    Thank you, thank you for uploading this gem. I still believe that Olga Korbut deserved various 10s way before the also perfect Nadia. But Olga came first. What a style, what a technique. So graceful. I'll never understand why they were so strict in the judgements, only 4 years before Comaneci era. You recognize perfection when you see it, and that's what Olga Korbut's gymnastic style was. Perfect.

      I love Nadia Comaneci, she's been my idol for all my youth - and still is - but there's no need to scream it. I just think that Olga Korbut was perfect way before her, not that's better than her. They've been gorgeous both.

      @@giorgosfylaktou2610 Half of Comaneci's routine was taken from Tourischeva's. She was an amazing gymnast and for that year or two she was perfection. But without Olga there is no Nadia. There is no modern gymnastics. You can see the modern sport being born with everything Korbut did. She was robbed of the gold in the bars and had she not screwed up she would have won the all-around. If you watch Korbut's bar routine there is not one millisecond where she isn't flying. In Janz's routine there is a huge break where she has to fight to regain momentum. Comaneci was as technically perfect a gymnast as there ever was but she probably wouldn't even have happened if not for Korbut in 1972.

      Olga was the Revolution.
      From The Guardian - 50 stunning Olympic moments: Olga Korbut redefines gymnastics: "Not everyone loved Korbut’s influence. Some sniffy officials were hostile to the change that she ushered in, which they equated to turning gymnastics from a discipline on a par with ballet to some kind of vulgar circus show. Eleven months after Munich, the backwards somersault on a beam was banned, allegedly for safety reasons. Korbut threatened to retire from the sport."

      And it was a largely pro-German crowd too. Karin Janz and Erika Zuchold represented communist East Germany, but they were Germans just the same. Both did excellent, intricate routines, but Olga's uneven bars were next level and she was lowballed throughout on that event, including in the Team Compulsory and Team Optional rounds. Back then, scores carried over, so Olga started at a disadvantage with a lower preliminary score than Karin.

      I found her beam to be esquisette, a work of art, masterpiece. I'm glad it won her gold, as the grace & beauty stunned me to my core. I think that's the routine she should have been given a perfect 10 for, it was elegant, breathless perfection. She definitely was the first 10, as far as many of us are concerned.

      She was inventing new & exciting concepts and capturing the world's Heart while Nadia was in pampers. The Sparrow of Minsk 🌹🤍🌹 She was the First 10 x 4!!!! Her beam was a masterpiece, a work of beautiful art that captivates and it's my favorite of all her performances. I'm glad she was awarded Gold because her dedication she rightfully earned it under a corrupt & oppressive system. If you want a flawless machine, go find Nadia video's to watch!! Those of you will never understand it's about so much more than that and it's why Olga connected to the masses due to her imperfect drive to succeed & vulnerable passion, she demonstrated the psychology behind why we root for certain personalities and it isn't about who's technique is flawless because if it was, Olga would not have won the hearts of so many nor have the fans she continues to, to this day.

    • @lesterine77
      @lesterine77 6 месяцев назад +4

      In some ways it's harder, in others, not so much. It's much safer today. The floor was not springy and easy harder to get height on. The beam had absolutely no padding, the bars didn't have much tension and their hands weren't protected with grips. I'm sure there's a lot more, but those few things make you start from a much more difficult place. The gymnasts of today couldn't do this (esp the bars) and the gymnasts of today couldn't do this bc they have all dropped the artistic from artistic gymnastics.

    This is great footage. The tragic part is Tamara Lazakovich was a functioning alcoholic. They let her continue to complete knowing she was in serious trouble. I have to give it to her, she competed excellently. Sadly she died of alcoholism at the young age of 38.

      I wonder why they let her compete? She was even crying during the introduction before the Floor exercise, and at the medal ceremony of it too, she was exremely emotionally instabile, I thought, now I know why...

    Olga Kórbut vs Karin Janz, debió ser impresionante ese año para la gimnasia, aunque algunas más lo hubieron realmente bien... la arrogancia de Helmann por la calificación de Kórbut le salió muy caro, no tenía el nivel para igualar a la rutina y limpieza de la rutina de su contrincante, no suelo decirlo pero me dió gusto 😅.

    Olga Korbut not only changed how we saw Female Gymnastics, it also changed our perception of Russian women! Before 1972, we thought Soviet Women were ugly and weighed 300 pounds! This was the first real TV Olympics! I was alive in 1964 and 10 in 1968, but I didn't remember much about them. I was 14 going on 15 in 1972. Here we saw cute, spunky Soviet girls, especially Olga with her crooked pigtails. We also saw her cry, breaking the myth of Soviet women as emotionless robots!
