Olga Korbut and Nadia Komanichi are my two sports heroes. I remember vividly watching them on ABC’s Wide World Of Sports and being amazed by their skills. At 70,I watch these steps into the past and still am impressed.
I was watching the Olympics when Olga performed all her flawless acts that day! My friends had their dads put balance beams and vaults in their yards in Hawaii! We will never forget what we witnessed that day and how it changed gymnastics for us and the world! Thank you Olga!!
The USSR gymnastics team was like a relentless machine back then, their athletes rarely showed the slightest emotion, woman gymnasts were generally older and bigger. Along came this bouncy little girl with a big smile who not only showed grace, but amazing athleticism. She captured the hearts of the world.
She is amazing, but all girls in USSR team were very lovely. I hate when people choose their favorite and say bad things about everyone else. And you are one of them.

HER SECRET: She was enjoying herself, so she was creative! Today's gymnasts not only suffer but they are all about power, no art or gracefulness whatever. It was so enjoyable to watch Olga perform!!!
I find this story fascinating on many levels, but the one thing that truly stands out is how she is like a little phoenix. Her initial failure on the uneven bars lead to her breaking down, weeping, and in some way releasing an untold burden. When she rose free from these ashes, she was more than just a sparrow, her rebel's smile flashing, she was anew, beautiful, near perfect, and enthralling. What a darling.
For the time, yes. However, gymnastics have advanced so much in terms of equipment, training, and that. I am not sure a routine as relatively simple as the one she performed would pull such a high score anymore.

Olga not only inspired a generation…she taught a generation. Yes about gymnastics, but so much more than that. She taught us that people are people everywhere. The people of the Soviet Union were often viewed with fear and distrust in that era. Olga taught us all through her brilliant smile and occasional tears that people are people everywhere. We live, hope and love regardless of where we are from. Thank you Olga❤❤
Play Olga and Nadia's uneven bar routines back to back. It isn't even close. The degree of difficulty in Olga's presentation is so much higher. After her ground-breaking back flip she goes to the lower bar and fips back ward and blind to a dead-stop iron horse. Incredible strength and control. Nadia's routine in '76 was flawless, but the degree of difficulty was much lower. Try it sometime. You'll agree. Cheers.
The instrumental tune that became known as “Nadia’s Theme” was actually used to compare Korbut’s and Comaneci’s uneven bars performances, with each played in slow-motion for the duration of the tune. So, it could have just as easily been titled, “Olga’s Theme”…but Olga scored a 9.9 to Nadia’s 10.
Because it wasn't perfect. In today's scoring system the routine would have started out with a higher difficulty score to go with execution but in those days most gymnasts would be docked too many points for hard moves done imperfectly so they would opt for easier skills to perfect.
Olga manipulated the judges well by acting like she botched her first routine (in a group competition), releasing the waterworks on the bench, and then showing off her impeccable skills in the solo competition. I can only imagine how much manipulation her husband (later) went through.

Personally, I think Olga was a little better than Nadia. I think Olga should've gotten the first 10 score especially on that scary uneven bar and the balance beam routine.

