    Summary: I met with Manu Prakash from Stanford to talk about 2 of his labs' inventions the Foldscope and the Paperfuge. Combined these cost only 68 cents and they can be used to diagnose Malaria. Both of these are examples not only of simple, brilliant design, but of how engineering is used to make a positive dent in the world.

    It wasnt invented at all in stanford, they just innovated on an ancient microscope design known as a leeuwenhoek single sphere lens microscope. There is a massive difference between inventing something and innovating upon sonething, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek deserves all the credit for the original design as well as over 100 microscope patents that HE INVENTED from 1640 - 1723 and is recognized as the father of microscopy and microbiology.

    • @chloekaftan
      @chloekaftan Год назад

      @@Charles-hq7ce i'll defer to the one who invented more than 100 different microscope patents to the one who "supposedly" only made one, because for all we know it was stolen. there were also variations of microscopes invented by the church for transcription but since they didn't zoom into microscopic levels they dont really count.

    For people who own personal digital cutters like a Brother Scan N Cut, cricut, cameo, etc the foldscope could be sold / downloaded as a .SVG to be cutout by anyone with one of these types of machines. The lens and a light source are all that remains for the physical portion of it. Or use the built-in scanner on the ScanNCut to make a cut-to-data version of the paper portion of it. Ditto for the disc portion of the centrifuge.

    I just knew this invention came from an Indian when you said that it doesn't even cost a dollar & can do the job of equipments costing thousands of dollars.

    • @YaminRahman

      It is pretty self-explanatory, to be honest. Indians have a history of engineering and intelligence (Which Americans lack, lol) that revolves around helping others in an environment where the majority of people are poor, helpless, and unable to support their families. I am not saying that people from other countries do not possess these qualities, I am just saying that since India currently has a population of 1 billion people packed together, it is not hard to find intelligent people who wants to improve the lives of everyone suffering the same thing.

    American hospitals would probaly buy and use this instead of the normal transfusion machines to save money and then charge $80 for the malaria check.

      Only 80? You're missing a few zeros there, if you want to mimic the complete mess that is the American healthcare system.

    • @vicgamesvt9682
      @vicgamesvt9682 3 года назад +59

      @@leyren2606 oh yeah you guys are right $80 is the cost for a cotton swab and a Salt water bag cost $120 the actual cost for this would be around $8000 just for your one malaria check at the hospital.

    • @vicgamesvt9682
      @vicgamesvt9682 3 года назад +13

      Yeah I am quite aware that American hospitals are a mess but I have never been to one because I'm a Canadian so that's why my cost for a transfusion was so low but I know in reality it cost $150 just to go to the hospital and the transfusion would probably be $100 instead of $80
