I'll never forget that Katarina Witt was reported screaming at the television after the Sochi scandal of Yuna Kim's silver medal score. She really loves this sport and everyone in it. What a wonderful woman.
@Nacho Nacho In that case, she wasn't alone. Practically everybody who wasn't Russian wasn't happy with the win. And it's got nothing to do with Adelina's country, but her lack of artistry and clumsy jumps.

I mean, I'm russian and almost all my friends and ALL who I know say that Yuna Kim had to be an olympic champion, if you go to a russian sport sites you will see these messages like "lol, she didnt deserve a gold medal"

Lmao most people were screaming in anger about Yuna Kim’s silver medal. Almost everyone knew she deserved the gold.
She was beautiful back in the 80's at the Olympics and she's still beautiful and a beautiful skater.

Her free skate to Carmen at 1988 Calgary will always have a special place in heart❤️ It was the first figure skating routine I had ever seen, and back then I had no idea what figure skating consisted, what were the jumps, or anything like that, but her performance just mesmerized me😍😍😍
She truly is a legend. Not only for her competitive achievements... but just her honest hard working and kind character. She’s loved by the Germans and you see her so often on tv for no other reason than that people just like to be around her. I remember how upset she was when Kim Yuna only placed second at Sochi. The tv host had to calm her down, otherwise she would’ve almost cussed on live television XD She’s the greatest!!!

Bernadette Kacer that’s not true. She was actually the one that was observed. By the way, she was 19 years old when East Germany fell apart. A teenager and figure skater, not really a secret agent 🤦🏻♀️

@@lb4585 She would report other skaters and athletes activities while they were abroad: who they talked to, if they went out, etc. In short in order to keep her place, she had to make sure those around her were true to the party!

She is still so beautiful. I love her. She was magnificent to watch. She captivated the world. Still a stunner. I still get chills watching her. It makes me sad to think that everything about her life hinged on one competition. I give her an eternal gold for class and hard work

She was my biggest crush back in the 80s, and she ages very well, just like fine wine!
Crumbs, as if she wasn't already my all-time favourite female figure skater of all time; as if she didn't perform with grace, elegance, incredible musicality, theatricality and that wonderful smile.. she then goes on to be this amazing benefactor. I didn't think my admiration for her could grow any further. It has. As a fan of skating from the UK (where we haven't done too shabbily with champions!), she was everything on the ice.
Today's skaters may have different, more evolved skills, but Katarina's performances not only had skill, but were utterly beautiful and enchanting. And we have them on 'film' to look back on any time. That's something to be treasured.
She was the first skater that I ever watched, what an amazing presence on the ice, beautifully artistic.
Have to say she looks today like a woman who followed her destiny during every minute of her life.

I saw her skate live, many times, at the World Championships…Hartford, in 1981, Copenhagen, in 1982, Helsinki, in 1983, Geneva, in 1986, Cincinnati, in 1987 and a couple of other World’s, that I can’t remember where they were. She was amazing. Even at practice sessions, she could skate to other skaters programs and make them look like they were made for her. She was lovely and gracious (at least, publicly), when she lost…I’m thinking it was when she lost World’s to Debi Thomas. I believe, it was in 86’. She said Debi was the better skater that day and deserved to win. Anyway, all of us who used to attend World’s every year loved her. Of course, we always rooted for the ladies from our own country to beat her. I’m on a roll, now, lol…anyone else remember the year Elaine Zayak beat her…1982, Copenhagen. It was the year that she jumped from 7th to first. No one thought it would be possible, but I think Katerina ended up 4th that year. Anyway, enough taxing my senior brain. In closing, she was a delight to watch.
Such a legendary performer! She will always stand the test of time.

There's no doubt in my mind that if she were to come up in any era of skating, she would be a champion. I think sometimes her beauty overshadows her skills and talent. She's probably one of greatest skaters ever

When I think about skating, I directly have Katarina Witt in mind! I don't know why!!!!
She was always somewhat of a vixen. Despite her obvious beauty and her charm she definitely intimidated the other girls, not sure if she did it intentionally but that’s how sport is at the highest level, it’s always mental. Katarina’s very tough, she had an inate ability to always perform under pressure; whenever the others got tight or tense Katarina never did.

My cousin was a member of the US National Figure Skating Team as a pairs ice dancer in the '50s.
She received an ice skating scholarship to the Colorado College in Colorado Springs where she trained at the Broadmoor Resort Skating Rink.
She was a bronze medalist at the US Nationals in ice dancing with Tim Brown in 1958.
She skated in the first televised Pro-Skating Competition by the ABC Wide-World Sports tv show series in 1959.
She was a petite blond "bombshell" of personality, my sister and I were dazzled by her.
She eventually went on to be the skating pro at the Shaker Heights Cleveland, Ohio Skate & Racket Country Club.

Quel plaisir de retrouver Katarina Witt par le biais de ce reportage. Fervente admiratrice depuis toujours, je ne me lasserai jamais de la voir évoluer sur la glace. J'aimerais tellement trouvé un DVD avec tous ses programmes depuis ses débuts. Je regarde "Carmen" régulièrement et ai toujours et encore la chair de poule. Merci Katarina.
Ich habe mich sehr gefreut, diese Reportage über Katarina zu sehen. Seit Jahren bewundere ich sie und schaue ihre Programme nach wie vor sehr gern an. Quelle classe, quelle élégance !! Une patineuse super douée, très belle et en plus super sympathique. Beaucoup de patineuses si prétentieuses devraient l’imiter car en plus , tellement moins de talent. Katarina est pour moi, le modèle à suivre et une des meilleures patineuses de tous les temps, La patineuse dont on se souvient alors que tant d’autres sont tombées dans l’oubli. Je lui souhaite vraiment beaucoup de bonheur dans sa vie personnelle et je la remercie pour tous ces merveilleux moments de patinage et son sourire 🧜🏼♀️ ⛸

After the Berlin wall came down Katarina moved to the U.S. I recall watching a program about her afterwards with her speaking in English. I don't know where she is today but I recall watching her during the Olympics where she performed "Carmen." The general "scuttlebut" then was that Debbie Thomas was more athletic and had a more difficult routine than Katarina but she didn't stay on her feet. Katarina's routine, comparatively, was easier, especially the 20 seconds of posing but she performed it better.
I've been a huge fan of hers since I was a teen watching her in the 1994 Olympics. Even my brothers liked her, since she was playing Robin Hood, lol. It was a long time, though, until I knew what she had to go through in East Germany, as she describes here. And oddly enough, this is the first time I've heard her speak German, and not English.
