energy to that, can absorb.
The more we drain that butt, the less that is left. Take from it too often, it shall become empty. But give that butt some time, it shall refill, brimming once again.
You can't keep taking from what is empty, you need to give things time for the ideas, the spark, the fire within to bring life to our ideas.
I love your content beau, I think your spin on things is just great! It seems we are all trying to find some meaning to what we call life. And your content definitely strikes a match within me. Thank you for all the effort and time you go to, to share a small glimpse of your journey through what we call life!

@@kiprs They really do, and youtubers need to take a joke, not take offense, get off their high horse and, yes, "get over themselves". What that bro said was a very appropriate commentary of this youtube culture we live in, where we meet people filming themselves. So instead of coming over to say hello or shake hands, they turn around and go away to not "ruin their shot". These people are doing content in public all over... they are everywhere... on the bus, on the train, while running, climbing, skiing, boating, whatever. Always talking to their invisible audience, having their effing gopros phonesticks tripods and their drones and talking by themselves about what THEY DO. It is annoying to the normal people. But... when you try to get away to some remote place like a lake or mountain or trail, and you see THE EXACT SAME PEOPLE, even there, is DOUBLE ANNOYING. I've seen people getting angry, rightfully so, when people drive their drones over the lake, scaring the fish away. This is asshole behaviour. Or doing shitty "challenges" or pranks on people who are not in on it. This is the sad reality on "content creators". Of course some are different and I think Beau is, in all honesty. He takes a joke, enjoys what he does and does not bother people. This content, I like. But overall, most people are sick of youtubers.

I don't get a large reception to my videos as my channel is small and niche, but I still enjoy doing it.
Keep making videos mate, I enjoy yours and they seem to be the most down to earth ones I see on RUclips. Thanks.

Another great video thanks Beau. I really loved the camera work and some of the shots of the water really made me want to go out and enjoy nature some more.
Having stumbled apon your videos of trekking across Australia I instantly subscribed. I'll watch whatever you put up whenever you put it up. I am not expecting a weekly or monthly video nor have you set that expectation so please go easy on yourself. Post something whenever you feel its ready for the world to see ill still be here.
Just remember to enjoy your life one day at a time as it comes. Only you can judge the enjoyment you are having dont let others or metrics or money dictate that for you.

Thank you Beau, as an artist I suffer from burn out ALOT and you are 100% right. Sometimes the best thing to do is to try, mess up and not be scared of making a bad decision. Not everything we make needs to be perfect because that's just who we are at the end of the day. We learn from that.

Thank you for not staging a caught fish just to end the video on a high note. We don't need a Disney ending.
Also, as a long time watcher (and reader), this is why we are here - the insights from your canoe transcend 99% of the content on youtube. I hope that you can keep making videos like this, but never at the expense of the larger stories that need to be told. Anyway.. cheers from a Canadian fan.

Beau, just keep being authentic and make quality videos. Make them long, make them short, make them weekly, make them 6 monthly, doesn't matter. Too many make it a business, overthink it, and their authenticity suffers. You have so many subscribers because you are authentic. For me personally I am inspired by you. I have mental health issues and its easy for me to fall into a funk and become super lazy. I've got a million things to do and it becomes easy to not do any of them. I see a new upload from you or the algorithm tells me to watch you run a marathon over 24 hours and BOOM! I'm motivated. Anyway, enough about me. You be you.

I’ve heard another redhead, Conan O’Brien, make a point about audience expectations. When a guest admits they're not doing well in an interview, the audience, previously unaware, suddenly perceives it as a flop, and the energy drops.
So, believe in yourself Beau, your abilities, and your presence here. Your audience is watching because you've got something worth sharing.