In Munich, the crowd was so distraught with the judges undermarking Korbut in the uneven bars final that the gymnast that followed her, Angelika Hellmann of the GDR, had to perform her exercise with the booing still going on.
I was there in Munich. A 9.8 on the bars was disgrace. The crowd was outraged. There was no such thing as a 10.0 at the time, but she was so far beyond everybody else she deserved a 12. It changed gymnastics from being mechanical to a delight. Nadia perfected the mechanical. She could never match the delight.
Lady LC Nadia had all: great extensions, Symmetrie and gracious moves! And she made all seem easy, but it wasn‘t. She was a natural talent and beauty, a star! Corbut was very good too! But not all ingredients.
Olga Korbut, Nadia Comaneci, Nellie Kim, Svetlana Khorkina and many many more were my idols growing up I lived and breathed gymnastics but my life in the sport was cut short due to a drunk driver smashing into our car on the way to compete in Wembley, side winded us on the passenger side broke both me legs one very badly and shattered my ankle on my left and dislocated my knee on the right, it was a long and very painful recovery never did gymnastics again, but I still watch it when London hosted the OLympics I got to see the gymnastics. SIMONE BILES no one absolutely no one can match that girl she is phenomenal
I can’t decide which gymnasts I like the best. I love the grace in the older gymnasts such as Nadia Comaneci, but I also love the power and strength of the newer gymnasts like Simone Biles.
Matt B As far as floor ex, it’s possible that the Olga generation of gymnasts would have done more powerful tumbling but they had to perform on just a mat on the floor. Today’s gymnasts have the benefit of a floor that has a couple thousand springs under it. That’s what enables them to get the bounce and lift needed to go perform multiple flips and twists. Take away the sprung floor and their routines would look much different. I get what you’re saying, though. I think today’s gymnastics needs a much more balanced approach. Most of the so-called “dance” elements consist of nothing more than waving the arms around (especially on beam), poorly-executed multiple turns with an emphasis on how many can be crammed in but no care taken on quality of execution, and so on. Most of the “dance” elements are jerky and it’s obvious they’ve on,y been put in as filler because they’re required. If the Code of Points was revised to reward female gymnasts for grace, elegance, and actual true dance moves while keeping in the powerful tumbling tricks, I believe it would be a huge benefit to the sport.
Biles is an acrobat. The sport is now destroyed. It's called ARTISTIC gymnastics yet now there are hardly any gymnasts with elegance grace & real artistry.
Ria Bright do MALE artistic gymnasts have to dance? No, they don't. Sure, this was nice to look at, but I always thought it was quite silly that the male gymnasts got to do these really cool and powerful tumbling and apparatus stuff while the women have to dance. If you like the more "artistic" stuff, you can still watch rhythmic gymnastics.
Olga Korbut is the best gymnast ever. She is so strong and graceful, so daring and beautiful. She did the first perfect 10.0 and was not given but just a 9.8. In 1972 she outdo the compretition, she up the ante and create a new dimension in the category. Then in Montreal 1976, she was SUPERB again at the uneven bars. I was just a child when I see her in 1972 and always thought she was an angel. She is a LEGEND. She is the Best of the Best 🌹❤️
Yes. Olga performed exercises Nadia couldn't realize. Věra Čáslavská was a forerunner. Nadia Comaneci was a princess. Svetlana Boginskaia was a queen. Olga Korbut was an angel.
Very true. Don't get me wrong I like Nadia, the way she did handstands on the bar was great but despite people saying her bars was original it wasn't really. The radochla and full turn after the salto had been done before Caslavska used both radochla and full turns. The Comaneci is just another version of the Janz. Nadia was not the first person to do a front salto from high bar to high bar despite her claim that she was. Janz did, Jaeger did with differences in take off admittedly and most recently Elena Davydova admitted she was the first to do the Comaneci salto from a different direction at a soviet competition in 1975
Olga is the legend 👑 , Elena Mukhina did Korbut flip with a twist on uneven bars, I loved that, inspired with Olga's she made her own Mukhina flip. RiP Elena Mukhina 💐🖤

The original back flip on the uneven bars took place during the Team Competition, NOT in the individual apparatus finals. Other than that😁, this video is accurate, especially in regards to Olga's impact on the sport.
I think the reason her crying made her a household name because at the time people thought of Soviets as being mechanical and emotionless. Olga crying showed the world that Soviet gymnasts could be upset and cry over a blown performance

