I would use the original size smaller fuses in that case. The new relay is likely a generic application for many different bikes. The original size fuse will be correct for your specific bike circuits.

The starter relay is the cheapest easiest thing to try. Just make sure you have a good battery in the bike first. A few month later my bike ended up needing a starter as well but I don’t think starters are common on the older style bikes like yours.
Hey man I just bought a new battery, noco lithium ytz10s format, and expected better cold starts but its worse. Had numerous issues getting here with tank rust and I'm thinking I wore out the starter or starter relay. Starts fine after some riding just cold starts are always a problem. Think it could be the relay? Or maybe starter?
Sounds very similar to my issues that I was having. The relay did fix my issue for most of the summer. I ended up needing a starter as well though. Both parts are common failure points unfortunately. I started with the relay just because it’s cheap and quick to try. The starter is a pretty big job but will likely be the root cause of your issue. My cold start issues have been perfect after my starter replacement. I do have a video on my channel where I replaced my starter if you want to check out the process. My starter was destroyed! I have links in the video description to the parts I used and have had success with.

Not overly difficult but it is time consuming. It’s a tight fit and originally I didn’t know what area it was going to wiggle out from. I wasted a lot of time trying do the job without draining the coolant as well. It took me roughly 4hrs if I remember correctly. @@JT2JZ yes It did, but then it stopped starting. Got a brand new battery & still clicking. Tomorrow I’m going to get new fuses to see if that’s it, but they look fine
From that test the starter sounds ok. Make sure there is no corrosion in your starter relay connector. I had some in mine.
Hey man, having the same problem on 2012 R1 only 5k miles but been sitting and I just got it, rode it 2 hours home, now its doing this. When i touched 2 wrenches together on the relay it started. Got some advice to get a new relay and that I may also need a new start button on the handlebar as well even though it makes the clicking noise yours does. What do you think? I just need the relay? I already ordered it. Thanks
Sounds like just the relay to me. I think you made the right decision
My bike is cranking without starting and backfiring I will order this relay and change it thanks for tip
Definitely the easiest thing to try.
Make sure you have a good battery. If you still have issues down the road it may be a weak starter.
Didn't fix my 2010 starting problem. Tried the same $40 relay you used and also tries am OEM relay at $120 and made no difference either.
I would make sure your starter is good. My starter ended up completely failing and leaving me stranded later that same season.
Check out my starter replacement video if you are curious how bad mine was.
I almost think that I have the same problem bcuz when I start my 2000 R1 it turns over but won't come on so do u think that if I change the starter relay do u think that will get my R1 running? In desperate need on ur input bcuz I jus want to get my R1 back on the road. Thanks for ur time much appreciated on ur input......thanks by the way love ur R1 really clean, bro
@@JT2JZ thanks man, really appreciate the thorough reply! Very very helpful! Deleting my questions as they're answered in your video haha
@@JT2JZ also I only quickly browsed but it seems like you haven't put up much new content lately. You make very informative videos. As the proud owner of a total pita R1 that likes to hurt my time/money situation, I'm obviously biased, but your other content was fun to watch, hoping to see you keep it up.
Not overly difficult but it is time consuming. It’s a tight fit and originally I didn’t know what area it was going to wiggle out from. I wasted a lot of time trying do the job without draining the coolant as well. It took me roughly 4hrs if I remember correctly.
Learn from my mistakes and just drain the coolant right away so your not struggling. You will see what I mean when you watch the video. The starter wiggles straight out the left side of the frame by the thermostat and coolant tank.
Thanks for the support. I have a lot of other fun videos ideas that will be coming soon. I just need to find the free time to make them.
Do you have the link for the relay
Yes check the link in the description below
I wish you would of showed how to fully install it.
Feel free to ask questions and I will try and help. It should be a relatively easy swap for you.
@@JT2JZ bike won’t start with check engine light so I assume it’s either the starter relay , the stator and or rectifier so I’m changing all three of them at once. Any tips air advice ?
Does the bike crank over?
I don’t think it would be the stator causing your issue.
A weak starter is a common issue on these bikes
@@JT2JZ I already ordered a new stator flywheel and gasket along with a new rectifier and relay solenoid. The bike will turn on if I charge it for a while. Then when I drive it power gives out and won’t start with check engine light. Gonna replace those things I mentioned hope it fixes my issue but u suggest changing starter as well ? Just put a new battery in there as ell
Sounds like your on the right path. Your symptoms are different than mine. I’d hold off on the starter.
Maybe try and scan it for the check engine light.
I have the same issue on a YZFR 125
Thank you very much 😎👍🏼 I over looked the basics !
Hopefully this helps. If not check out my other starter replacement video.
Thank you..i had all those symptoms. Helpful
I’m glad I could help
For the record a starter relay cost me $au160 in Australia. Genuine Yamaha part though. Simple problem fixed. 👊
That’s expensive for what it is. Genuine parts are likely better quality though. I’m glad you got your issue fixed!
@@JT2JZ thanks again man, I subbed
No worries. Thanks for the support
I've got a like almost the same issue, and I hope that this exactly or at least a similar issue with my R1. I checked and battery seems good. When I start the bike will crank and try to start but it just won't go on. Do you think it might be the same problem? and I always hear a click exactly the same under the seat.
It’s definitely a cheap part to start with. This repair worked on my bike for most of the season but I ended up needing a starter roughly 2000kms later.
Is there anyone can help me my r1 not showing settings menu even i press the menu and hold cant show the setting please help what is the problem
I’ve never ran into that issue before. Might be an issue with the cluster or button.
cost me 5$, using another bike part,(yamaha byson 150cc) same part does the same job, and also authentic yamaha part
Good to know. Thanks for the info!
Is there a junk yard for bikes I need one right now
When I ordered from Amazon it showed up relatively quick depending on your location.
@JT2JZ thanks for the response. I found it on Amazon. But I look through the manual and is said not to use different sized fuses b/c of a few reasons. But matey I can order it with the right fuse and switch it out.
Even if the fuses are the wrong size on the new relay just reuse the original fuses in your bike right now.
👍👍👍very helpfull👍👍👍
I have this problem bro
The relay is an easy item to try
Dielectric is an insulator, not a conductor
You are correct. The dielectric grease is to help prevent corrosion.
I’m pretty sure this is what is killing my batt
Corrosion can definitely cause some gremlins
Niceee, its doing the same for me
This is definitely the easiest thing to try. I believe my starter is weak as well though. I will be swapping mine out soon and likely make another video
onb cuh
thanks
Glad I could help 👌