    Hey Beau,
I just wanted to say thank your for your videos. I'm following since, I don't know anymore how long. Probably since the running a mile every hour video.
For myself your videos are great way to calm me down because you as a person are just as calm as it can be. Even the videos which are more energetic do that for me. Because your videos are somewhat you. Authentic.
I'm grateful that I can look into your life as an Austrailian and how you think and react in certain situations. I live in Hamburg Germany, a high density human area where time is of highest value.
As it's for me watching your videos to ground myself I think it's always important to understand each other and your videos are doing a great part for it extending my horizon.
Always think outside of the box and look around the corner. And keep your brain young.
Quality over Quantity is in most times a good idea to keep yourself sane.
I hope you get what I mean. :)

This spoke to me. Even though I'm not a youtuber, we all get tangled in the same net of relentless productivity-drivenness. Often being productive in areas we wish we didn't have to be, and less productive in the areas we wish we were. Being a good husband, wife, son, daughter, father, mother, grandchild. Less productive at enjoying the things we enjoy and more productive at bearing with the tasks we need to bear to get by. That's life, and we all have to do it.
I appreciate this advice though: "Head out with the wrong lures, at a shitty time of day, and don't catch a thing." As someone who's gone fishing for the first time ever a couple of weekends ago, this is very good advice. Trying to get to whatever "moderation" is in life between jobs, family or fun for fun's sake, is a lifelong game of its own.
I'm confident you'll figure out the RUclips thing Beau, given the way you just ooze storytelling ability. For some reason lately, even though I'm not on patreon, I had also been suspecting the need to upload weighs on you. Personally, I don't mind infrequent uploads, cause I don't pay in anything other than views. I appreciate a man who won't produce anything less than his best efforts.

Brilliant Beau! I think you’re on to something… and it’s just not for RUclipsrs - in any profession, we immerse ourselves in it, and it intertwines with our identity- in someways like that blackberry and the gum stump. And really taking the time to find a quiet spot to assess who we are, our vision for ourselves and get in touch with mother nature and our nature - it’s important and it’s good for the soul.

Taking a break from work while also working during the break. This theme has come up in plenty of Beau's films along the way and it always ends with the same conclusion, stop worrying, you're okay...... and I think it's bloody true. There's no good if there's no bad and no fun if there's no work in the same manner. Both sides must thrive to achieve equilibrium and that's the beauty of it really, The beauty of balance.

Hi Beau, watching this reminded me of a RUclips talk that suggested some brains require more "friction" to be happy - with the absence of the sabre tooth tiger in our rather easy modern lives, we seek out "challenges" to our survival. Modern convenience has evolved faster than our physiology. I don't know you Beau, but you seem like a bloke who wants to share his experience of life - a life you seem want to make as challenging as possible for your own happiness. Making RUclips content may be another form of that friction. Who knows, you may have been a wrestler of tigers in the past, or lions in the Roman colosseum, and you would still have an audience. I've enjoyed many of your vids, thanks for sharing.

Just knowing that this man exists on the other side of the globe makes life a bit more bearable. Aside from a long list of what makes Beau's films great - this sort or reflection is the single most important one for me. Sure, some of the footage may seem mundane at times, but that does't in the least take away from the film's insight. If anything, it elevates it. Keep going at your own pace, mate! Your content is among the very best on YT.

This one really hit home Beau. It's the reason I've always struggled to be consistent with my uploads. There's relentless pressure to create videos that are bigger, better, and more... everything. If a video doesn't have great click potential, why even upload it? You're right, the fillers are the ones that we want to make, the ones we make for ourselves, the ones that are fun for us. You rock.

I heard some great advice for dating that I think you could apply to your videos. Basically, when you take someone for a date pick a place you’ve been wanting to go to anyway. You’ll have fun because you’re doing what you love, coming off better, but most of all even if the date itself doesn’t go too well you’ll still have fun because it’s what you want to do.
Pick some adventures you’ve been looking for an excuse to do. It’s not bad to be narcissistic, you’ve just got to remember to be a proper narcissist. Don’t think about the other people in this world, do what you love and people will gravitate to you.
You feel like you have to give us Beau because the people fell in love with Beau through your videos. But that didn’t start from trying to meet current expectations.