Others can surpass her regarding technique but none can be as inspiring as her. She's the embodiment of gymnastics
Gymnastic was so beautiful to watch back then! It was art!
She had the best Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise! She was the best! And her smile today is still the same!
Two years after the 1972 Olympics she was world champion on vault and she didn't like the apparatus.
Solo Olga.
WOW! Olga Korbut - 10/10!
Olga was the best.
I could watch her performances over and over. So sweet and perfect, graceful and balletic but strong and very individual. I know that Nadia will be the number one forever in this sport, but Olga made it look so easy and graceful.
And she expressed a JOY that poor little Nadia lacked (probably brow-beaten into perfection).
Olga Korbut shined a spotlight on gymnastics! She will always be my favorite...unique talent and very captivating!
Too dangerous, but yet she did it perfectly. Her score should have been a perfect ten .
Olga Korbut’s Uneven Bar Routine deserves a 10!!! She should have been the first one to receive it.
Best of best
Olga korbut
Personally, I think Olga was a little better than Nadia. I think Olga should've gotten the first 10 score especially on that scary uneven bar and the balance beam routine.
HKH HKH -> You’re 100% RIGHT‼️
The problem is that when since Nadia appeared in 75 and defeated her and Tourisheva in the European championships in Norway ... Neither Olga or Ludmilla could defeat Nadia again ... After Norway, then Montreal ... they Both began to make mistakes every time they faced Nadia .. The unconscious betrayed them ... That "pefect ten" was an injuried en the mind of then both
The truth is that Olga Korbut was stronger and more spectacular than Comaneci ...
But Nadia executed better...
I insist, Olga Korbut is great, she was stronger and more espectacular than no one else en her time, respect ... only respect for her
It is my personal opinion... perhaps i'm wrong
@@chacho761 That's true. In '76, she must have gone through some issues that caused her to be overshadowed. But I also think she was definitely the greatest.
.10
Lol and what is your competence to say that?
She sort of somehow stops yet keeps going mid air. Truly spectacular!!
Its GOLD STANDARDin everyone's mind still to this day.!!some 40 yrs later how marvelous she was and is.!!
@@jimsoper2321 Spot on. Olga personified delight and Nadia never had that 👍
At that time the gold medals were divided. URS had already won others, so this gold had to be given to another country, so Olga got robbed.
Jim Soper2 do you remember which judge or judges score her low?
What an amazing opportunity for you to have witness such a performance!
That must have been so hard for you. I hope you have found joy in other ways in your life. Courage!
If the Code of Points was revised to reward female gymnasts for grace, elegance, and actual true dance moves while keeping in the powerful tumbling tricks, I believe it would be a huge benefit to the sport.
arwenevenstar0761 It would be interesting to see what would happen if there was a rule change

Whoosh!
This is a 10 whether the judges gave it to her or not.
Olga is easily my favorite female gymnast of all time....easily.
I agree. I much prefer her to Nadia
Eimeara Stapleton yep, me too. Nadia was all about perfect mechanics. Olga was innovation, charm, and happiness all rolled into one.
Janz did, Jaeger did with differences in take off admittedly and most recently Elena Davydova admitted she was the first to do the Comaneci salto from a different direction at a soviet competition in 1975
Nadia has been declared the best in the world!
Olga is the legend 👑 , Elena Mukhina did Korbut flip with a twist on uneven bars, I loved that, inspired with Olga's she made her own Mukhina flip.
RiP Elena Mukhina 💐🖤
She was a true amazing different gymnastic; she shared a new technical way and very high level ; a true 10 ! More than Nadia .....
You can still see the korbut flip on the beam- she was the first to do back somersault on the beam too and that one not banned 😊
She was AMAZING !
I was astonishingly amazed by her routine. In clip 3:38, it seems that Olga had an elastic body.
uneven Bars routine from Korbut & Comaneci will always be my favourite routine top watch !!
Olga Corbut has moves I've never seen in any other gymnast!
At the time, I swear it was Olga who did it but she was on the beam and positioned in such a way the camera person was looking right at her face as she was bent over and she smiled..am I the only one who remembers this???
I remember....why havent they shown that? That was crazy cool.Just amazing.
The original back flip on the uneven bars took place during the Team Competition, NOT in the individual apparatus finals. Other than that😁, this video is accurate, especially in regards to Olga's impact on the sport.
she's unique, barely any gymnast have.
I think the reason her crying made her a household name because at the time people thought of Soviets as being mechanical and emotionless. Olga crying showed the world that Soviet gymnasts could be upset and cry over a blown performance
Russians and other soviet people are very emotion people
it's stupid that you wrote here.
@@OO-5555 and rude of you
Exactly, that was it.
There was no New Life in those days so Korbut's vault and floor scores were added to the scores she had gotten in the team event. She was not third in the all around going into bars, she was leading.
The main thing I learned from Olga, You don't QUIT! SIMONE should learn that!

Olga Korbut the best history legend
Korbut forever!!
It was that flip. Everyone was like ... WHAT!?
Daiane dos Santos' floor routine in Beijing was amazing. A Brazilian gymnast that surprised the world. She even has two difficult movements with her name. We Brazilians are proud of her.
Olga merecia uma nora 10.0. Os juízes foram severos demais!
Exatamente!
As far as I'm concerned Korbut received the first 10.0 as her uneven bars performance was more
spectacular than a 9.8! If it's so dangerous, which is a matter of opinion, then give her spotters! Like
the men have!!!
Gravity made a formal protest, saying that she had discriminated against it, treated it with contempt, cancelled it.
